Hello Lantern Magician!
Confused about Magic Lantern RAW and its many output options? You’re not alone! While dedicated RAW cameras like Blackmagic (BRAW & ProRes = officially not RAW due to copyright issues but nonetheless very high quality) and RED (Red RAW *they own the copyright) offer simplified options and come with professional-level documentation, they also come with a hefty price tag and are typically used by more advanced users.
In this video, I'll demystify RAW shooting, breaking down its benefits and drawbacks to help you decide when and how to use it effectively. For those without a decent computer, pre-grading in the MLV App can be a viable option. However, to truly maximize flexibility and achieve top-notch results throughout every stage of your project, CDNG is the way to go.
Whether you’re using the EOS M or another Magic Lantern-capable camera, I’ll help clarify the essentials. If you have questions or need more examples of RAW in action, drop a comment below!
Quick Cheat Sheet for RAW vs. Compressed Video
1) No Time and Weak Computer: Use 8-bit regular Canon video (not Magic Lantern) with a nice picture profile like "Neutral" or Technicolor Cinestyle. It’s a solid option for ease of use and good results without requiring extensive post-processing or high computing power.
2) Compressed Export from MLV: Formats like S-Log or ARRI Log offer a good balance of quality and file size. While they provide color grading options, they have less detail in highlights and shadows and are not as flexible for extensive adjustments.
3) CDNG (CinemaDNG): Provides ultimate control over your footage with superior detail and flexibility in post-production and matching with other raw cams like the pocket 4k. Ideal for those who want the highest quality and are ready to manage larger file sizes and more demanding workflows. Playback for editing is actually smooth due to non compression but big SSD is needed to handle the massive data and for grading the biggest GPU u can get your hands on, although there are some tricks and workarounds like pre render during a coffee break
