Some important awareness about horshoe crabs. They are one of the oldest surviving species. They are considered living fossils and are also very important in vaccine production. Unfortunately, it's not very good for them. They are captured from wild and are their blood is harvested. The processus used to be far worse but today for the non illicit (yes those exist and they're horrible practices) the mortality rate is considered to be 15% (4%-30%) short-term. Long-term effects are vastly under studied. Good news is that there is a synthetic alternative amd it is becoming the mainstream option everywhere... except the US which is not very open to the idea. (From what I could get from the couples of articles I re-read to just to refresh my memory. Bottom line is we are harming them far too much. Blood harvesting should no longer happen at all.
