More on “monofloral” honey: No beekeeper can guarantee, of course, that a bee hasn’t visited another type of flower. However, there are best practices they follow: Beehives are placed in an area dominated by manuka in full bloom. The honey is immediately extracted following the end of the nectar flow, and the honey is laboratory tested to ensure it meets thresholds for pollen count (and other variables).

I live in New Zealand and have been buying Manuka honey for years. We saw a sharp increase in price when we had an influx of Chinese legal immigrants over the last 15 years. I would see them grouped around the honey section in supermarkets debating on which one to buy in bulk to send back to China. This doesn't happen anymore as there is now a more direct commercial supply to China but the demand grew exponentially because of the belief in its health benefits. Here in NZ we don't experience the over-blown hype about its health benefits like I've seen on American TV...all we experience is the 2-3 times of it's price increase.

Hi Nicole, Thanks for the great discussion on Manuka Honey! Important point for wound care: Only use medical grade Manuka Honey that's been gamma-irradiated and sterilized for wounds. In many places, these dressings need medical device registration. Regular Manuka Honey is great for consumption, but wounds require the sterilized version. Medical-grade Manuka Honey dressings are fantastic for wound healing (in my experience!). Regards.

I'm a New Zealand beekeeper, not in a manuka honey area, so I have nothing to gain here my main honey crop is thyme honey and I completely disagree with the gamma sterilized comment. All raw honey regardless of point of origin has the ability to produce hydrogen peroxide because of a enzyme that honey bee's introduce into all honey called glucose oxidase. To quote a research paper from the national library of medicine called "glucose oxidase, an enzyme Ferrari" Glucose oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of β-d-glucose to d-glucono-δ-lactone and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of molecular oxygen. All honey has this property if it has not been heat treated or zapped with radiation which destroys the enzymes and makes it as worthwhile as a jar of sugar syrup. Natural honey is antimicrobial, antiseptic and promotes healing. Irradiated honey does not, the enzymes are destroyed. Manuka honey contains additional complexes but all natural raw unheated and unirradiated honeys have healing benefits, however some honeys can and do contain toxins and should be avoided such as rhododendron and tutin honeys.

They haven’t tried to suppress it… Anyone who has lived anywhere that “manuka” honey isn’t harvested knows that it doesn’t matter… How? Our mothers and grandmothers put honey from our area on wounds and fed it to us as kids and that is how we didn’t get sick. I would love to believe my family and others we know are just super human… But we’re not.. It’s the average, local raw honey we eat. Manuka is pushed because it can only be found in Australia and big pharma in American can capitalize on it… How else would we get it over here? Hilarious.

@@Tinycadancer Big Pharma m in fact, stay oppose to Manuka honey usage. American big pharma stay oppose to anything natural : bee propolis, honey, shilajit, chaga, reishi, name it. They employed CDC and FDA to suppress natural remedies usage if they presented not in form of capsules, tablets or pills. I recently learned WHY big pharma has such an attitude. The answer was simple - they cannot reserve right over natural products, they cannot be patented. That is why ZERO dollars is invested into Manuka honey or other natural remedies research. That is why FTC ( Federal Trade Commission) prohibits natural remedies manufacturers to say a single word about health supporting benefits of their products, no open advertisement permitted. Pity.

Assuming the vast majority of consumers buying Manuka honey as a medicine and not as a sweetener, a simple math can tells you the following. To deliver the same amount of a dietary Methylglyoxal into your bloodstream ( for maintaining a proper immune support and antibacterial effect) you can chose to consume 1 tspoon of MGO500+ or 5 tspoons of MGO100+ or 10 tspoons of MGO50+ . A regular New Zealand export type jar of Manuka honey contains 250 gr or 8.8 oz of honey or 15-16 tspoons ( it stated on a label). Now I offer you to make your own calculation counting US dollars you spent for cheaper Manuka vs. "expensive' one. Just multiply the cost of MGO100+ on 5 ( here in Brooklyn, NY MGO100+ costs around $25) , so $25 x 5 = $125.00 Here at Trader Joe's MGO50+ costs $13.99 , so multiply it by 10 = $139.90 Same time you can buy MGO550+ Manuka honey for $65.00 ( well, at least such price is on our website) Now I'd like to ask you again, in what potency you stay in favor ?

I love manuka honey. It has a distinct taste that is different from non-manuka honey. Primarily, it is not as cloyingly sweet. At the lower MGO/UMF it has a subtle note that is hard to describe, but it takes a turn from sledgehammer sweetness of non-manuka honey. Higher MGO/UMF tastes more medicinal to me and veers even more from the taste of non-manuka honey, which makes it less enjoyable for me. If I want medicinal, I'll just take medicine. I don't get the demand for high MGO/UMF, really. It might makes sense for diabetics who want to take less for the same perceived benefit. Like all natural products with unique properties, manuka might have a stronger physiological response depending on the individual. If certain people experience a strong response in their body, I am inclined to believe them. For me, I love the taste of manuka, so I don't mind taking more spoonfuls of the lower MGO/UMF.

For the people asking: No, you can't make Manuka honey by adding the tree oil in regular honey, because a big part of the flavor difference comes from the different glucose/fructose ratio in it, which differs from most types of honey and is significantly lower in fructose.

I'm curious, in order for this honey to be derived from a single plant that plant would need to be in bloom for the entire season. In a warm climate I would assume the bees would be active all year around. Does the Manuka plant bloom all year and can they control bees from seeking out another flowering plant? This is an observation. I don't know if anyone knows the answer.

Anti-bacterial only works for bacteria. Many ailments are viral or fungal in nature and it won't help at all. I don't think the anti-bacterial properties are what's soothing sore throats as even the cheapest artificial honey seems to help and most common forms of throat infections are viral. Outside of direct contact to skin and strep throat, im very skeptical of any medicinal properties. It also clearly doesn't effect the gut biome as the anti-bacterial properties don't discriminate between the "good" and "bad" gut bacteria. Therefore it would upset our gut biome like anti-biotics do.

Every raw honey has antibacterial properties. So just for that it's not worth it to overpay for Manuka. That said, Manuka has multiple biochemical compounds not very well studied that do appear have significant healing properties and antibacterial BS has nothing to do with that. These compounds come from the tea plant indigenous to Australia and NZ and provide immune support, can balance hormones, are anti-inflammatory, can help with arthritis, skin diseases and heart protective (this is not exhaustive list). As Nicole said, high price does not guarantee quality, this is true, so do your homework. Australian Manuka is cheaper but appears to have the same quality as NZ.

Manuka honey is produced from the Tea Tree, which is indigineous to Australia,, introduced to New Zealand. Australia has been producing it for over a hundred years. NZ named it Manuka, a Maori word, and patented it to cut out Australia.. They sued Australia for using the word, and lost the case. Australian Manuka is far more potent, because we have over 30 varieties of Tea Tree, NZ only one.. Recently some NZ beekeepers were prosecuted for selling fake Manuka, because they couldn't keep up with demand.... 7:17

Every bee works incredibly hard to make honey for their hive. It belongs to the bees - not for humans to greedily use. There are so many natural, tasty sweeteners including maple syrup, coconut syrup, a multitude of sugars, molasses, malted syrups, real corn syrup (not high-fructose), golden syrup, and then there are those syrups, made of kind-hearted folks, that taste like honey but are vegan, etc., etc. In one honey bee's entire life they make less than a gram (0,8 gram) of honey. Honey bees are also a invasive species in all of North and South America (Australasia and other island nations too). They crowd out natural pollinators disrupting our eco systems. Please consider other sweeteners as people don't need honey but the bees actually do. Thanks :D
