I think a part of the joy in rogue likes is that you have to find a path with the hand you’re dealt. I’ve been playing a bit of Balatro and it stretches the types of hands you play and strategies you employ, which brings new skills that you wouldn’t have employed otherwise. Plus, Balatro gives you the seed you were on, so if you want to give the same run another try, you can

Getting creative with the RNG you're dealt is fun and core to Roguelikes, I agree. It's also very skill-expressive, since you need to understand different abilities and anticipate how they will pair even if they aren't an optimal arrangement. It encourages you to think of combinations that otherwise might not cross your mind. That said, I think the first piece of RNG in a roguelike is tricky. What happens often in both Gunfire Reborn and Ravenswatch is that if the player doesn't get the RNG they want, they immediately restart. This would probably happen less frequently if the starting talent or attribute wasn't so run-defining for both games. Giving the player the seed for the map so you can retry it seems like something that might happen down the road. This tends to be particularly good for speedrunning, and a meta will likely spring up around it. I'm personally less a fan of repeating the same seed since that moves some of the burden on the player from thinking to remembering, but I wouldn't mind seeing it as an option in the game.

its been pretty well solidified in the roguelike genre , that 3 is the correct number of talents/perks/items to choose between when getting an upgrade or level up. making the number of choices you get 3 instead of 2 will mostly solve this problem, there are only 5 or 6 starting talents per character, so if you have a particular talent you want getting 3 options means you get at least a 50% chance to get the one you want.

It looks like Passtech went all the way and added a reroll system and free-pick for the first talent. For items, the game gives three options, but for talents it's still 2 for regular picks. I think that's fine, given that the talent pool is smaller than say, the boon pool in Hades, and the rerolls cover other cases

They added ways of choosing the starting path and also gave a lot of features to customize your experience in CotDG, hence I think we will have more options later. Given that they are also adding even more talents (even though those seems more like the ''final'' talents you get at the end of the run), we will definitely need more consistency, therefore I believe we will at least get 1 additional choice during talent selection. Overall, the more a game adds features for players to tailor their experience, the more it is enjoyable and praised by the community, but it takes time and development which equals money, so it's not always easy to come by.

That's great perspective! As someone who hasn't experienced CotDG, I haven't really thought about looking at parallels between those two development processes. Also good points about development time, there are tons of little features that will come eventually, but it's tricky for the developer to manage all of them

I think allowing just the starting talent to be selected and then the rest of them are the normal process isn't going to fundamentally change the game or make it any worse. Right now we just reset the game anyway when we don't get a starting talent we want to play. This is more of a QoL feature to allow picking a starting talent given that many people currently already are restarting the game when they don't get the one they want.

As someone who restarts a lot to get a different starting talent, I guess I'm a little more sensitive to the inconvenience, though I imagine it's more annoying with groups where several starting talents need to come together at the same time. Good point that this might not be as big of a deal for a lot of players

I think with the new update coming we will get to choose our starting talent.

That's correct, starting talents will be free pick with the Avalon launch 👍

I think just choosing the starting ability before the run starts would be nice. Keep the level 1 choice as well so, as of right now, we'd get 7 standard talents to choose from, instead of the current 6. Sometimes it feels like a build is just one talent away from being amazing. But I'm also completely fine with how the game works right now. Each roguelike handles this differently. For example, Wizard of Legend is on the other extreme end of this spectrum, letting you choose your robe (general stats), 4 different starting abilities (among dozens), a starting relic (among hundreds), as well as a couple other, smaller factors, while still having loot throughout the run that affects how you play. This allows you to theory craft quite a lot of different builds, and kind of gives you the ability to set it in the right direction from the start. That being said, it's a much different game, and if Ravenswatch did this, I don't know how I would feel about it.

I do wonder if adding another talent would end up making a hero too strong for the current difficulty. I guess another angle is that the starting talent is packaged and feels like any other talent, and the more distinctive we make it, the more potentially confusing it makes the game for someone brand new (this talent is selected in the menu, but that all the rest are selected in game). One option is to break those completely out of talents, and give them another name/packaging, more like loadouts or skills or something (kind of like a Risk of Rain character loadout). But that adds a lot of development and effort to the game, fixing something that's not technically broken. Like you mentioned, I think a lot of the beauty of the game is the random roll, which makes you as a player have to be well-rounded enough to get value with a lot of different talents, and make the best of a situation. There's a lot of good stories that we only get to create because the game gives us something we wouldn't have chosen ourselves. If they did add a lot of player-agency, runs would be much more predictable, and not in a good way.

I would pref to have 2 modes where u can chose also level up talents out of all that exsist and 1 mode where it is like it is now

I think the mode you're describing sounds a lot like artifact of command in Risk of Rain 2 (dunno if you're familiar with that game, but let me know if that's a fair characterization). I personally enjoy AoC less than the default game, but it's pretty popular in the RoR2 community. I bet a lot of players would really enjoy something similar in Ravenswatch!
