“There’s something romantic about putting a large AES cartridge into a NEOGEO and hooking it up to a CRT” you just nailed it right there. Old gaming on original hardware is not about convenience, it never was, it served its best when it was in its prime, now, it’s about nostalgia and reliving the experience you had in your bedroom when you were twelve. Whether it be on the SNES or Genesis and the like. It’s about getting there, through an OSSC , a Framemeister or Retrotink. Or if you prefer a CRT if you have the space for it. A quick note. If you like the idea of physical media still, the MiSTer project also has TapTo support for physical NFC cards, so you can use something physical to load games still and have a nice collection that is more managable than book size cartridges. Really simple to use, 1 tap and it boots the core and loads the game for you seemlessly. TapTo also have apps for phones so you can load them directly there or tab an NFC on the phone. Also, for computer based systems such as the Amiga, or PC 486. There is the new Cardboard Disks, again NFC based but they don't reboot or load a core, they just mount the disk image as if they were being used as real disks. Instead of loading from the NFC, these all load from disk images. Cardboard disks are designed to be made as cheap as possible with anything that you can use for a NFC, from $0.1 NFC stickers stuck to anything, even a cardboard cut out of disk, to PVC credit card size NFCs that have printed labels.

One thing i must ask, is how much of this is soley achieveable through fpga, and not emulation? Practically speaking most non console cores the mister supports have excellent options in terms of software emulation. Of course i do get the appeal of a zero lag 99.9% hardware accurate experience, but when the free option can get you 98% of the way there, is it really a must? I agree that the invesment in modding, cords, upscalers, etc is a huge turnoff, but I think it is worth it for some especially those with large media collections already. Sometimes its fun to keep the old hardware chugging along, just for novelty. There are, of course, more obscure systems that can be a bit clunky to set up emulation for and havent had any FPGA work and sometimes still easier to play the real thing if you have access to it. My initial answer to this question is absolutely not but, even as a hardcore physical collector, I can see the arguments from both sides. I think of it this way: I have easily over 1000 physical games, both dirt cheap and eye wateringly expensive, in my personal library and at least 30 types of consoles, both home and portable, that I own and play all the time either on my CRT or through the RetroTink4K on my flat panels. With that being said, I also have a mini office PC I salvaged from work that I modified to run Batocera for emulation as well as two everdrives, one for the Sega Genesis and one for the N64, and a Satiator for the Sega Saturn. I love my Batocera box as it lets me play stuff that I don't own and may likely never have an opportunity to own. Its my go-to device if I want to play most arcade titles that are hard to find or hard to use in the home, the Virtual Boy and other games from consoles I own but can't get the game for yet or ever. Playing Clock Tower or the Misadventures or Tron Bon for the PS1 thru Batocera beats spending several hundreds of dollars for the real thoing sometimes lol. It's also a great way to play light gun games that don't have console releases so long as you have the right guns to use with it. My everdrives, while certainly useful, have been seeing less use since I feel better using real carts when I play on real hardware or just simply using Batocera. The Satiator is different though since Saturn games are so expensive it makes sense to have SOMETHING to play on original hardware this way. Saturn, while greatly improved, doesn't have great emulation at times so playing on original hardware is still my preference. While I don't think I'll ever use a Mister since my Batocera box is good enough for what I need out of it, I can definitely see its appeal just like I do with my Batocera box; an all-in-one one-stop-shop device with great compatibility. For the average joe looking to just play the games and nothing more or someone looking for convenience it is a no brainer purchase. For people like me, it's not just about playing the game. It's also about the thrill of the hunt, the satisfaction of finally owning that one title you've always craved and the beauty of seeing it on your shelf ready to be played at any given time. Seeing its artwork, the design of the manuals if applicable, the spine sitting on your shelf, it's all euphoric in a weird way. It's not a hobby I can recommend to everyone, but it's a hobby I enjoy every aspect of.

Emulation has been the way for me for many years, Saturn being the final hold out since it was a bit of a pain to emulate for a while. Totally agree on not missing burning CD's to see if you liked a game, that was definitely NOT it. Still want to get my hands on a MisterPi, been waiting on a restock. Great video as always.

Total = $170 but you can take off $15 to not have a zapper like you would with an LCD TV BUT... $35 for CRT TV which I didn't have prior to the NES AND $45 for a used RetroTink 2x Pro I'm not including the controllers... In all, ~$210 to play one game system and all games that my Analogue Pocket and Dock could play. I did get a real good deal on the console itself so for many, it will cost much more. Granted, an AP and Dock is ~$400 and almost the cost of a Mister at the time but at the time it was harder to get either. I love my real NES, it is what I had as a kid but unless a cheap retro system drops in my lap, I will most likely get a Mister Pi when possible.

And fuck Nintendo for branding us as pirates, because obviously refusing to turn your house into a museum means using roms... oh wait they're doing the same thing with their own museum. But lately, I’ve realized I’m spending more time tweaking settings and troubleshooting ,installing updates etc on MiSTer than actually playing games. Now that I’m older, I don’t have the time or energy for that nonsense. FPGA devices from Analogue seem like a superior option, but they don’t support things like arcade games or NeoGeo. No! And I will tell you for why - the very meaning of these games and consoles is tied to their physical context and form. For me, without using OG hardware is missing soul. The drawbacks are part of the attraction, and not in a meaningless way but in a real tactile sense that is a reaction to the digital only world of throwaway games. And they are only drawbacks when viewed through modern perspective. The act of booting my PS1 with a CD is part of the being of the console itself, without the body there is no soul. My PS1 physical disc collection , with their cool artwork, boxes and detailed and colourful manuals are a testament to the time and positive spirit of the era - not throwaway digital gaming! It's not just abou the act of playing the games, and it never was. Even from when we first played these games as kids, opening the cases, looking at the artwork, etc etc, was part of the interest.

