Thank you all for your comments! I feel I need to address why this video has paper from different brands. This started mostly as a comparison for me, (with a limited budget), to see how the papers I already had were different. Maybe someday (if/when I have the budget for it) I'll be able to make another video with papers all from the same brand, but for now I apologize to all of you who came here expecting that. Thank you again for watching!!

It would have been better to give a review on the same product but different weights to make your point about whether 300lb is worth it. Arches 300lb is amazing but this review makes it seem as if Arches is not good quality. It is. Many would say it is absolutely the best. I also use Arches 140lb and that is excellent too. Saunders Waterford is excellent but how would it had fared in your review if you had tested Saunders Waterford 90lb. 🤷♀️🙂

I wish you had done a review on different papers but same weight. Because of course heavier weight is going to be better.

I accidentally bought a block of Arches (640lb) & it can take lots of water & no need to tape it down after wetting!

I'm disappointed that all three weren't the same brand. I use Arches 140lb, and I really wanted to see if the 300lb was worth moving up to.

Very hard to hear you with the music so loud. It would be nice just to have your voice without the music. Thank you for posting this video, good information.

I only found you last month & enjoy your videos. Plus you have a soothing voice which doesn't hurt in these chaotic times. 😏 This video was good because it shows the problem with pooling etc on lighter weight papers, etc. But I have to saw making it a weight comparison, but then using different brands of paper for each one really skews the results., Because some of what's happening is the brand, the company's process, materials & sizing. Just a thought. I don't know if it will help anyone else trying to decide on what they like to work with, but some art companies like Cheap Joe's have paper sample kits they sell, with like sheets of several different brands & weights in a packet so you can get a feel for different papers, weights & cold, hot & rough press without buying entire pads & blocks. Thank you so much. Keep 'em coming! 👏🤗

Thank you-I'm glad you've enjoyed them! I agree, and thanks for recommending the paper sample kits, I'll have to take a look at them! I'm currently working on a comparison between different brands of hotpress paper, and this time I made sure to get them all in the same weight and type of press. Thanks again! I appreciate the encouragement =)

Thanks for this! I bought arches 300gsm, thinking it was 300lb and was wondering why the hell I was getting buckling. I just realised my mistake and will keep the arches for experiment/practice because I really wasn't blown away by it as a new watercolor artist. The price is way too much also, whereas Saunders Waterford is much more affordable so I will have to try their 300 LB paper and see the difference.

You can see by looking at the last one how the lower weight papers got in the way of your intentions.

I'm glad it was helpful! I used Arches 140lb for a long time, but have not regretted switching from it. I hope you find a paper that works for you-keep painting! ^_^

Thank you for this video. I’m new to watercolor and info was a big help. Do i need to stretch 300 pound Arches watercolor paper? It was the thickest paper i could find. Thanks.

You're welcome - I'm glad the video was helpful! 300 pound watercolor paper is thick enough that it should not need to be stretched. It's also thick enough that you could probably get by with just painting on it, especially if the paper is cut very small, but I like to use some sort of board (1/8" hardboard panels are my favorite) and masking tape to tape down the edges of the paper (half on the board, half on the paper). This keeps the paper from moving around while you're painting, and gives a nice finished edge. Thanks for your comment! =)

Thank you so much for the wonderful demo! I just got some Saunders 300lb ( it’s the same price as arches 140lb where I am!). May I ask, is it hard / difficult to adjust using heavy paper? I tried a little and it seems different! I’m new to watercolour to begin with so I’m just unsure. Thank you so much again

You're welcome-thank you for taking the time to watch it and comment! Hmm... I've found that it always takes some time painting with a new paper to learn how it reacts, which can be difficult at first. After practicing, though, instinct/muscle memory kick in and it gets easier and easier to use the right amount of paint and water for the paper. I think it may be less difficult with heavier paper since there's a good chance it will be more forgiving. I hope this helps. Thanks again, and keep painting! ^_^

I just saw this comment and wanted to add that there’s ABSOLUTELY a learning curve when switching papers. It’s most notable when you start with student grade pulp paper and then make the jump to 100% cotton. You have to relearn water control, bcuz you need so much more on cotton, but there’s a fine line of too much & not enough. The best practice paper I’ve found, after trying too many to count is fabriano studio that has 25% cotton. It’s super affordable costing less than $25 for 50 sheets and it has a lot of the same characteristics as my arches 140lb paper.
