I like the new format!! I bet you were expecting comments like these; but I think with retro games the SNES/dreamcast era aged most gracefully. If you’ve never played consoles before the earliest 3d console I would consider touching would probably be the nintendo gamecube. Gameboy and NES probably wasn’t the best place to start in 2021, as our notions and design expectations have changed The reason for this is the length of gameplay loops. A lot of early retro games tend to have more simple short term progression loops, kind of like phone games. I really noticed this when I picked up a cheap 3ds once the system retired; all the games were new for me but I couldn’t get invested in them because they had these short loops- it was a portable system. When I was a kid I probably wouldn’t have minded (original DS)- but now a days if I’m trying new things this can actually pose a real problem. Some switch games also do this, but since the system is a hybrid- so is the library and design of the titles within said library. The switch has plenty of games obviously made for extended sittings, as well as ones that I feel would work better in bursts. Even with that aside, every console kind of has a certain library span. When a new one comes out, I consider it like a subscription service that renews every 7-8 years that allows me to play the latest exclusives on the newest hardware. But after I’ve played the big main titles of that system that I originally got it for, it will probably sit around collecting dust until a new title I’m interested in drops. Near the end of a console’s lifespan less of such titles come out, so it spends more time collecting dust. I would be mad, but combined I’ve definitely played more than 500-600 hours on my switch, its just that; spread out over many years that doesn’t even seem like all that much. I don’t need my switch to play retro games or indies; I just do that on my pc. Doing a guess on the maths, a switch alongside its games probably ended up costing me $1.3-$1.5 or so for every hour I played on it Whether that’s worth it obviously varies from person to person- and it also matters how long you can go without expanding your library (buying more full priced games will drive that number up). I would try to pick up systems based on the expected or established library-span; but if you’re not familiar with what to even try in the first place that will make it more difficult

wow what a lengthy comment, but I really agree with your point! Game design of old games are definitely different than new games! maybe im just really used to the new game design stuff, plus the lack of nostalgic attachment makes it hard to get into. I'm trying out the Super mario galaxy on an emulator and its super fun
