Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, human development and psychotherapy. It was invented by Richard Bander and John Grinder and called NeueroLinguistic Programming to make it sound as though it were based on science.I guess The Structure of Magic which was the name of their first two books just didn't have the ring of authenticity. It is based on the false idea that there is an intrinsic connection between neurological processes, the use of language, and behavioural patterns.NLP advocates argue that by programming our thought patterns through language, anyone can acquire the most exceptional skills. They even go as far as to claim that methods ofNLPareeffective for not only treating, but curing virtually everything from illnesses such as the common cold to learning disabilities. In other words, you can achieve the success of say, somebody like Elon Musk, simply by copying everything that he does: the language he uses, his behaviour, and his thought patterns.NLP is basically marketed as a tool for people to learn how to achieve greater success in life. The big daddy of all self-help nonsense if you will. The idea behind NLP is to take an example of a successful individual and model them in order to achieve the same results they do. Mimicking those with desirable attributes would supposedly help you acquire those same attributes. But let’s just pause for a moment to think about this: if I copy the behaviour of a neurosurgeon even down to the finest detail, does that mean I will soon be able to perform brain surgery? Of course not! If copying a billionaire will enable you to become a billionaire, none of these NLPadvocateswouldbe offering 3-day courses in NLP for a few hundred pounds per person would they? The idea that all human minds are capable of achieving the same results and that human behaviour can be programmed by methodically readjusting the mindset has no scientific basis whatsoever. The brain is not indefinitely reprogrammable and you can’t just simply download a new personality or new talents and abilities from somewhere, especially a three-day course. It almost makes me grind my teeth to dust when people start conversations with me about NLP as though they had some sort of higher psychological insight. So, in short, Neuro-Linguistic Programming is pseudoscience. It has absolutely no scientific basis and can not in any way be regarded as real psychology. No go and have a field day arguing in the comments on whether magic is real or not
