@@sankethbhaskar4236 Exactly my thought. If it something I want at what I consider to be a fair price I will buy it; however, if it isn't something I want at the price I won't. @Yous0147
4 жыл бұрын
@cak01vej I see that viewpoint, but personally, I wouldn't have given it an A- even without the overall implications of it all. The set is purely aesthetic sure, but there's still value to aesthetic, and 30 bucks for only 5 lands is still a steep price, despite the artwork on those cards. Not only is the product expensive for what it brings of value, but it is also likewise inflexible in that you can only buy all 5 colored lands together and for a full playset you could "need" up to 10 to 20. So yes I agree with the prof's point on aesthetic absolutely being fine to monetize when reprints are present to a large degree, but beyond that, there's still grading the product for what it is and what it brings to the table for someone interested in the product.

It's actually a slow money grab. A lot of effort goes into cards that get produced in small numbers and that's also where the price comes from. The artist wage cost has to be paid by selling a lot fewer cards and the production of only a few sheets is also a lot more costly for each card produced. So why do it that way? It makes their product line wider which they do to stop their continuous revenue drops. They could mass produce these and sell for normal prices. But then it would eat away from the other regular products they are already selling. Their big revenue comes from the regular products but they want more more more more. So if short term thinking about revenue is the only goal, it makes sense to add those "high-end" products for buyers who will also already be buying the mass produced products.

I have a friend who is a magic the gathering fan. He’s been trying to get me to play this game for a few years now, but I’ve staunchly refused never having been much interested in these kind of card games. But he does know I love godzilla, and things that are pretty. The card with Mothra and the one with the ocean sunset are just exactly what tickles my fancy. Though I still am unsure if I want to fully invest into this whole shebang (a lot of which comes from seeing the other less appealing card art) this is tipping the scales a bit in their favor. Nice video! You’ve explained the product objectively well and also spoken up on the problem to someone foreign to the magic the gathering community.

Props to you professor. While you made your feelings on Godzilla in general, and Godzilla in MtG in particular quite clear, your opinion seemed detached from it to a point where if it was secret lair: pokémon lands, or secret lair: Star trek TNG Vehicle alters, it would have been the same ratings, while still going at the heart of the problem. I won't be bold enough to praise objectivity or anything, but appreciate the distanced and nuanced review very much.

@ShawnMcNaughton

You hit on all the major points, but a few things I would add: - For Card Alters, the more troubling aspect is that these are tournament-legal alternate art, but a custom alter is impossible to guarantee as tournament legal (due to judge interpretation, weight, scope of alter, etc.) - One of my qualms with this specific product is that it's 5 lands for $30. Make it reasonable sized playsets for $50 or so, and we're talking. As is, it's either 'ooh, look, this is the 1-in-5 games where I pulled my Godzilla Forest' or 'OK, to have a reasonable full playset for all lands Godzilla, I'm spending.... around $800.' Neither feels good. - Reprints need a dedicated product. In fact, in MTG Arena, I think they may have stumbled on the right formula: The 'Historic' card bundles. If I could pay, say, $100 for a full playset (4x) of all 25 of those cards - an average cost of $1/card - I'm on board. Adjust it to approximately the size of a sheet or half-sheet if that makes it easier. Mystery Boosters cut too wide of a swath; they only get more copies onto the secondary market as a practical measure. Spellbooks and Secret Lairs are more focused on being a premium product. They shouldn't need premium packaging - a simpler version of the Commander boxes or a slightly larger version of the Challenger boxes would do. They should also be an evergreen product, or at least a large print run. - Let's be honest on the secondary market issue - if they admit to paying attention to the secondary market, we start getting into the situation that caused the Reserve List. At the same time, not admitting that doesn't help them with that argument when there is pricing like the Secret Lair Ultimate Edition, which as you noted clearly is not cost of production + any reasonable profit margin, nor is there anything truly special about the card quality or art. I've enjoyed getting back into MTG over the last couple years - but some of these new products just rub me the wrong way. MTG was never a cheap game to play, but this is... different.

I feel like this is one of the most important videos you've done on secret lairs, the points are very clear and concise, and hopefully your fair approach will allow people who are not as critical of market strategies to realize what wotc is doing with their product releases and be more tentative with their decisions. The only recourse we have is to vote with our wallet, but I feel like despite all of the backlash, certain parts of the market will buy everything that wizards releases. The whole of the secondary market is heavily distorted by "investors" with deeper wallets than the average player trying to artificially manipulate scarcity to inflate their investments, and the only thing more reprehensible than that is wotc pandering to them instead of allowing players to access cards in an affordable way.

@kereminde
4 жыл бұрын
I was going to make a post about how it's playable and accessible the way it is, but I realized instead: Many players don't actually want the game to change that way. In my experience, the people who go out to local stores to play in FNM or Prereleases are far more interested in "looking cool". And people who stick to the kitchen tables or "game nights" generally just want to have fun drinking sodas and throwing out junky decks because it's fun to play some multiplayer and beat up on the first person to start whining the words "mana screw".
@Yous0147

It's incredible really. Just incredible how the game is still alive and thriving despite how the wizards have continuously decided to monetize their game this way. I think, beyond anything, it's a testament to the passion from the players of the game as well as the designers that it is still running, because frankly for something so absurd to be able to happen again and again and still getting sold out, the passion has to be huge and immovable, lol.

@@starnik I have been trying to figure out a way to uncurl foils, and the method I've found with the most success is to (I would try it out before using it on valuable cards) is to put it in a very dry environment and leave it for a while. Here's a link to a decent article: www.manaleak.com/mtguk/2017/10/foil-mtg-cards-how-to-cure-curling-bending-and-tournament-tips/ One time I had a bunch of foils that were really curled and I brought them on a plane (not on purpose) in an open deckbox, and when I got off they were less curled.

If I can say this: I've been playing Magic since Onslaught, and have gone through thousands of dollars worth of cards in my life, building every format at one point or another. However, if you would believe it, I'm an even greater Godzilla fan. I have a collectible figurine collection that is worth more than my Magic collection. So, when Wizards announced that they'd be printing Godzilla cards, I was absolutely blown away. However, making Godzilla cards locked behind a price point like Box Toppers and a $30 set of basic lands.... Right now, I just honestly feel exploited and I dont even want to play Magic anymore :/

I can agree. I bought Secret Lair Goblins, I play Goblins in Legacy and it was a nice way to bling out the deck! Especially because it was my favorite art for cards like Goblin Lackey. But if someone as big as YOU says something and calls them out on youtube, they will be nearly forced to acknowledge this and make some form of action. If anyone has seen the Netflix series Cernobyl; Thank you for being our Legasov and speaking for the rest of us, knowing they will listen to *you* at least! ...I know you're going to be in very hot water with WotC after this, I just hope they won't completely cut you off from all your previews/interviews >.
