In this video, we discuss what secular, secularization, secularism and secularity mean and what they entail. Debates around the compatibility and incompatibility of secularism and Islam are raging these days. So I decided to intervene and give you a scholarly perspective on this issue.

In my understanding, the sense in which you need to examine compatibility of Secularism with Islam is not "here and now" (as gleaned by strict Latin roots) but rather "Separation of State and Church" as per current usage defined by George Jacob Holyoake (1851); considered to be father of Secularism. Hence Secularism is simply absence of Religion in public legislation and governance. This Secularism has no conflict with Religion (or Islam) as is evident from the fact that there are millions of Muslims living good lives in Secular states in west.
@_titanslayer_
16 күн бұрын
Secularism doesn’t mean hear and now. That’s the meaning of the word “secular” The meaning of secularism is “the deliverance of man from his religious and metaphysical control of his reason and language”. (Cox & Attas) It has 3 dimensions. One is the desecralizarion of politics which argues that “no sacred authority will be consisted in political domain” which goes against the Islamic perspective of politics where the ruler (sultanate) has to implement Sharia and forbid evil (evil and sharia are all deeply religious and sacred concepts). Lastly, Muslims living in the secular states does not say anything about what Islam has to say. We can’t collapse people’s experience with doctrines of Islam. And this idea that Muslims enjoy lives in the west is also contestable. P.S The reconfiguration of politics as “separate” from religion is also a modern making. As Taylor argues that in the Religius Age, God was everyone and such a neat and clean separation does not exist prior to the emergence of the Secular Age. So this separation that you have conceived between religion and public sphere is a modern reconfiguration and construction which is only self-attesting and has no reference outside of its own doctrines.

@@_titanslayer_ You are using Secularism more in the sense of Atheism which it is not! Would do well to also read "The Principles of Secularism" by Holyoake. Further Secularism is only practically successful way one can go about governance in a modern (and not medieval) society where citizens practicing many religions cohabit together. As citizens are free to practice their religion in their private (and to some degree community) life no great conflict is envisaged there. BTW do you have any alternate solution for such situations? Hence at a 'strict theoretical' level Islam might have some incompatibility with Secularism, but not at 'practical' level. Separation of Politics from Religion is not new too; for instance there were Jew prime ministers and commanders in Caliphate of Cordova during Golden Age. Same situation can be noticed during Mughal Rule wherein Hindus occupied high positions and were not forced to pay Jiziya for most of the time. And yes, I would contest your skepticism about Muslims not enjoying their lives in secular western societies because arguably, I do not see many of them returning to their homelands. On the contrary we see long queues of Muslim visa seekers in front of Embassies of these countries in Muslim majority states.

@@deepsareen1The very act of reconstructing every religion and reduce it to the private spehere is itself a theological claim which a secular state authoritatively do. Secondly you claimed that secularism is the only successful (peaceful) mode of governance, which is completely wrong. Secularism after dethroning god claimed the authority and sets to mould identities for it's citizen. Secular state creates it's own subject and not the other way around. Secularism is what gives rise to nationalism and modern nation state which has plunged humanity in worst of disasters. Your understanding is shallow because you took the state constructed identity for granted. Lastly, the example of Andalusia and Mughal india is not at all relevant, because first of all you will have to prove that appointment of non-muslim viziers is something equivalent to secularism. You seems to have the generic textbook understanding of secularism as the good ayy toleration of all beliefs. Another thing is the Muslims in the west are not there because they are content with secularism but because of economic incentives.

Despite secularism is highly promoted non religious activities, secularism is also socio_politico_ economic system. No doubt It his values, ethics and understanding of life but this is called ideology not a religion.

Because religion according to majority of Muslims understanding is Deen i.e system, parameter to judge which is used numerous times in the Quran for eg in surah Yusuf when Yusuf AS said to his family that this is the Deen here in Egypt (he was referring to it as system, law of Egypt) . Secondly in surah fatiha we say Maliki youmid Deen ( the owner, Malik of Day of Judgement ). on that day by using which system Allah will judge us ? Islam (Quran and Sunnah) because he have us a parameter for judgement One of the names of Quran is also Al furqan ( a thing which does faraq i.e separates things and separation, differentiating here means in the form of evil and good) These are only some of the references I have in my head currently it is mentioned numerous times in different ways as a system, parameter to judge So , Islam being considered as a Deen( system and parameter to judge) is the authentic understanding of Islam going back to the companions of Prophet PBUH. Now my brother you mentioned that secularism is a socio economic political system,so, it is regarded as a Deen (system) . No two systems can exist for the same people at the same time. I, you or anybody cannot be subject to two or more systems at a time. Otherwise , if anyone wants to proof me wrong then I request that guy/woman whoever it might be to give any successful nation whose people at the same time are subject to two kinds of different systems or laws. Yes, it can happen that two systems, laws exist in an area for eg one for one community and another for another community or group but here different individuals are subject to different laws not two laws of the same nature eg one law says whoever is rich he must give 50k and whoever is poor must give 5K these are 2 separate law 5K one for poor ane 50K one for rich. Now if someone says whoever is poor in Area ABC must give 5K according to one law for Sales tax on consumer goods. And another law of the same area says whoever is poor must give 50K for Sales tax on consumer goods. then the two laws are contradictory in nature these two laws are representating two different systems or laws applied to the same individual i.e poor. In this manner, no society can progress as there will always be uncertainity chaos .. Therefore, secularism if only is an ideology ,then , it would considered a way of beliefs, customs and traditions .But if the ideology propogates any form of system indicating certain laws whether it be economic, legal laws then it is a religion (deen i.e system, parameter to judge,law).
