Designz R Us No not really. IQ means you have the tools to understand a the game at a high level or low level. For example, Kwame Brown has low IQ, James Harden has low off ball defensive IQ. Russ' ability to understand the game and have Supreme confidence is almost unmatched in the NBA. He's top 20 in all time PER. I can't believe I'm actually having an argument because a dumbass said Russ has low IQ.

I hate to use the term "stat stuffer" when describing a player, but you can tell Russ tries getting as many numbers as possible, even if it hurts the team. That's why KD left. He's a beast, no denying that at all, but he's not somebody I'd want to build my team around. He continuously takes horrible shots instead of slowing down and finding a better option, and he steals rebounds from his own teammates. Harden will always make his teammates better than Russ does because Harden can SHOOT. He spaces the defense out a lot more, creating more room for their team offense to maneuver. This is why Golden State is so deadly as well. Since Russ isn't a shooter, the defense can pack it in and only worry about penetration. This clogs the offense up and makes it easier to guard.

Pinning the defender's arms, throwing the ball up just because there's slight contact despite having no expectations of making the shot, consistently relying on the refs to bail him out all the time, etc. Like I said; it's smart but it's incredibly cowardly.
@litgod6370
7 жыл бұрын
lol that's not cowardly, cowardly would be shying away from contact, not attacking defenders, being afraid to shoot a contested shot, and making only safe passes because you dnt want to get turnovers, that's a coward, nothing you described is a coward, a coward in basketball is someone that is afraid to take risks and plays it safe and is afraid of contact and physical play etc lol come on
@timhorton3231
7 жыл бұрын
+Lit God What you just described aren't risks to Harden because the refs make sure to give him the calls. To me that's like going into war, purposefully sticking your foot out of cover and letting the enemy shoot it so you can go home. Good job, you got a purple heart, but you're still a coward. So for Harden to drive into traffic and "attempt" a layup (really just flailing his arms wildly for the contact), there is no risk involved and he gets an outcome better than a made layup because now his opponent picked up a pointless foul. Smart; coward. Westbrook does everything you said, but as coach pointed out, he actually tries to make the well-defended shots instead of seeking the foul from contact like Harden does. He wants to win every possession without the help of the refs. Dumb; hero.
@litgod6370
7 жыл бұрын
Tim Horton lol no it's not, if we are using war terms what harden is doing is baiting his attackers into making a mistake, there is risk involved with doing that, a turnover or missed shot, your speaking as if he shots FT on every single drive, Russ and Davis shoot more ft attempts than he does, harden flails his arms when the defender reach when he he extends his arms on the drives, when he feels the contact he does it, if players don't reach and stay disciplined his technique wouldn't work, saying that's cowardly is like saying drawing a charge is cowardly because your not taking a risk your just trying to get the ref to bail you out, or saying that jumping into a defender after baiting him on a pump fake is cowardly because you just want the refs to bail you out, no that's strategy, if you stay disciplined you can avoid fouling harden when he extends his arms and flail, if you stay disciplined and vertical on a pump fake you can avoid a foul called when a player tries to jump into you, if you stay in control and watch out you can avoid a player setting a charge. Cowardly things are flopping when there was zero contact at all, faking an injury to get out of a game, commiting a foul where your just trying to hurt a player and not make a play on the ball, tripping guys, etc is cowardly. Your basically calling strategy or taking advantage of bad defense or offensive talents or lack of talents as being cowardly, if James harden attacking the rim and baiting defenders to reach is cowardly than you must also think hack a Howard is cowardly, guys pump faking to get players off their feet and jumping into them to draw a foul is cowardly, drawing charges is cowardly, and etc. Those things aren't it's strategy, now if teams don't want to foul harden then stop him from getting to the paint, keep him on the perimeter which they can't because he is too skilled of a scorer

I believe so. Because harden leads his team better than Westbrook. I look at the two players play and harden is a bigger impact to his team than Westbrook is. I see something different in harden. He changed his game style. He has that Lebron type playstyle. More patient player, scores when he needs to or want to, can make plays for his teammates to score. Russel is the powerhouse of his team but his teammates don't play a little better when he's on the court. That's just my opinion.
@Juneth-ou7re
7 жыл бұрын
MICHEAL BLACKSON your right, harden resembles a 2003-2010 lebron when most of his damage was from pick and roll and finding teammates for 3, Westbrook has an Allen Iverson type game almost, he's like a bigger AI. Maybe the wrong comparison, but the ball dominance and low percentage shooting with crazy numbers in terms of ppg

