One thing you are forgetting is that in small run product designs (these won't be mass produced) where some R&D needs to be done, will make a the product cost more from that alone. Not to mention a "brand" premium. So comparing the cost directly do a mass produced shoe that is not "branded" is not apples to apples comparison. Granted, even with that in mind, it still seems like it's a bit of a steep cost.

I've been wearing Atoms for a few years now. When I bought my first pair, they would send you three pairs a quarter size apart (so 10.25, 10.5, and 10.75 for me who usually wears 10.5) and you could keep the two shoes that fit you best even if they were different sizes. So the two I picked were the best fitting shoes I've ever had (left 10.75, right 10.5). And the quality was good... For $60. They still do the quarter sizes but they don't try the three pair try-on and different sizes for each foot thing anymore. But it's still a pretty ok shoe... for $60. I really couldn't imagine paying more for them.

The synthethic leather (vinyl) was visible from the high resolution pictures on the website lol...I'd guess the mesh isn't moisture-wicking either, it's definitely not 3D Spacer mesh. MKBHD should have partnered with a real shoe company/manufacturer in China.

Huge MKBHD fan! Don’t apologise, people need to be held to account, the shoes are not upto par and the limited number and lack of economies of scale can only justify a price to a certain point! Pricing them the same as Yeezy 350s when they came out is crazy! Thanks a really impartial and fair video! I’m sure Marques will respect it too!

High price points enable snob appeal to be satisfied by purchasers. A retired friend painted as a hobby for years and his wife wanted the paintings out of the garage. He sold some for $25 or so at flea markets. He got a space at an outdoor street art fair and sold the same paintings for $2,500 a pop. He sold out.

Watching Marques' video at the time of release, it sounds like the design process was extremely long. I'm wondering if maybe Atoms approached him about a collab, discovered he took it waaaay more seriously than they were expecting, and without the massive infrastructure that their competitors have, ended up having to charge the consumer for an R&D process that was costly to them. Either way, happy to see an honest review of these, and looking forward to better work from MKBHD and Atoms.

I don't buy that. All the Atoms shoes looks like they are similarly built but with only a mesh upper, and the cheapest ones they sell cost $145. It's more likely that Atoms are the ones doing the cash grabbing, and Marques just put his design on them and gets a kickback.

Sneakers is one of the hardest & most expensive retail/merch item to produce, the MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) itself to start a decent sneakers production is much higher compared to other merch item like jacket, tshirt, and any kind of apparel. What MKBHD sneakers like to me is what you can get with the lowest MOQ you can get to start producing sneakers. With already made available outsole mold & shoe last, also wholesale garment that aren't a custom order

I've had them for over half a year and I've never had more comfortable shoes. So far they have no hint of problems, just the sole is harder to clean because of the pores. I guess the copper is really working in there somehow, because I still can't smell anything from the boots after half a year of wearing them. So either way I see it as an advantage. I bought them mainly because of the emphasis on comfort and design, so I don't regret it at all. The elastic laces are an absolutely amazing thing for me, and it's a shame that they're not on all shoes...What similar shoes with equivalent comfort can you recommend? I'm no shoe expert, so I'm happy to take advice. What are the Vessi's for example?

Great to point out that MKDHD might not even know what's up with his shoe. What knowledge of tech? His degree is in business and pretty much all he does is quote spec sheets and then compares slightly different versions of android or ios. He does not do in depth reviews at all. I mean all the best to him as he has gained huge success but his tech knowledge is pretty lacking. He has a ton of biases (as do we all) but if your trying to do comparisons and reviews you have to try and not have that. He fanboys over apple and tesla products too much as well.
@profwilliams2772

IF your argument is that MKDHD knows nothing about tech, you gotta have a better reason than, his degree is in business. Is that even an argument? Seriously, that's a rather silly gauge to whether or not someone knows something about tech- Steve Jobs, no degree. Bill Gates, no degree. Mark Zuckerberg, no college. To you, I guess, they also don't know much about tech. Marques is a consumer tech reviewer, just like Joanna Stern at the Journal, Wirecutter at the Times or any other popular consumer facing "tech" reviewer. For anything "in depth" I'm sure you have others to watch. He doesn't cut apart the latest iPhone to tell you how great the 4 nanometer chip is, because his viewers don't care about that. That is NOT who he is. But I'm not here to defend him, his millions of viewers and place as a top KZitemr speaks volumes against your comment. Oh, and I have a bunch of different college degrees, so my KZitem comments should be taken much more seriously than anyone without. 😁 @@corail53
