My first week as a nurse, I was on the dementia unit (had been there as a CNA for a year while in school, so I knew the folks well), we had a retired brain surgeon who would go into Dr mode off and on...one day I'm giving his meds and he looked at me very serious and asked me "Do you know the difference between an oral and a rectal thermometer??" I said yes, color of the tip" He looked dead into my eyes and said " THE TASTE!!!" I never laughed so hard in my life. I miss those folks so much.

I was a CNA for 11 years. Did home health, sat privately with a patient, CNA at a nursing home, CNA in a hospital, and as of December a nurse. If there is anything I’ve learned having been a CNA all those years is that we are all on the same team, fighting the same battle. Teamwork and appreciation is so important. I let the CNA assigned to my patients know regularly how much I appreciate them. I let always joke with them that I know I can be a pain in the ass always asking them to do stuff to help me, but they are so understanding and helpful. Many of them whom I worked along side when I was a CNA. I think the secret is, as I said above, telling them I appreciate them. Truly. Some of my worst nights I would’ve never gotten through if it weren’t for an amazing CNA. PS; HELL YEAH they need to get paid more!!!!!

I'm a professional patient, not a health care worker, so I'm not emotionally invested in what goes on in the hospital. But first time patients generally have NO idea who anyone is or what the hell is going on! Since there is no assigned uniform or it is not explained who does what patient will ask any person that comes in( housekeeping,PT,x-ray tech, dietitian) for pain meds or can you look at me IV. Patients don't know who anyone is and most don't know what CNA is. The power struggle is internal to the hospital. Everyone truly knows that doctors don't know what the fudge is going on and that nurses are running the case and that CNAs are litterly sent by God! These people on here saying mean things work in hospitals that only care about the bottom line with teams that are disgruntled and or unhappy and with people with low self esteem. There is not point in arguing with or insulating people that have an unhappy life.
