"Of the last quartets of Beethoven, it can only be said that to be appreciated, they must be heard; not once, not three times, not ten times, but again and again, over and over. These works are supposed to be difficult to grasp... The main thing to do is to forget preconceived ideas about what you are used to hearing and to let the music speak for itself..." -- David Hall, The Record Book (1940)

You can make the same claim for other composer's works.

A friend of mine helped me set up a new cartridge, mainly the fiddly wires. It sounded "terrible" / not right. So I checked with my cartridge alignment protractor and it was ~5mm - too far forward. After pulling it back to the right position everything was good. To me it shouldn't be any worse at the end than the centre (between the 2 alignment points, as far as alignment). There is only the tighter grooves, which I don't hear on a correctly set up cartridge.

If you can find it, try to get Herbert Blomstedt and Dresden's recording of Beethoven Symphony 1.

Gramophone Magazine reviewed versions of Beethoven Symphony #1 and the box set you show here was just pipped at the post by another box set conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Bernstein’s being referred to as an Unexpected Classic.

Ah - so I am getting excited about a performance which resonates with the experts. I suppose it proves I have some taste in these matters. Thanks for that info.

Furtwangler perhaps? Don't have any particular performance but I always fall back to Furtwangler :)

This is not one of my favourite Beethoven symphonies. I feel that the best performance by far is that by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra.

Bernstein is not the best. I posted 2 videos detailing how Bernstein conducted Beethoven the wrong way, tinkering with the orchestration to make Beethoven sound trumpet heavy. He conducted all 9 of Beethoven's symphonies on TV using double or triple the number of string Beethoven did. He added more trumpets and then said, "Beethoven's orchestrations are bad! He has the trumpets sticking out. They're drowning out everyone else." He is caught red handed on tape destroying the beautiful sound Beethoven created and lying about it to trash Beethoven's reputation. My videos explain this and other stunts he pulled in detail.

@@LPCLASSICAL The best recordings of Beethoven's symphonies are the early 1960's recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic with Herbert von Karajan conducting.
