I disagree that you should be getting 4 ofs of any card in a starter deck. I can understand why if you're gonna play in tournaments or push yourself to play very sweaty and gross magic in the future that you want to have as many of the same copy of a card as possible, but it is SO disheartening to open a "Starter deck" and just see the same cards over and over again. Like, I get it, you want people to play in-store and get really good at it, but a person picking up one of these starter kits because they want to start a collection and see how magic plays? Way more interesting to get as much variable cards as possible. That's why the Commander Deck Pre-cons are great, especially for someone who doesn't play normally.

I have to say that I think this product should be viewed as a "teacher product". Let's be serious for a minute. How many people walk into an LGS with a friend and say "ooh ,let's learn to play magic", versus someone who already plays and buys this to teach someone else how to play. The value of the cards is enough to tell the new guy "Hey, don't just put a rubber band around your deck and throw in your backpack", like me and my buddies did in '95 . It's an opportunity to teach value and collectabilty as well as game play.

One of the reasons I enjoy playing decks like this is usually because of the lack of playsets. While playsets are the "professional" way to play Magic, and are certainly required in any real competitive setting, the fun tends to drop out of the bottom of the barrel for me when the focus of the deck becomes so razor-sharpened that the variety of the cards you can draw falls to maybe 10 or so. It feels better for me to play a luck-based game by the seat of my pants rather than have a solid set-in-stone combo win condition that I'm trying to draw into. I'd rather test my tactics than my strategy, and when all my games start feeling the same, it bores me. Granted, if you're playing for money, I can see the appeal in focusing on consistency, as those game-winning combo conditions are more important, but to me it's just an entirely different game, and it's not one that I'm into. Sealed, Draft, and Commander for life!

I'm not a huge fan of these decks as a tool to help newer players get into MtG. One of the main advantages of the 2022 Starter Kit was that both decks were incredibly simple, focusing on simple mechanics like attacking/blocking, +1/+1 counters and flying. Sure, they were weak, but they all focused on creature combat and, with a few exceptions such as Glorified Sunrise or Stormbound Geist, were very simple and straightforward. Compare that with the LOTR Starter Kit, where most cards are a novel, and even the flavour text takes up way too much space, serving to further overwhelm new players, most of whom are ALREADY overwhelmed by the concept of Land cards and tapping Lands for mana. Do the decks have amazing flavour and serve to illustrate the new mechanics and lore in a fun and interesting way? Yes, absolutely! Are these something you should buy to play with your friends who have never played Magic before? Certainly not! The 2022 Starter Kit is much better in that regard, though I do think the LOTR booklet is a bit better than the 2022 one.

For newer players, I think it's a positive to not have too many 3 and 4 ofs. It's a lot more fun to have varied decks IMO - and it gives more variety to the games compared to a usual constructed deck (which is important if these are designed to be played against each other a good bit). I know that I bounced off more competitive magic (and still am not into the most consistent/fast formats) because the repetitiveness of the decks appealed to a different side of play than the more casual, varied playstyles I was enjoying with battle decks. It also helped me early on with stealing a few wins from my more experienced friend due to variance. Having more constructed decks would cut down on the number of different cards they had, make games more similar, and not appeal to the same demographic overall. So I think I agree with them not going with the 3/4 ofs you would prefer.

I picked up the starter kits from the two previous years; the 2022 one was my first MtG product and introduced me to the game. That being said, the 2021 starter kit was in my opinion a more enjoyable experience to play with. In the end, however, I ended up playing commander, and have never walked back since, I find it far more enjoyable, and far easier to find people to play with. Whilst fun to toy around with and good for learning. I'd personally recommend going straight for a commander deck, and skipping the starter kits entirely.

After not playing MtG since I was a child (25+ years ago), I picked up the starter due to the LotR theme. I absolutely love it and feel like two decks for $25 is a great value. I do feel the opposite of you on not having playsets of cards in the starters because it allows there to be more variety in what you get to see every game. And when I decided to purchase singles and upgrade the two decks, I was able to think about what gameplay mechanics of the decks to I want to focus on like do I want to go all in on the orc army amassing cards (heck yes). It works from a business standpoint too, since even though I was more than happy to leave the decks as they came if I wanted additional copies I'd have to purchase more product. My one complaint is that the forest/plains deck doesn't have a Legolas.

Shout out to those who actually attempted entering those codes in Arena and completely wasting their time like I did just now.

Nice video prof! I picked up this product for less than $20 so I thought I got a good deal. The decks have cool cards and play okay too.

Got a gift bundle for $70 and one of these for another $15 (preordered them as soon as they became available). Made out pretty well in the end I think

They should have made the code thing for magic online in the commanders too

Dude, two people can't have fun at a bar for 3 hours for 25 bucks. $25 here could potentially give you all kinds of weekends worth of fun. It was the best way to introduce my wife to the game and she loves it now. Say it's made our relationship even stronger after 20 years.

Hey! Love your videos, I’m a new MTG arena player just trying to rank up on the sparky rank, I’m nearly bronze now (I think) I bought this starter pack as I like LOTR and is exciting mixing up MTG with it. Although I have a question, do you think is going to be too advanced? Atm I’m playing with the starter decks given from colour challenge but every time I try to upgrade them following KZitem videos it says some cards are illegal… and I’m very confused as I used wildcards for nothing. I have read online I could “unlock all game modes” so I can also play historic and play any card if I understood right, but then I’m still learning the game so not sure if I should unlock everything? I wonder when is going to unlock on its own.. any advice? Subscribed btw, love your videos and your style 😊

The Arena starter kits were always a great product and while this costs more and isn't standard legal, I feel the theme and gameplay is a lot better than the already decent kits in the past.

9:40 I like vanilla creatures. But WOTC needs to print "the best" Vanilla creatures they can, not mediocre ones. Savannah Lions have been obsoleted (ugh), but I wouldn't mind if we got 4x (C) LOTR reskins of Savannah Lions @ (C). Heck, I'd even argue for a 1/4 green Treefolk for G to really show what vanillas can do. Black and Red are "bad" at creaturess, so designing vanillas that play well could be tough, but for French Vanillas 4x (C) 1/1 Deathtouch for B and 3/1 Menace for 1R seem like they'd play well. I'd argue red could get a 4/1 vanilla for 1R @ (C) (so long as WOTC never prints something strictly better); maybe Red or Black could even get a 5/5 for 2CC @ (C) . I'd be unhappy flavorwise, but it'd be an interesting game piece. In short, a good vanilla creature is one you'd consider running over other creatures at the same mana cost, and WOTC hasn't done this since, what? Watchwolf?

WotC isn't getting my money until they apologize to that guy for sending Pinkertons to his house. How much are they paying you to NOT call them out for that bullshit?

There should be NO such thing as a ‘Starter Kit’. How can you play a game WITHOUT ALL of the pieces. TCGs are nothing more than MLM scams. Those with the deepest pockets can AFFORD to access more cards and especially ‘rare cards’. There should be NO such thing as ‘Rare Cards’. All cards should be printed EQUALLY. People with more money than sense.

Yes, if you have a friend to play with. But no, because nobody plays legacy because by the time people buy this, it's out of standard, and nobody plays legacy it's all about commander.

The main thing is that overinflated prices of singles aside, it's pretty mid. They aren't competitive and are less reflective of what gameplay can look like as a whole. That being said, it's a solid beginner product and the cards are better than the nonsense in intro packs and they still have some value in casual or commander settings.
