I guess I am in the minority here. I actually liked this movie. I feel like it provides a lot of answers to questions (that no one asked admittedly) the previous film didn't touch on like; who is the demon and why did it possess Regan specifically. There is a reason it does what it does and the movie explains this well. It also dives a bit deeper on Father Marris involvement with the exorcism and confirms how he perished. The movie also confirms that Regan remembers everything from when she was possessed and has a connection to the demon even after the exorcism -which Lamont wishes to sever in order to help Regan (this is the plot of the movie). I think the movie is a lot deeper than people give it credit for. There are no heads doing a full 360 in this film -but it goes into great detail regarding the lore of it all and I can appreciate that.

Eloquently stated! The merits of the storyline itself can be debated. The quality of the execution, however… As far as the film delving deeper into the origins of the demon and the explanation of Regan’s possession, I think it actually detracts from the overall story. For me, part of what made the original so frightening was how such a brutal attack on a normal, innocent little girl seemed so random. In my suspension of disbelief it wasn’t hard to reason that if it could happen to her, it could happen to anyone. By placing a target on Regan’s back by way of the superpower of E.S.P., it took away that “every girl” quality. Also, and it’s been said before, Hollywood loves over-explaining things that are often much better (and scarier) in our imaginations. Also, the acting sucked :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!

Is it watchable? Yes it is. Why? Because from that days was something new for everyone and Linda herself, the project is great. Listen: That Machine connected Regan and father Lamont and they have the vision that nobody, but absolutely nobody can explain. Where father Lamont goes, Regan knows because they are connected and Regan see what Lamont see and conversely. Father Lamont was father Merrin's student, like "Exorcist Junior" or something so he knew some things. That's why Lamont is praying to Merrin at the start, because Merrin was he's teacher, but he didn't teached him everything about exorcism so he failed the exorcism at the start of the movie. The first phase of the connection of Regan and Lamont was when father Lamont watched the drawing and realised that Regan warned them. At the ending he was hypnotized by Pazuzu so that's why he started to fight real Regan. Lamont was new Merrin and the objective was to protect Regan. That's Exorcist 2 - The Heretic.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I can appreciate that you liked this movie (you’re far from alone). We all have different tastes. But all you did in your post was explain the plot points. It’s as if you think the reason people don’t like this movie is that they don’t understand it. It’s kind of a condescending assumption. The movie just isn’t deep enough to fly over the heads of anyone over the age of 12. Listing reasons why you like/dislike a film is fair game and I never rip anyone for disagreeing with me. On the other hand, listing reasons why OTHERS do or don’t is, well, presumptuous. I grew up (if you can call it that) in Westport, Ct.; same as Linda Blair. In fact, my older brother dated her sister, Debbie, and my older sister dated her brother, Jimmy. Around the time this movie was released (1977), I, along with my father, brother, and sisters had moved into a house (in Rockland County, NY) previously occupied by Ellen Burstyn. I was in Virginia when I saw the first 'The Exorcist'. When I was a kid in Westport, I had a psychiatrist who had a son named Roland. Linda Blair was living in this town at the time. The story behind 'The Exorcist' is actually based on someone named Roland. This psychiatrist eventually would go to the Vatican for an audience with Pope John Paul II. So, around the time, 'The Exorcist II' was in the theatres, I was in Ellen Burstyn's former abode with most of my family. I used to spend a lot of time in Ellen Burstyn's former house, up in my room listening to music over headphones. One of my favorites at the time was 'Sense Of Doubt' from David Bowie's "Heroes" album.

Linda had been interviewed and said that the original script was good. During the filming, the director kept rewriting it into the piece of crap that ended up on the screen. Apparently, a bullet was dodged when making the original. They had offered the directorial position to this same director but he was apparently unhappy with that script. It was rumored he wanted to do rewrites to remove what he felt was unnecessarily disgusting.

Yeah, and often it can be hard to know where to place responsibility for poor performances. In cases like this, however, when the cast is filled with A-listers, it's likely with the director. He was the one moving on to the next shot when he was satisfied. The actors were presumably just giving him what he was looking for. A more recent example would be the Stars Wars prequels (Phantom, Clones, and Sith). That all-star cast received a lot of flak for their wooden deliveries, but they were just acting according to Lucas' vision. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope to hear from you again!

Thanks for watching! No argument from me. I wasn’t suggesting the people of that region or their religion were made up for the movie. And my use of the word primitive was in the most basic definition of the word: “...having cultural or physical similarities with their early ancestors.” Many prominent religions in industrialized nations include ceremonial practices and symbolism that are highly traditional and hearken back to ancient times. Catholicism (the religion I subscribe to) does it in spades. But still, if Hollywood can show people of color chanting and banging drums, they are on it like a hobo on a waffle.