MICHEAL BLACKSON yeah his size and athleticism is the reason for his rebound numbers, AI played with that same motor, attack mode every play on offense, and sometimes lacked on defense just like Russell does, if you can surround shooters around Russell though, I'm not talking about mid 30 percenters, I'm talking like 40 percent 3 point shooters, then I feel like Russell could be even more lethal. More open driving lanes plus more assists

@joshuahart153

I'm not a fan of Russell Westbrook. I acknowledge his supreme talent, his competitiveness, and his athleticism, but I don't like his game or his refusal to play smarter. What irks me about him are three main things: his clutch performance, his defensive awareness, and his ability to keep the offense moving. I haven't looked up stats for clutch performance, but based on what I've seen from him, his clutch performance is inconsistent, inefficient, and often ill-advised. He makes so many mistakes in crunch time, be it turnovers, terrible shots, rushed passes, whatever. Look at last year's WCF, for example. Russ was absolutely terrible at the end of those games. And from what I've seen this year, he's taking the last shot almost every single time, whether he's open or not. He's been doing that for the past two seasons at least, and it's led to the Thunder struggling mightily in the 4th quarter. Russ gets lost a lot on the defensive end, especially off-ball. This one really irks me, because it reinforces the idea that he's just looking to stat pad. Your off-ball defensive awareness doesn't directly affect the stats people are using to argue his greatness, i.e. points, assists, rebounds, PER, any of that stuff. One of the worst examples I've seen was in their recent loss to the Lakers, when on the play with Swaggy P hit the game-winning 3-pointer, Russ was just CAMPING IN THE PAINT WITH TWO OF HIS OTHER PLAYERS WATCHING IT ALL. Seriously, what in the world are you doing? Just trying to grab a rebound? It makes me so mad. And lastly his ability to keep the ball moving. Russ has a tendency to just dribble the clock out unnecessarily, or to stop the flow of an offensive play by just stopping. This happens more often in crunch time. I saw it last year against the Warriors, both in that infamous Feb 27th game and in the playoffs. The play would be running well, the ball would be moving nicely, and then he'd just stand there and dribble the ball, allowing the defense to get set and ruining their momentum. You can't do that so often as a point guard.

very accurate analysis on westbrook. Too bad most westbrook fans are ignorant and they blame everything on durant for the loss in game 6 WCF when westbrook also choked in that game and game 7. Then this season, when okc loses, they say westbrook has no help which is BS bc he has plenty of help. You have Kanter, Morrow, and Oladipo for scoring, and you can use Adams for pick and roll. The reason why okc lose is bc westbrook takes a horrible shot selection down the stretch in key pivotal situations and doesn't get his teammates involved more.

Personally, I like Harden more. He recognizes holes in the defense, he knows when to shoot and when to pass. Regarding Turnovers I feel like Harden is losing the ball more out lack of concentration than actual bad passes or moves. Westbrook takes terrible shots and his decisionmaking is awful. But when he is on, he is unstoppable. Nonetheless, you can't overlook all the weaknesses in Russ' game imho. Harden just feels like the more complete player to me, even though Westbrook is an absolute monster when he is on fire.
@Moneygetjealous

DeadCrow77 seriously, when Russ is on fire, he is an unstoppable force. But you're right, too many times he is out of control. He tries to force the situation too much. Because of how explosive he is, he would force the issue by trying to out jump everyone and so many times he would jump up without having any plans. Harden is a master at picking his spots and uses his craftiness. But when Harden is on fire, he's also an unstoppable force.

Hey Coach Nick @bballbreakdown, I think there is one thing that was left out: Russell Westbrook's game is mostly based on his incredible athleticism and speed. Of course he is still in his prime (28), but how will his game evolve in about 4/5 years? In contrast to him, Harden's game is based more on fundamentals, creativity and a high basketball IQ (offensive). So also in long term, Harden is the more advantage player.

Its no secret that Coach Nick has never liked WB and many of his videos show this. I like Hardens game and the D'antoni system will work wonders for his game. The problem I have with the Rockets is because they play no defence, they try to outscore teams. If the Thunder committee themselves to defence for longer stretches, the Thunder are a better side as seen by their victory against the rockets in OKC when they went ice cold on jumpers. I don't like WB shot selection at times and he is starting to understand more in crunch time how to work things out. People always mention stat stuffing but tbh, in many of the games this year, if Russ hadn't taken those shots, hadn't got those rebounds into transition or gotten those steals to gt on the fast break, the Thunder would be in a worse position. I would take WB over Harden, but if I had either on my team, I wouldn't complain at all.

