Thanks. You kept me from 'Making a Fool of Myself' discrediting 'Nickle' as being 'Magnetic'. My whole life I thought it wasn't acct it was used in making coins.....but now I know! Thanks. Surf City, Calif

Nickel is 2 protons away from iron, which is also magnetic. Cobalt, however, is *not* magnetic (even though it sits between the two).

Some white golds are alloyed with nickel. They will be slightly attracted to a magnet.

You should start a patreon page. I would gladly support you there. It would be the least I could do to say thanks. Your video on where to find C.M. Hokes book on refining for a reasonable price is one of the reasons I have subscribed to your channel. It is awesome to see you putting the methods described in that book into a modern perspective on video.

I could have made it easier for you. I have been nickel plating for a profession for 30 years. And when you fill the titanium baskets with pure nickel rounds and miss, you use a magnet to retrieve them from the bottom of the tank.

To really be thorough with this you should also do a test to prove that the coin contains no iron, which of course is also magnetic.

good point. Dissolve a few filings with AR in a spot plate then add a crystal of ammonium thiocyanate. It will turn blood red if iron is present.

I can't believe how knowledgeable you are in the field of chemistry. Do you have a chemistry background or did you teach yourself everything you know?

Self taught, and I've read C.M. Hoke's book, Refining Precious Metals Waste. That's where I got the directions to do this test.

You so know how to do the tough to find subjects of interest, at least for me. I can not tell you how many pharmacies I have asked in the past for nickel allergy testing kits as that was the only way short of a spectral gun test by my brother for me to verify nickel in meteorites and wrongs...that test turns it pink also but it is spendy...Sounds like DMG is the answer this spring if I now go hunting again. Do you know off hand if DMG would pick up on as little as 4 to 7% nickel content? Dern, now instead of going to bed I will be researching DMG, lol. Appreciate your work as always and again, Merry Christmas!

You can get DMG on eBay, but it's kind of pricey.

sreetips Thanks, I was just was looking it up and found both powder and liquid, like you said, a bit spendy and they do also use it for meteorites. Looks to be twice the price of silver per ounce...50 bucks or so, but, that beats bugging my brother on the questionables.

I got an old 2 Deutsche Mark coin which should be 25% nickel and 75% copper. It does not stick to a strong neodymium magnet. I can however measure it's magnetism with a miligram balance. It's really weak.

Excellent demonstration! I wonder, if a coin were a steel alloy with high nickel content, would the results be the same? Can the DMG test distinguish between pure nickel and steel alloy with high nickel content? I suppose a density analysis would help in this case.

I've seen 10k yellow gold that was magnetic, but it's very rate. I almost rejected a 10k yellow gold necklace once because it was magnetic. But the seller allowed me to take it to my shop and refine it, then pay him based on the actual gold yield. According to Handy and Harmon, jewelry Repairer's handbook, yellow karat gold is an alloy of gold, silver, zinc and copper.

I have a necklace that I thought was gold, but according to the JSP 10k testing solution, this necklace has nickel in it. Can you confirm putting 10k test solution on nickel turns it blue? My color was more of a teal, so I think there may be some lead or tin in it
@sreetips

Blue is copper, nickel is green, brass (alloy of copper and zinc) is teal.

In all technicality, everything is "magnetic", although iron, cobalt and nickel are the only metals ferromagnetic at room temperature (they can stay magnetised and become a magnet). Most of them can barely even be noticed. Brainiac75 has a good series on this.
