Awesome review. I am an owner of japanese Metroline 5 string and the reason I am staying with Sadowsky can be heard at around 14:30 mark where there is a clear inconsitency between E and rest of the strings on the Ultra. I had that issue with B strings mostly on various basses (Xotic, MTD, Lakland...) but not with my Sadowsky MV5. Really considering getting a Warwick made metro express as a backup after this review (I´ve seen several other reviews already), so thanks :)

Hey Chris. I just watched this whole video again. The content is so good. Thanks Chuck for your reviews as well. IMO ~ I wouldn't be a fan of changing the pickups to EMG. I know you're an EMG fan. Just for the simple fact that... The pickups are the voice. If you change the voice that you already like. Then you don't have that voice anymore. It would be worth the experiment to see what the difference would be. But I feel the preamp just accentuates the voice of the pickups. Here again. It's just my opinion. If you like EMG voicing. Then you'll like the voicing from the preamp. Hope that makes sense. Keep Rockin man 🎸✌️😎🤟🎸

This was bizarre. The comparison between the Ultra and Sadowsky was basically invalid given the bizarre preamp settings you were using. The only thing you can say for sure is that the Fender is more dynamic (which, for your tastes, was a bad thing). I did like you calling out Fender's useless labelling of their Ultra Noiseless P bass pickup though! 😂 The Sadowsky/Player Plus comparison was better, as you actually went into some spec-by-spec comparisons. However, although you showed a picture around 9:45, you didn't mention the hidden fret ends on the Sadowsky. This is a great feature that should make the neck more comfortable to play regardless of the humidity conditions as it should make fret sprout a non-issue. Ever more so with a roasted neck. I thought the best part by far was the gig evaluation. It was nice to get an overall comparison of everything in your working environment. I've never played a Sadowsky, but I do own an Ultra and a Pro II Precision, both of which I bought used, which is the way to go if you can in my opinion.

It does make it difficult to assess the character of the bass, and I think it amplifies the drawbacks of the Metro's tone. (But I guess it also demonstrates that the Fender Ultra preamp is more useful through its entire range in terms of tone-shaping and listenability.) DISCLAIMER: I do crank the two band EQ on my Spector on occasion to cut through a heavy mix, but it growls instead of twangs. I assume other Spector and Spector-Shaped Object (Warwick) players do the same? Can't go higher than 6 or 7 on the treble boost without using distortion, though, because the thing will start picking up some alien kid playing on his cell phone three galaxies away.)

I have two newer US Fenders, a custom shop Jazz and an American Performer Mustang. I might have gotten really lucky, because mine are perfection. That said, there are a lot of makes out there with instruments under $800 that could be argued are just as good. I have no doubt a Sadowsky is nice, and I'd probably look at one before a non-US/Japanese Fender model. I feel like the MX models are pretty overpriced now, in most cases. I'd just like to add, while listening to you comment on the finish on a Squier, the feel of the neck and even body finish on a US Fender somehow feels more... luxurious? Silky? I don't know precisely why, but just higher quality paints and clear coats, I imagine. A Squier as an instrument might function just as well as a higher end model, but there is definitely a higher quality "feel" you can't see on video or in photos. I actually like Squier more than Fender MX based on my experience with several different models.

Not dominant sound while playing rock music. Price is not fit in a quality. That's why I bought another bass guitar.. I's a fender modern jazz bass V. it's thick punchy and monster sound. I agree with that, but apparently they sell the VTC module that is relatively easy to add to your onboard controls. They absolutely should have included it, because there should be SOME way of taming the highs out of the box. But I guess that’s one way that they keep the price down.

I was really hoping to be impressed with the Sadowsky. But, (to my ears anyway) it sounds harsh and thin compared to the Fenders. It lacks warmth, especially on the D and G strings. Thanks for the transparency in showcasing these basses. For the money (and as long as you're not bent on active electronics), the Squier is the easy choice. You could buy 2 Classic Vibe basses for less than that Sadowsky.

I just bought a Sadowsky Metro Express Jazz, it's a brilliant bass. Not better, just a different sound signature. I played it yesterday on a gig and every guy in my band and the band after us was raving about the sound.

Compared to his, doesn’t it look so different? Chinese has rsd logo (no sadowsky) and a straight serial number on the back (not curved) and a gap between the fingerboard and the pick guard (unlike his in the video)

Muy bueno el video, pero a mi criterio no esta muy clara la diferencia, si tocas solamente con pua... falto un poco de dedos para apreciar bien el tono de cada uno, falto un poco de Slap para apreciar el ataque de cada uno.

They are different, not which one is better than the other. The best way is to have them both.

I’ve owned both. Nothing records and sits in the mix like a Sadowsky.

closing my eyes when u play them idk I like the Fender sound but something about the Sadowsky is just like.. adding butter on bread just make sit a little better. If I could get a hold of that pre amp and pick up Id be a happy man lol

Great comparison. I really like this type of head-to-head-to-head for the comparable instruments.

I can hear the Sadowsky comes with stainless steel strings. The comparison is kinda scuffed because of that. Sounds good though. If there was an American made Sadowsky for American Fender money I would consider it. My main complaint with Fenders is the archaic 7,25" or 9,5" radius. The Ultra Jazz might be my next buy because of that. I am done buying "high end" Chinese and Indonesian instruments. They finish the instruments well but they can't build something with even frets to save their lives. Life is too short.

very interesting comparison, the sadowsky preamp is wonderful sounding! i really wish you wouldve used the blend control tho, especially the fenders. with noisless pickups the blend knob can really open up a bass in the mids which was probably why the fenders didnt sound right, using mostly neck pickup with the j on just a little to tighten things up and add some sparkle wouldve probably changed everything

Every brand should want honest feedback so that they can innovate and compete in the market. What a great real-world eval from a dude working in the trenches. I am a Squire fan and now, even more of a Sadowski fan!

This video is just what I needed, I’m trying to decide between 2 used basses on fb marketplace right now, the fender player plus and the sadowsky metroexpress JJ. So this was super helpful. One thing though, so many times throughout the video you said “this one” or “this bass” and it wasn’t immediately obvious which bass you were talking about. Would’ve been better if you referred to the basses by name.

As far as dynamics, the Fender Ultra let you know that you are spiking in your technique. It has more headroom indeed. It's like the first time I plugged into a tube amp and realized how inconsistent I was and how much more dynamic control I had with my picking or plucking hand. I realized how much I sucked and it was eye opening. I play nothing but vintage tube amps now for that dynamic control....and don't get me started on being put on a compressor from FOH! If you have awareness of dynamic control, then you don't need a compressor...(fighting words I know, but I stand my ground) Anyway, thanx 4 the in depth dive and time spent on this, much appreciated. Peace & Love - K

100% agreed. Musicality is partly in the control of the dynamics.
