This clears up so much. In my Asian Art History class the professor, who is Chinese, helped soooo much with pronunciation and she made sure we knew about T vs D in regard to Daoism (she also had us read the Tao of Pooh ❤️). The following year I took a Tai Chi class by an American professor...who taught the class that 'Chi' as it is in 'Tai Chi' meant breath 😬 Both professors taught similar things, but there were inconsistencies that this video has helped clear up (and obviously everything the Art History professor said in terms of language and pronunciation was most accurate 😂), so thank you!

Dear Shifu Gu and Didi George, this is well done and appreciated. A kind tip to you, darling George, your eagerness and enthusiasm are quite genuine, we all feel that. One huge lesson is for you to simply breathe, breathe and release the fund of doubt, nervousness and scattered energy that some may view as an animating excitement. Indeed, that may be the actual truth of the matter. Just remember to breathe like Shifu Gu, deep, cleansing empowering breathes. Observe brother, how in the moment Shifu is, composed, focused, Completely at ease and ready. Copy his calm, clarity and humor.. breathe and relax. You're doing an admirable job in producing these engaging and information rich videos. Be well, be safe my coaches and I share this with appreciation and affection. Every time I get a translated book from Chinese to English like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Sima Qian's Shiji, Zhuangzi and the Huainanzi, I always read the samples to see if it is Wade Giles or Pinyin since I am so used to reading things in Pinyin. They both experienced syncretization, along with Confucianism, in China under the more popular over arching religion known as Shenism. Also known as Chinese Folk Religion. Unlike in Western European religions where the regions were considered at best regional (Romans thought the gods of different religions were all real but gods of different geographies who didn’t interact), and at worst mutually exclusive (the idea of one true religion); religions and philosophies in China and surrounding countries tended to blend together. Almost like the people had more of a “go along to get along” mentality where religion was concerned (not that everything was sunshine and rainbows). You want to worship Yu Shang Shi, the Jade Emperor of Heaven? Sure, but we’ve also got this philosophy you can track onto that! Know what I mean?

Cantonese vs Mandarin. In Cantonese tao is pronounced closer to Dough. Similar to the do in judo. This is one of the reasons why there are many differences in the translations.
@ruedelta
4 жыл бұрын
Yup, though for those who don't know, Mandarin should be used in virtually every case since it is both the court language of China as well as the modern Chinese official dialect. Using Cantonese is sort of like speaking with a Georgian accent instead of standard newscaster American English.

Chinese TV comes with subtitles. This is because people's pronunciations vary widely. Even teachers trying hard to be "standard" will pronounce their sibilants differently across different sides of Beijing. Putonghua or Common Speech, like Pilipino and Bahasa Indonesi, is the official language of its country. All three languages are being conjured into existence in the interest of national unity. Each is based on the careful speech of middle to upper class, educated, speakers living in the capital cities of the respective country. None of the three languages exists yet, though everybody pretends otherwise. Young people alive now are bringing the three languages into existence, and their grandchildren will refuse to believe that there can be such an act as creating a language.

I’ve spoken to a Chinese man, practicing Taoism, and it ess s bit strange because a lot of the things he did was not staying in line with the tao te Ching I’ve read. I asked him curiously what the purpose of his rituals and ceremonies were cuz I simply never ever heard of them. We talked for a while and he said WESTERN versions of tao te Ching / book of virtue is BS. Crazy translations mes up the whole point. Of course in China temples they perform rituals as a way to praise someone and to increase their life length. I said; I thought in the “China temples” they connected with them selves. But he said “throw that book away” are their different Taoism and what book is accurate?
