Great stuff, would be good if you could compare some of Kirks soloing in comparison with other players of that day such as Marty Friedman or say Alex Skolnick to see how his technique compares against theirs. I know why Kirk gets a bad rap but for me Metallica wouldn’t be the same without him. He’s a very melodic player with the right amount of aggression in his playing and he fits in that band perfectly. The general masses don’t even really care how good the lead guitarist in a band is, only us guitar players really know the difference between an amazing player and an OK one, they just like the music for what it is...Keep up the good work! :-)

Here is the thing about Kirk. He was taught by Joe Satriani who also taught Steve Vai, and Vai is light years ahead of Kirk. Yea you can say that they don't play the same style of music as Vai is rock and Kirk is metal which had different feels at that time, but Kirk just never had interesting note choice in opinion. Sure he had the speed and technique, but if you listen to when Dave did the same solos for Metallica, he was faster. When Kirk plays melodically, It's all just boring notes to me. And I used to like his playing when I first started guitar. Then as I got into Megadeth, I heard Freeman and that changed my perception on what is good playing. That guy knows how to phrase solo passages. I'm not a Kirk hater, and I think he can make good solos. I really like Master of Puppets and The Day that Never Comes solos. Those are his best in my opinion. I won't say he is a trash guitar player. I just don't think he is that interesting.

Kirk is the right lead guitarist for Metallica. Nobody else can write Kirk solos, because he marches to the beat of his own drum. Who cares if anyone is technically more proficient than him. The truth is that nobody else on this earth could have come up with the solos and music that he has, which have contributed to Metallica becoming so successful. Too many guitarists these days are so busy trying to attain technical mastery of their instrument, that they are forgetting about song writing, boring us with a blizzard of sameness and killing the genre of music that we all love. The current top 10 metal guitaristsI all sound the same. I blame technology. When Hendrix hit the scene, he created a upsurge in interest in the guitar, but there was no MTV or instructional "how to" videos, or even any music books to show what he was doing. The result was a host of unique sounding bands in the 60's, 70's and 80's with hundreds of great guitarists pushing their own abilities in their own unique way. Eddy came along and suddenly everyone was tapping because there were now "how to play like Eddy" books, videos and tapes available. Malmsteen came along and the internet is now full of instructional videos revealing the secrets of neo-classical guitar technique in excruciating detail. This quest for technical sameness is killing innovation and resulting iin less and less youngsters taking up the instrument. The instrument has lost its aura of mystery and magic because innovation is being replaced by technique. It is guys like Kirk Hammet who are keeping true metal alive by having the guts to march to the beat of ttheit own drum. I say good for him and long may he continue to do so.

Ever since that Vivo kids film "March to the Beat of my Own Drum" has become quite a meme. Either way, good points for the most part. I think the biggest problem is not the youth hyperfocusing on technique, but to copy others to impress. Why take the time to creatively write a song that will impress no one. In fact, the kid that can play the popular tune will get all the attention. They don't pick up or continue playing the instrument with the proper mindset. The fingers move, the sound comes out, but the person has no idea what they are doing musically or why it works.

In terms of the G minor pentatonic solo in "The Shortest Straw", would it be possible to assume it'd be in E locrian? Since the G minor pentatonic scale shares a similar set of notes as with the E locrian scale, and the riff being played has the notes E, F, G and A#/Bb which are also in the E locrian scale. (if we don't refer to the 5ths in the power chords) Correct me if I'm wrong, it's just me being curious. :p

Been playing 13 years Kirk is still up there in my favorites. I personally like guitarist thar play with a lot of feeling, emotion and that’s something Kirk does very well and in my opinion writing solos with the incredible amount of feeling that Kirk does Is something that a lot of players just can’t do. Anyone can learn to be a great technical player but that means nothing at all to me unless you car write great music like it or not this is why Kirk is in the position that he’s in and guys like malmsteen are in the position they are in. I know local guitar players that play much cleaner and WAY more technical then Kirk does and nobody knows them or cares! One player was in a highly technical math core band who toured around the world, was on a good label, became endorsed by Ibanez for his highly technical and precise playing. Ibanez actually made him send a video of him playing with a clock because they didn’t believe he could play as fast as he could they were very interested in working with him but he plays so fast they just didn’t believe it because very few people can do it that fast, that clean and that technical it just doesn’t happen. Well this poor guy is just ur average guy I feel so bad that he is so talented and he doesn’t get the notoriety he deserves and the money that comes with it! It’s just crazy that someone who is so good and so much better (technically) then so many famous rock stars and only a small number of people that listen to this type of music knows him he has even said himself he knows that people don’t understand the music because it’s just so different.

I think u are way off. U can criticize Zakk (or anybody's) style but Zakk's technical ability is still sharp and light year's ahead of Kirk. Zakk can still competently play stuff he played decades ago. Kirk's technical ability has fallen off a cliff. His live playing this century is really bad. Now maybe that's due to physical problems (arthritis, tendinitis, carpet tunnel) and/or substance abuse issues. But if u listen to the way Zakk plays NOW versus Kirk it ain't close.