I'm a huge Westbrook fan and I'd take Harden too. Love how non biased you were this episode. You equally evaluated their strengths and weaknesses. Harden's 3pt threat is so crucial to me. If I were a coach and had to choose I would go Harden. Harden's 3pt threat makes him tough to guard. You stick on him he blows by you, you sag he shoots. WB's 3pt is too shaky so it's easier to just sag off him but his athelticsim makes up for it since he can still blow by his guy but in the long run Hardens game seems like it would age well. Also I've noticed WB turn it over a lot on PNR when he tries to force the pass to Adams. Really wished he would increase his FG% inside. Wish he knew how to control his speed and he needs to learn how to draw fouls when driving. Everyone gives Harden a hard time but drawing fouls is an invaluable skill. Players will be scared to contest fearing a foul after a couple foul calls and that equals easier makes inside.

Well, if Russ had shooters like Harden, then that particular argument wouldn't be close. Oladipo has improved his 3 point shooting, and Morrow is a 3 point sniper, but who else is going to help? Harden has Ariza, Gordon, Anderson. Russ has a slightly below average 3 point shooter in Oladipo, and a 1 way player in Morrow. The man Russ is averaging a damn triple-double for christ sake.
@Miltonman100

@OneAnOnIy
7 жыл бұрын
Miltonman100 I never said that. Coach Nick is saying that he thinks these teams have about the same talent, which they don't. Harden has more and better shooters that space the floor. Who spaces the floor for Russ when Morrow isn't in the game? Oladipo has improved his shooting, but it isn't enough to keep defenses at home with him. Harden and Russ are great players. All I'm saying is that if Russ had some shooters like Harden does, it would space the floor more for Russ, and every time he kicks the ball out, it's to a reliable threat.
@OneAnOnIy
7 жыл бұрын
Miltonman100 Also, if you notice in each clip, defenses are all collapsing on Russ when he drives and it looks like a wall is forming. When Harden drives, he has more space because people are defending and worried about Ariza, Gordon, Anderson, etc. Shooters open up everything, and that's what Russ needs. People like Kyle Korver, J.J. Redick.

Another thing is that when Harden is engaged defensively, he does impress me with being able to keep his man in front of him and make it difficult for them to take a shot. Westbrook is a beast this season and his numbers are insane. I have so much respect for Westbrook but Harden is superior. I am big fans of those two and keep up with them but Harden makes things so much easier for his teammates and his craftiness is what makes him great. A few seasons ago when Durant was in and out of lineups with the foot issues, Westbrook was putting up monster numbers but his team failed to make the playoffs. But with Harden, he manages to drag his team into the playoffs, especially during his first season in Houston where his second and third best players were Parsons and Lin. I think last year Harden really proved to me his greatness. Last year was a mess for the rockets. Harden had many bad moments and started the season slow. The entire Rockets could not hit an open shot and everyone had a down year because of locker room issues that really just took the team's spirit. The rockets were horrible and they were not supposed to even make the playoffs. But Harden dragged the Rockets and he won the Rockets so many games where they were supposed to lose. His turnovers were high but he will the rockets to win on many occasions. I remember a game where the entire team was just awful and whenever Harden sat, the Rockets would immediately fall behind by 15 and he had to pull them back every time.

Harden's biggest problem is defense, something he's at least trying to work on. While Russ isn't nearly as bad he's not exactly a top-tier defender either. In terms of skill and basketball knowledge, Harden seems to be much more efficient. Westbrook's biggest advantage is that he's fast. He's an average shooter but he's too often out of control when moving that fast. If I look at Curry or Irving, they have much more control when they get to the rim. As far as assists, it's strictly because they are superstars on a team with average players. It's how LeBron gets so many assists and he's not even a guard. Not to call his team "average" (because I think the Cavs are pretty solid); it's just that when he gets the ball and drives you HAVE to send help and he's got the vision to find that open guy when that happens. Harden is clearly the more efficient player. Not only would I much rather have Harden in a clutch situation in general, he's more likely to hit a tough 3 (or draw a worthy foul) than Westbrook.
@Shaunny2011
7 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think when James Harden plays D, the opponent is like 'what', then misses due to the surprise. Both are great players, but I feel like they both have high chance of getting injured. The need to carry the whole team and do everything, Harden tries so hard to draw fouls( awkward shots and flopping), Russ being so aggressive on the court.

