Great info Todd. I've always told people that are looking g to get an AR platform to consider getting it chambered in 5.56 because then you can shoot both .223 and 5.56 safely. Just in case the sheet ever hits the fan and you come across a stockpile of 5.56 you'll be good to go.

So what’s the difference between an AR-15 chambered in 556 and an AR-15 chambered in 223? Feel free to get technical as you need to be, I would like to see data
@harrypeterson9287
2 жыл бұрын
Where the difference lies is mostly in the chamber of the rifle itself, the 5.56 has a longer section of free bore. The 5.56 has a small length of barrel in front of the chamber that has no rifling and is the same diameter as the bullet itself. Keep in mind that bullets are always larger in diameter than the barrel in order to engage the rifling and make a tight seal so they need to squish down. The free bore allows the bullet to jump ahead without meeting any resistance thus reducing the peak pressures and allowing for a bit more powder charge while maintaining an acceptable level of pressure . The bullet jumping ahead like this allows a bit more room for the expanding gasses, it also makes the build up of pressure less rapid and creates less friction because the bullet builds up more velocity before entering the rifling and squishing down. All of this adds up to mean lower chamber pressures with a given load. The .223 chamber forces the bullet to squish down and engage the rifling much sooner as it leaves the casing after firing. If you were to fire .223 from a 5.56 barrel you'd find that the .223 would be slower than if it were fired from a .223 chambered rifle if all else was equal. The same is true for 5.56 from a .223 chambered rifle, you'll get higher velocity. I hope that makes sense and answers your question.
@dcrose001

Google shows the average powder charge for. 223 at 25 grains. The 5.56 is between 40-80 grains! Basically double, no wonder the pressure difference!

This is not even close to true. 223 has thinner brass, therefore larger powder capacity, and even a 223 case couldnt even come CLOSE to holding 40 grains of powder, let alone 80 grains. Do some better research. Depending on the specific powder, 25-27ish grains pretty much fills up a 223 or 556 case.

.223 is100 percent fine thru all 5.56 rounds and they do not suggest 5.56 thru. 223 because there is a little more pressure.. but I've NEVER seen or heard of a .223 breaking from a 5.56 IT IS NOT SUGGESTED but you'll be hard pressed to find a verified modern chamber or barrel damaged from 5.56 when produced for a 5.56

.223 brass will not suffer being belt loaded or hi-capacity Mag auto Load and run thru a hot (expanded) barrel chamber. A 223 has a thin base wall brass. the ruined brass can't be reloaded. and No don't wreck a .223 bolt action chamber with 5.56. Headspace is usually tighter on a bolt action. 5.56 is built for running in a hot barrel that expanded. Not a cold tight tolerance bolt action 223. Same applies to 308/7.62.

Is the Pope Catholic? Any AR-15 made after 1975 will shoot both inch and metric variants. AR-15s made before that should only use inch ammo. I’ve not heard of ANY 223 bolt gun blowing up because someone used 5.56.

I will go along with that. I have only had a couple of 223 guns in my life. Thompson Contender and an old Mini-14! I will say this but, mind you I am not recommending it. I might have shot 100's if not 1000's of 5.56 rounds through those guns. I no longer have either gun! Why you might ask? Well because they blew up.....no not really never had a problem. If the round will fit in the chamber.....my take is....you will have no issues. Still I am not recommending it. Do as I say not as I do😂👍🇺🇸

@@ToddTheGunGuy Yes, I agree! Anymore when I build AR's I only build 223 Wylde. If someone wants a 5.56. As for as modern bolt guns....single shots, etc. Nobody is building guns in 223! It handicaps your ammo choices to much. That being said if someone thinks a Ruger MK77 in 223 can't handle 5.56 but, an AR can I have some beach front property to sell them😂in Colorado😂👍🇺🇸

In a word NO. the 5.56 cartridge is loaded to produce a lower pressure so that it can be used in the wide range of weapons in use across the NATO countries. The .223 is higher pressure and could cause the 5.56 weapon to fail with potential lethal outcome. The .223 can use 5.56 mil spec ammo if you want to save money.

Simple rule of thumb for AR-15 barrels: If it's marked 5.56x45/5.56 NATO, you can safely feed it either 5.56 or .223 in any mix you like, but you MIGHT get less accuracy out of it with .223 than if you used a .223 barrel. If it's marked .223 Wylde, you can treat it exactly the same as the one marked 5.56. It MIGHT be just enough more accurate that you can notice the difference. If it's marked .223, it's *DESIGNED* for .223 pressures, and you shouldn't put 5.56 through it due to the potential for kaboom from the tighter chamber not liking 5.56's higher pressure. Cure all potential problems: Buy only 5.56 or .223 Wylde marked barrels - they'll eat either 5.56 or .223 with zero worries about kabooms, and good-to-excellent accuracy. Bonus: The Wylde barrel MIGHT give you enough of an improvement in accuracy to be considered worth laying out the few extra bucks they usually cost compared to the same barrel chambered in 5.56 or "plain" .223.

@@ToddTheGunGuy yeah I hadn’t known much about 223 wylde but from what I’ve read it seems to put out somewhat better accuracy (although marginal for your typical offhand shooter) than 5.56 while still running both 223 and 556 safely
