German knife laws are hilariously stupid (as long as you don't live there...if you do, they're just sad). While you summed up the rough basics of #42 for folding knives (either 2-handed opening with lock, or one-handed opening without lock; blade length weirdly doesn't matter at all), what *defines* two-handed opening is neither the manufacturer of the knife, nor its construction and design intent, but whether the relevant authorities (be that a police officer on the street or a judge, etc.) *feel* is two-handed opening. That's right, if a cop can get your #42 tagged two-handed opening Boker knife open with one hand with "reasonable ease" (again, not defined anywhere), you suddenly have a one-handed opening knife and are in trouble. There's even been cases where slipjoints with safety features (like a choil that prevents the blade from closing on your finger) have been considered locking since while your hand grips the knife the blade is "fixed" in place. Amusingly enough, the safest way to carry a knife in Germany (both as in safe for your fingers when you use it and safe for getting into a control) is to carry a fixed blade of up to 12cm/~4.7" blade length (which does actually give you quite a bit of room to work with, pun intended).

Hey David Wes here, curious about something. I have over 40 years law enforcement and have never heard of anyone having their knife measured at random, UNLESS they were being arrested for something else and it was found on them. Of course I understand TSA and places where one would be searched, but what are the chances of some police person asking to measure your knife for no probable cause? Maybe you have heard of others who were stopped and their knife measured, but like I said, I have never heard of it. Of course my experience is limited to NC, so maybe other states are more of a Knife Nazi :) Appreciate you.

There are many reasons for carrying a small blade and you still want something nice. Here in NSW Australia while some knife types are outright illegal (eg. autos/assisted, push daggers and some others) size itself is not a restriction. The primary criteria for carrying a knife is 'for a lawful purpose' (the laws list about 6 or so broadly defined lawful purposes - but self defence is not one). So carrying a 23" katana is completely lawful providing you have a lawful purpose for doing so.

I live in Massachusetts and carry whatever I want to carry, as long as I can keep it concealed; switchblades, larger folders, etc. I've been carrying a small fixed blade for a few years now; originally a Lionsteel M1, then an MKM Makro and over the last several months; a Lionsteel H1. I don't concern myself because there's pretty much nothing that is actually useful that's legal. I remember laughing when I first looked up what "California legal," and saw they were all less than 2". Then I discovered that Massachusetts law. You should count yourself fortunate that you never ran into any Boston police with a 2½" knife, because the state law says the limit is 1½"!!! Though I can understand why there'd be a mistake, so does everyone else, including those who live here. They make an exception for folding knives, but like said here; it can't lock. You can't even legally carry a multi tool because of the lock. So, at the end of the day it's "in for a penny, in for a pound." It's not like an automatic is more illegal than a small locking knife, do what's the difference. I hear that people are current suing the state to try to get them laws relaxed, I'm not holding my breath though. The law is purposely vague, consisting of a single sentence. Interestingly; if you go by the letter of the law any of those fixed blades I mentioned aren't outright banned. It says you can't carry an automatic, dagger, dirk, stiletto or knife with a "device" that allows the knife to be opened when pulling it out of a pocket: a small normal fixed blade is none of those. Admittedly, one would probably have to go through a trial to skate on a charge. I think it's absurd that what literally amounts to the first and oldest man made tool in the history of our species being illegal.

Good video, because the last thing a person wants to do is get a cool knife and get into some un cool trouble. Knife laws in my opinion should be the same across the country and fair, Most kitchen knives are more of a danger than most knives you can fit into your pocket. And plus a hammer, a rock 🪨, a guitar, anything almost can be a deadly weapon if a person wanted to use it in a malicious way. Unfortunately you can't stop evil by making weapons illegal. An evil minded person will always find a way to do their evil, like they say where there's a will there's a way. I don't feel a person should be punished for having a knife in their possession if that's the only thing they are guilty of. Now if they threaten or use the knife in an evil manner than they should be in trouble. Should be common sense. Idk I'm not claiming to know it all or be the judge but I definitely am trying to follow the laws of the land because I don't want to get into any trouble.

people disrespect 8cr13mov ,but it takes a scary edge is super easy to sharpen and only needs a few swipes on a cutlery steel to bring it back to razor. for EDC i have no problem with it.