Nope. Pretty clear Russ is better overall from basic stats alone and athletic ability. Just different archetypes and playing styles obscure his dominance. He's also the better defender by a long shot; this analysis of a select few plays shows the bias and the predetermined winner of this video. Most analysts don't like Russ because he is raw power and talent incarnate, not a supposed crafty or "thinking man's" player like Harden.

B. H I've watched about 10 games this season. Specifically said that stats alone qualify him as better, but went on to explain why he's better beyond that. Russ gets more steals and rebounds than Harden, and I'd like to see one on one what would happen, because Harden is a lazy defender, whereas Russ is pretty active, despite losing his man on a play rotation. They're both fantastic players, but this is no comparison. Thunder shut down Harden when they played this year. We'll see who's better at the end of the season.

He even bizarrely criticized Russ for not being able to get to the line as much as Harden the notorious flopper & praised that. Even though Russ gets to the line more than anyone this season! RW's Box Plus/Minus is the highest in the league, & of course he neglected to mention rebounds & intangibles. & who cares about win shares when OKC are on a winning streak, that's bound to change, they have 1 more win since he made the vid! You'd expect a lot of turnovers though, they both have the highest usage rates in the league. Also turnovers aren't that much of an issue if you look at the assist to turnover ratio, Harden is above a 2/1 t/o ratio.

I wouldn´t say that people are hating on Westbrook, its just sometimes he just forces things too much. By the way since when has Harden been hyped in the nba, all i have been seeing the years before were Har_en video´s and comments. So thats why I think there is nobody hating rightnow, it´s just a comparison and he really pointed out why he puts harden over westbrook. But its really close

Miltonman100 lmfao thats Capella putting up good numbers, not him being a better player than OKC's big men. OKC easily has the better squad, it's just Harden can get you more Ws than Westbrook.

No it's just that Houston is built around Harden with 3 pt snipers, Westbrook with those spacing the floor, instead of everyone collapsing in on him in the paint, GAME OVER.

Quick question. Does anybody think there's a difference between being a smarter player and a better player. Some would say this one makes better decisions but not necessarily better then option A while others might say because this guy makes better decisions that makes him a better choice.
@kylemedwards1977
7 жыл бұрын
Darryl Wallace There is of course a difference but IQ is an attribute that contributes towards who is the better player same way someone can be a better all around player but not a better player
@Moneygetjealous
7 жыл бұрын
Darryl Wallace A smart player that makes great decisions is an attribute, that's why CP3 is considered great mainly because of his IQ. Lamar Odom was a great all-around player, but he's not better than Kobe even though Kobe isn't an all around player. Lebron James is the best All Around player in the history of the NBA but he's not better than Jordan. There are so many things and even intangibles that makes a player great.
@darrylwallace2428

Lebron has a high I.Q himself but it gets him into trouble sometimes

Of course, guys like Pablo Prigioni and Marcelo Huertas are brilliant players with iq and vision through the roof; however I dont think either of them is making the all star team this year, there are "less smart" players who do their job better using other tools. I wouldnt choose Dwight as a smart player, but that is not what he is there for, he can get you 14 11 2 and in his case is much more valuable than the other two for various reasons
@cameronno6039

Moneygetjealous: What did you think Kobe was not good at? He was a great all-around player. He just was a selfish player, but he had off the charts IQ and ability. There were no inherent flaws in his game that he could not do. Although, his weakest area IMO was his lack of a consistent 3 late in his career. Odom was an overrated player. His defense was mediocre. His rebounding was great and passing was well above par, but his shooting was garbage as was his mentality and ball IQ. Honestly, I disagree with the bulk of your comparisons because MJ was an incredible all-around player in ever asset. His only weakness, literally, was a lack of a deep three. I don't know if I would consider LBJ as the best all-around player in history either. hat title is probably MJ to me. LBJ has a better case for best athlete in history than he does all-around player IMO due to his lack of shooting and inconsistent clutch performance. CP3 was a great mention though for his IQ, but he is also an all around player. A better comparison would likely be a Billups vs. AI comparison. Billups had MUCH better ball IQ, but I would personally consider AI the MUCH better player for his career (although many disagree but I can add much to support my opinion).

Hardens style of play works better he carried his team by himself to the 2nd seed while Westbrook didn't make the playoffs without Durant I'm not saying that he is bad of course but Westbrook is great but his bball IQ let's him down sometimes