Retro game developers developed games to be experienced on specific hardware, with specific controllers and specific accessories. To get the authentic experience of playing "True Crime: Streets of LA" on the Nintendo GameCube for example, you need to play it on a GameCube, ideally plugged into a CRT TV. Trying to emulate it will result in either a faster or slower frame-rate, faster or slower loading times and your controller will not match the unique GameCube layout. Plus modern screens are nowhere near as good as original CRT TVs. Just get the original hardware. It's not expensive and it's a no brainer.

No, Mister is NOT a replacement for real hardware because you can't find the new DE-10 Nano clones due to them always being sold out! I started collecting video games way before it was cool and got most of what I have extremely cheap and have several CRTs, plus I have several capable PCs that can emulate all the way up to PS3 to fill in what I don't already have or enhance what I do have. Not to mention play arcades. The FPGA scene is just a huge tease with people professing that it only costs a little over $200 to get setup when it's actually double that after you have to pay some jerk on eBay nearly $500 for a pre-built one. Then there's Analog with the same nonsense along with being the Limited Run of the FPGA world by taking your money months before you ever see what you paid for in your hand. Meanwhile you can easily attain a cheap PC or Raspberry Pi for MSRP. Yeah $500 for a mister is still way cheaper than buying all the real hardware with their respective flash devices by a long shot. However that doesn't mean I'm willing to be ripped off. Until this FPGA nonsense stops and becomes widely available for the right price I will continue to use PC for playing games that I don't have.

For the games not on the mini/classic consoles I have, I’ll use Analogue Pocket OpenFPGA before investing hundreds, if not thousands on original hardware and software. Fifth generation support is getting close though I can probably make a case for still using modded OEM hardware with ODEs/flash carts. Support for sixth generation and beyond is practically non-existent and probably won’t be this decade. I prefer the feel and weight of (modded) OEM handhelds which can’t be replicated on any other retro handheld. Programming a computer to play NES or Genesis games (or whatever) is just not the same as playing on original hardware, on a CRT. Sure, if someone doesn't want to buy a PC Engine Duo-RX or Neo-Geo and mod it, etc. then emulation is better. MiSTer has replaced all the systems it plays for me. As long as there's no FPGA Dreamcast I'll continue using original hardware for that with an ODE. Anything more recent (but still retro) I play on emulators. I feel that anything from PS2 on benefits so much from being able to run games in widescreen and with higher resolutions that I wouldn't be interested in an FPGA option to be honest

PS2 on will always benefit from software emulation and IMO FPGA cores for those systems don’t really bring anything fundamental to the table

Collectors are always going to covet the original hardware, for everybody else fpga is the future.

I prefer og hardware. Mainly because it's the original thing, it's the real deal, and there are plenty of mods to improve original hardware with RGB and HDMI mods to improve video and sound quality, Custom Firmware, Flashcarts, ODE's. Another thing is FPGA's cannot run everything. It's peaking at N64 at the moment, no Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Xbox, Wii, PSP, DS, 3DS etc as of yet and then there are the false promises in the FPGA community with Vapour Ware products. And i'm not sure if we'll see these systems running on an affordable FPGA anytime soon. And the level of reverse engineering these is going to be a whole another task itself. I mainly like Emulation and FPGA'S for 4K scaling, portability, and the Arcade hardware. Collecting Arcade Hardware is a whole other world.

@@VideoGameEsotericaI love the portability of emulation and FPGA'S especially the Mister, Aya Neo, Steam Deck, Rog Ally, Raspberry Pi, the Anbernics, Ayn Odin's, Miyo Mini's and the Analogue Pocket aswell as being able to play Arcade games on these. You can just slip it into a bag and take it anywhere. Especially if you're moving around. Compared to a collection of OG Hardware that you would have to either sell or put into storage. Another thing is being able to play retro games on the go. Portabilising an actual console is a hell no for me. Perhaps I might consider building a Wii Ashida Portable kit, if I become crazy enough to try and make one. But all in all, it isn't practical at all. This is where emulation whether it's FPGA or not really shines. Ease of use, portable, compact, takes up little to no space, 4K scaling, Arcade gaming, affordable, various controllers.

Yes just throwing a MiSTer in your bag and going to a friends house is insanely easy

i dont know man....alll my home...for real is full of handhelds and retro consoles modded also with everdrives etc etc etc....but i never use them any more with the fpga and retro emulation/pc handhelds that i have now......they just collect dust

Pretty much, there is no need to have original hardware anymore in my opinion.

6th and and beyond will probably never show up on any fpga system. Cores would take to long to develop and the cost would be the same as a good pc probably.

If you've got any mint condition then keep what you can afford to and sell them when you're 70/80. Don't think it'll be worth it to keep a scuffed up console with no box.