Great video! Wish knife makers would realize these segments of the market need more love. Two knives I'm surprised were not on your list: - Kizer Catshark. Sub 2in, double detent, finger choil, and the ability to lock it open with the supplied pin - CJRB Maileah. Sub 2.5in, front flipper thumb stud combo (super fidgety), and a great reverse tanto blade profile (just for you Thomas)

I feel like the Spyderco line of small ClipiTools goes unnoticed and underappreciated. They are small 2in. slipjoint blades with a finger choil and pocket clip! They also come with one of 3 secondary blade options (scissors, cap lifter, serrated blade). I love mine to pieces, I carry it and use it every day at work.

If it's not a combo blade half serrated and a minimum of 4 inches I'm not interested in carrying it 😎👍

Germany actually has lowest restrictions, anything below 12 ㎝/ 4.72 inches either auto or locking 😂. Means virtually anything except switchblades

Dude I don’t care about knife laws, cause how often do you get frisked to see what knife on you!? Never! As long as you don’t pull it out in front of a cop or a snitch... ur good! As I’ve said before I’ll say it again.. snitches get stitches! I not an angry person but I HATE! When I’m snitched upon. So I only pull out my “illegal” knives around other knife people. An same goes with them! My best friend Alan! Sup bro!!! If you see this comment... lol but yeah he has the same beliefs! As I do..

I think an addendum with a few friction folders, traditional slipjoints might be in order. I am currently awaiting a Böker Voortrekker, and have used Higonokami and a few other traditional patterns.

I've yet to find a better knife than the S110v Ukpk, for us here in England, I really love the blade steel, and how light it is,, ps,, I've recently got the Fallkniven LTC, and I don't recommend it to anyone, the fit and finish is very poor, the blade doesn't hold an edge, and it's hard to sharpen, don't believe the hype, it's not a "super steel" imho,, it is very light however..

I can't... seriously. what are you doing in Australia!?? missing out soooo many millions of dollars in business. why? why Re so many of these knives illegal?? all the criminals ruined the world. some people just want to collect. as something to do in downtime. There's a whole world out there with much more dangerous things than knives. come on. also, we don't wanna have to do the whole paperwork bs either. my father fought in the Vietnam war. he is currently dying of dementia. I wanted to surprise him with a present for his birthday. and I couldn't get it past customs. literally crying right now... I feel this world has become a very different place in the last decade. so depressing. it has reaaaaaally saddened me . like. I can't snap out of this. we really going to these government / criminals dictate what we can and can't buy????

Stupid politicians. Stupid laws. The more free society we are, the less restrictions on what we can own or carry are. I would leave my state just on basis if my government restricted firearms carry or knives.

Man, I don’t usually bitch about restrictive knife laws but who would want to live in a world where the HoneyBee is one of the few options you can legally carry? I’m sure it’s well made but it looked like something you’d see dangling from a tween’s charm bracelet when David picked it up in his larger than average hands

People always talk about shall not be infringed as it pertains to guns, but 2A covers all arms, and knifes are the most primitive of arms. I’m glad Georgia is a state where we can carry any knife.

I have found that multi tools are the way to go when it comes to traveling. If I know the laws in the states I am going to I will pack accordingly but when I use to do regional work and traveled state to state frequently I honestly just carried a SAK or a leatherman. I would say the most worldwide accepted knife is the SAK unless they dont allow anything.

Oh product improvement idea for the nice Artisan Cutlery Araeo knife. Instead of letting that pin dangle on a lenyard why not drill a 2nd hole in the handle and leave the pin there. The lenyard is really bothersome.

My state is very vague about its knife laws it just says a basic pocket knife if you don’t a ccw but what do they consider basic is it allowed to lock or not and you can own any knife the only one that is illegal to own or sell is a ballistic knife
