Thank you for this! It seemed counterintuitive to put my dragon in substrate that isn’t more natural for them. I saw a dragon with pet carpet once and their nails were constantly getting stuck in it. I felt so bad for that dragon.

If anyone wants to use sand use a sand made out of crushed plants such as walnut sand which is what I use. Side comment if they eat it they will not get hurt because it is crushed plants that they are eating. I got my crushed walnut sand from petsmart.

Shannon Searcy every month I wash the sand in a large tub and dry it before putting back in the enclosure. It helps to remove any build up of fine material that the sand sieve doesn’t pick up. Every 3 months I will replace all the sand with fresh sand.

I’m a little concerned, because today we got a new terrarium for our beardie, and we wanted to change the substrate to sand, because her claws were constantly getting caught on the carpet she had prior. The type of sand we used for her new home is the Desert White Reptisand from from Zoo Med. Is this safe for her? (She’s an adult beardie, just to keep in mind.)

@CookiesCritters

85 degrees F (29*C) is way too low. They should have a basking spot at 107-113*F (42-45*C). Anything below 97*F (36*C) their digestion and appetite decreases. Just because an animal has survived for 4 years doesn’t mean that it is thriving. Am I right to assume that your beardie doesn’t eat much and doesn’t frequently go to the toilet.

That seems to be the problem in places like America where anyone can just go buy one from a pet shop. So many neglected beardies over there it seems. In Australia we need a Basic Wildlife License to own bearded dragons, which stops impulse buys from scum bag pet stores churning out dragons like M&M's.

sand mimics their natural habitat. It allows them to display natural behaviour such as digging and burrowing. If your beardie is healthy and has the appropriate lighting and heating, sand is perfectly safe. Even if the dragon ingests some they will pass it out.

Some dragons will just lick the sand to sense their environment. It is perfectly normal behaviour. Some dragons are just clumsy eaters. They will eat mouthfuls of sand trying to eat a bug. Washed play sand is perfectly safe for healthy dragons. 👍

@CookiesCritters

@@charlenemock7397 I personally wouldn’t use kitty litter. The crystal type could be toxic if ingested. The recycled paper type could cause a intestinal impaction if ingested. You could always try using a sand box to potty train. Washed play sand is the safest substrate if ingested.

Is reptisand good?
@CookiesCritters
4 жыл бұрын
Sprite Cranberry I have not personally used the ZooMed reptisand so I won’t be able to make a recommendation either way with their product. A good test to see is the sand is safe is to wet it and see if it clumps together and looks “gluey”. I personally wouldn’t use any reptile branded sand from the cost factor let alone the risk of high calcium content in some of them. Washed play sand from a hardware store is much cheaper and safer in my opinion. Washed play sand allows a dragon to exhibit all their natural behaviours while being safe for them. Just remember that bearded dragons need a basking point of 38-40 degrees Celsius to metabolise their food and pass out any sand ingested.
@caithlynstas
4 жыл бұрын
Cookie’s Critters it isn’t to gluey or clumpy it isn’t wet and she loves to dig she eats out of her bowl and I hand feed and with tongs give her insects her basking spot is always 39-40 degrees Celsius the sand is super fine and has no dye in it I don’t have the packaging from the sand I lost it so I don’t know the brand
@CookiesCritters
4 жыл бұрын
Sprite Cranberry the reason why I asked what the sand is like when it gets wet, is when your dragon inadvertently ingests some sand it’s good to know how it will react in their stomach as the sand will be wet then. Some companies don’t use dyes in their sand but they do add calcium which can make it dangerous. Washed play sand is the safest product to use and will still allow your dragon to dig. How long have you had this sand in their enclosure?
@caithlynstas
4 жыл бұрын
Cookie’s Critters the sand never really gotten wet so I don’t really know I never spill or anything I’ve had the sand in for five months
@CookiesCritters
4 жыл бұрын
Sprite Cranberry 👍 I understand that the sand in the enclosure is dry. My concern with sand other than washed play sand is that your dragons throat, stomach and intestines are all wet organs. Like I said above, when your dragon accidentally eats some sand, which they do, some reptile branded sands will stick to the internal organs of the dragons. Washed play sand doesn’t do this. I replace my substrate every 6 months. Considering that yours is 5 months old now, In a months time I would replace it with washed play sand.
