When I was a young carpenter I ran a framing crew and we were framing town houses. They were bid for 11 days from start to finish with a 4 man crew and we were knocking them out in 7 days. I think we banged out like 30 of them in 7 months. We were much faster than the other crews and it was all bc we were a team and we had specific roles to fill and we did so automatically and without qualms or complaints. Production framing if done by skilled guys is a beautiful thing. If your crew is filled with hacks then the quality will be shit!!

Jarod I am not a framer I do finish and I pick and choose jobs so I am not following anyone. My dad I can remember as a as a kid maybe 8 late 60’s early 70’s my dad worked a framing crew at “ Carmel by The Sea”! I stood with him in the morning as they met up and Don ran the crew “ I don’t want to see anyone walking around”! They were framing like 4 houses at a time ! I filled nail bags as they literally came jogging up ! The nails were dipped in a wax and emptied out in a big box? Everything was driven by hand and everyone wore Levi & White T-Shirts with 8” Red Wings , Crepe souls ! Back then dad still paid $300 for those boots ! He got two re-souls out of them! I am standing in my home he built at 60 yrs old by himself a custom two story! Framing, sheeting, cut the roof, built the stairs, cabinets , installed all the doors, managed other trades, and within a yr I was living in it! From raised foundation to 2nd story top plate is almost 18’. I watched him walk it at 60 like he was 25. He is almost 90 now ? Drives, walks around , never fell, broke a bone, cut off a finger! He is built like you and was always excited about work with “ the tools” as he states. So production framing is not new just a little different? Nail guns , ect.,. Oh I kept his bags still hv them? Oxidental bags ! Great bags ! Thk u for the memory !

In the uk we very rarely build stick framing, mostly our timber frames come in panel form and some of the major companies here even send out floor pans so a standard house takes 2/3 days. It’s all about cost/time Crazy framer was probably the first framer I see on KZitem, the guy was a machine

In Phoenix, Az we got wall panels that come out pre-fab in the shop and crews are slapping these homes together in 2 days, no quality whatsoever tho. And a shortage of framing work out here too!! Because everyone is looking for the cheapest peice crew (non-licensed)

I think some of the negative assumptions about production framing come from the fact that you typically see the worst framers building track homes. Builders don't want to pay a lot, so it's typically a race to the cheapest price you'll do it for. But on the flip side, I've seen some of the best framers building track homes. It takes good framers to build a quality home in 10 days or less and make good money doing it.

I always wondered how roofslayer could guarantee that walls would be square and true to cut a whole roof. Blew my mind honestly. Then I took one of his classes at jlc. Where he builds you can’t land rafters next to ceiling joist, they have to be on top of them. So all of the rafters land on plates that are laid on top of the ceiling joists, so you have a second chance to resquare things before the roof goes in. Thought that was pretty cool. Have no clue how that works with a cathedral ceiling though. Hope I didn’t butcher that, pretty sure it’s right.

I am not framer by trade I’m a auto tech, but framing really interests me. My question to you is do you think over all it comes down to skill for good production framing? I ask that because I see so many of this videos of guys having a 3/4” gap in studs, rafters, etc because crap is incorrectly measured, but they still leave it.
@Coffmanconstruction

Yea definitely skill and knowledge, like I said, you don’t cut corners, but anticipate them. If they didn’t realize that there is an inconsistency and something isn’t perfectly straight they are working with, that is a corner they failed to anticipate, and once the problem presented itself they failed to correctly solve it

It seems to me that production framing mentality drove a lot of Americans out of the trades. Nobody wants to work at such a pace for years and years and still get paid hourly, especially for such physically demanding and dangerous work. Most framers love what they do but they also want to have a life I imagine. Also, working for a boss with this kind of mentality takes the joy out of it.

In PHX we are seeing really crappy homes, I mean we are seeing broken trusses in track homes, most everything is piece work. They are paying very little. Average carpenter here makes 60000 bucks a year average house is 650000 thousand buck. I don’t even think a lot of them are even in the country legally. The biggest home builder in the country is here just slapping homes together. I only do custom homes.
