PMP lays down the principles and basics of pm. It focusses primarily on the agile way of working. But then a pm is one who has acquired the skills throughout his career through practical knowledge.

While I wouldn't go so far as to call the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification a scam, I do believe that individuals with practical knowledge, a commitment to staying updated on industry practices, and a proactive approach to learning may not necessarily require the PMP credential.

Real time project management experience is the most important factor but expecting every PM to be an SME is just asking too much.

In case, you would like to elevate to Program Management or Product Management, being a practical project manager + domain experience is good.

So this is true with any certification not only with PMP, certifications just verify your theoretical understanding of the topic but as far as PMP is concerned it checks theoretical and logical both

Thanks a lot for this session.. I am currently preparing for PMP, so I totally understand the approach. Just like psm1,2 etc... certification is good, but practical experience makes us whole... thanks for this 😊😊😊😊

Absolutely. Certification is Knowledge. Practical application is Wisdom. Try to gain both. Success will be easy.

Is Mr. Sridhar referring to Technical Project Managers rather than Project Managers when he mentions Domain Knowledge, Domain Specific Experience, or Subject Matter Experts? 8:23

First, there are flavors of Project Management. Functional, Technical, Domain Specific like Construction PM, Research PM, then Release PM, Systems Integration PM and so on. Let us look at the ladder for growth of these PMs. A technical PM can aim to be a CTO for a product development company in the future. Other hand, a function pm can aim for a CIO role in the future for non-it companies. The point is, from PM to CXO as mentioned, what is the path? For example: PM- PgM - Portfolio Manager - GM Projects - VP - CXO. Here, in the place of Pg M (Program Manager), whether one should plan for Pg M or Product Manager? Note, Product Owner is different from Product Manager. (This is a senior delivery position). So, the ladder growth is as an example: if one is planning for a product company / specific domains like FMCG, Banking as Functional growth, one should add DOMAIN EXPERIENCE to add value to his candidature. Hope, this is clarified. Wishes.

Thank you for the detailed explanation Mr.Sridhar. How should one decide between pursuing a Program Manager or Product Manager role, especially when transitioning from a PM role in a technology-driven environment to a senior delivery position? Thank you for your guidance.

Real time experience is really important and it's defineatly different from PMBOK

PMBOK is THE foundation. It is the strength of the PM. But we need to build the structure over it. Get experienced applying them and face difficulties at PM workplace, which shall be unique. We need to face them with logic & experience , which is wisdom. This is the best combination to be a Complete PM.