If you're examining Kirks lead playing from a modern perspective it is quite easy in retrospect to poke holes in his playing. I was a kid when Thrash Metal kicked off and I was a huge fan at the time. Ride the Lightning being a record I bought only just slightly after it was released. I wouldn't say I'm a Metallica fanboy, far from it, but if you're ranking Kirk objectively alongside his peers at that time I'd say that he was arguably one of the more talented and memorable lead players within that specific genre. Kirk obviously gets the most flak simply because Metallica are now a household name and are the only band out of the whole 80s Thrash Metal scene (Big four, 2nd wave etc) that achieved global mainstream success. I'd argue that, although maybe not the most technical or virtuosic player (big deal) he definitely was up there during the mid to late 80s. Off the top of my head some of the most obviously notable Thrash soloists of the 80s I can think of (that were arguably better or on par) are: Dave Mustaine, Chris Poland, Jeff Waters, Craig Locicero, Alex Skolnick, Marty Freidman and Gary Holt.

The one thing all these people seem to have in common is no link with them playing guitar. I wonder why ???????. If Kirk was really that bad he would have booted out of Metallica a long time ago. They could easily cherry pick a great guitarist to play for them. For example, I remember hearing rusty Cooley for the first time and being bored after the first minute of a 4 minute full on shred song. It was like he was so preoccupied with showcasing how fast and flashy he is that there was no heart in it. Then you got dimebag. His solos are not that technical either but every one is so killer, which for that reason I think makes him a better player than rusty. So is kirk good? I think so.

I think most people miss the real issue with Kirk: It's not about any one particular solo - it's about how he does the same 3-4 cliche, repetitive techniques in nearly every solo. Some good. Some are great, even. But when you start looking at his entire catalog as a whole you realize that he's very rote, mechanical, cliche, and repetitive. There's not much musicality in his playing at all. It's purely mechanical and almost solely always in the standard minor pentatonic scale with very little out-of-the-box playing. His solos rarely tell a story or have different chapters, and they almost always fall back to the same licks, escapes, and climaxes as he uses every time. It's not that he's a bad guitarist. He's just very repetitive and mechanical. Like, you know you listen to some guitarists who just "get it?". Like they have the ear for it and can play anywhere, everywhere, any scale, any mode, and phrasing and make it fit? That's not Kirk. He knows his pentatonic scale and he sticks with it in the same positions, and the only way he knows to get from one section to the next is through the same 2-3 transitions/escapes he always uses.

He does good, but indeed with low resources. The problem he has is that given his very limited techniques his creativity is capped to the same pentatonic excersize phrases when he speeds up. The more resources you have, the more creative and more options you got. Once you start playing his solos you realize they are pretty similar

Here's the funny thing, people crap on Kirk for not being a great guitar player, people crap on wires for not being a good drummer, people crap on James for not being a top-tier singer, but at the end of the day it shows that you don't have to be the best musicians to make the best music. And the numbers don't lie.

It's not all about speed. Melody is a huge part of his playing.

I think if you skip this whole video and go to the part where he tells you some of the riffs he wrote for Metallica then you will find the obvious answer there. He wrote some of the best riffs in one of the most successful bands in history!!! But still people will argue weather he is good or not 😑

The thing is that every compliment he has for how difficult it is to play any certain part of a Kirk Hammett solo is really misleading because Kirk Hammett himself can't play any of it, it's all full of errors and out of key... no kidding it's difficult, KH is trying to do way more than his limited skills allow him

I don’t think the questions was ever if Kirk was good or not… most people generally say he’s overrated… and I tend to agree… 9/10 KZitem vids of Metallica playing live you’ll find Kirk using a Wah pedal so the Wah jokes are justified 😂☠️. Keep in mind overrated doesn’t mean he’s a Bad guitarist by any means… it just means he’s more big than what he can bring to the table compared to other guitarists like Marty Friedman, Randy Rhoads, Jason Becker and others that aren’t as big as Kirk but much better with phrasing or better technical skills like Buckethead Or the legendary robot Chris Broderick

Yes kirk Hammett is freaking awesome, I don’t know why people hate him just because he uses wah. Wah makes it harder actually, very talented! Hes also slightly better than Dave mustaine at guitar.

Its doesnt make it harder. It makes no difference, it just makes it sound different. Worse...but he uses it because none of it is good enough without some effect to spice it up.

Nope James Hetfield was one of the reasons I wanted to play guitar. The rythm guitar interested me a lot more than the lead. Have I been the lead guy, yep. But I'm all about the rythm. Learned a lot from Kirk to though later on as I progressed as a guitarist.

I wondered the same thing as I was editing this video. Promise I wasn’t looking at a script, but I’m new to the whole “talking on camera” thing so I’ll chalk it up to that. In my latest video I feel like I did a bit better job of not looking at the side of the screen like I did in this one.

@@alecsye7194 Right, man. Anyway cool video, you highlighted the bright and the not-so-bright sides of Kirk's playing and played his licks very well (Suhrs sound great to begin with). This is the kind of video not everybody who either glorifies or bash Kirk would bother doing. And I agree with you about the solos on DM and HTSD. Wish he came up with more original ideas but hey, it's been so many years and perhaps he just runs out of them.

Musician are not define as musician due their skills, is how they deliver the music to people, its definitely his mentor joe is miles away from kirk but why kirk sell more album its how he deliver his stuff to people

Kirk's main problem is that he did not master many of basic concepts of guitar : intonation, bends and vibrato. As a consequence he has poor note choice, uninteresting phrasing and overall bad melodic sense. Having said that, he has some of the best solos ever done, he is a very good performer with a nice guitar tone live and has great stage presence. And I think that is enough to qualify him as a guitar hero.

You have to understand. This is why you’re not a Kirk Hammett and it’s why he ended up where he is. The clashing isn’t “passing” its a feeling...
