So I don't associate wokeness just with progressive ideals, but that weird smugness of owning the political side. Sulu was respected as an officer but they didnt make a deal about it. It was matter of fact, which sold it. I grew up believing those ideals because I saw it working and treated as this is how the world works. The right side of the political spectrum does this as well., but there isn't a name for it. And when there was a lecture, it was directed at a character not the audience.

Star Trek has always been progressive and somewhat “woke.” From women having a bigger leadership role being in command positions to first interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura to the Trill relationships of past partners and with Captains Sisko and Janeway leading everybody. The crews have always been diverse with different backgrounds and ideologies. But they weren’t in your face about it like they are in ST Discovery. That burns my toast. Edit: grammar.

Gene Roddenberry and the cast and production crew behind TOS always mentioned how hard it was to get the show to air because network executives and a lot of the viewing community didn’t want to see what the show depicted - interracial couples and romance, women in leadership roles, interspecies romance (Kirk and all the alien women), etc. they addressed issues of prejudice into the series like in “Balance of Terror” episode with the Romulans. I guess those themes just carried on and then we grew up and were used to it. I don’t recall concerns with Sisko or Janeway or their crew. I think the biggest concern and pushback was that they pivoted away from bottle episode (if that’s what it’s called) format like in TOS and TNG to the long term plot elements like the Dominion War. As well as the black and white good and evil themes, DS9 and Voyager and Enterprise became more grey. Then a shift came in the writing for new representation and I guess it sort of took us by surprise. They could’ve just written it and not say anything and let critics discuss it. While the representation doesn’t bother me, the thing about Discovery is that they do this whole jump 900 years in the future and skip over everything to do their own thing. There’s plenty they could’ve built on between and off the shows and movies. Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks I like. Great, now my blood pressure is spiking.

Due to Romulans travelling back in time changes some points in history, the new Trek of SNW and Discovery are actually a new timeline that is not the same of TOS of the 60s. In Strange New Worlds, they do an episode showing Romulans travelled back in time and covertly changed some points in Earths history in a Khan as a child episode. Star Trek has always been 'woke' that was the entire point of the show. What changed over the series was the balance between telling a story and sending a message changed. It used to be that the message was part of the story, now it's becoming the story. Part of that is the technology available. A transporter literally takes you apart and rebuilds you, it shouldn't be impossible to tweak those settings to change an X chromosome to a Y for example. Trans or gender fluid should not be an issue at all because with the technology available it should be as easy to change as the press of a button.

Men would kick the hell what of anyone who wants it. Women would smile at an enemy gain their trust and when able to do so, a woman would gut stab that enemy and walk away leaving them to bleed out.
