I think he is great. Had a great performance last night in episode 6 and had the best one out of anyone in episode 5. But I think he, more than any actor on the show, has his blindspots. So for me much of his work in episode 3 and his kerry scene in episode 4 don't hit home.

Agreed. He is so different in this season than any other one. He is usually so jokey and never serious but since Logan died he has been so solemn and also so nice to his siblings. In the past he has been so shorty to Kendall and Shiv and he’s they’re working together so the dynamic has changed but even so he has really changed as a character and I love it.

Couldn't disagree more about the acting in this season, especially about Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong in ep 3. It seems your metric for judging their performances is "would a real person say this in this situation," and that's down to the writing and direction, not the actors. With regard to the writing, which I also have to say is excellent, these characters are exaggerations of real life, and still the actors manage to sell them every time. I found myself drawn right in to their pain and confusion. Succession continues to be about as close to perfect as a TV show can be.

10:55 You state why I enjoy Tom and Greg this season. Tom is like a tired dog after his power was suddenly revoked from him. He doesn't really belong in this space of people, and his 'competence' turns out to be nothing but loyalty to Logan. His play at the end of season 3 turned out to only work if Logan was invincible: and of course, he's not. As for Greg, notice how he just continues to stay close to power. He's being looped in by Kendall, is implied to have met people at the Norweigian retreat, and speaks more confidently and aptly. Despite being under the radar and openly mocked, he still has the skill he's always had to stay afloat. I'd argue the season would be a lot more boring if Tom and Greg were just Logan's thugs throughout it. Now that they're in weak positions, it's fun to see how they'll succeed or fail.
@lightspeedbrothers4615

Interesting take. With Tom I think that all makes sense and is passable. With Greg, we still aren't getting enough of him. We're not getting enough of that "human parasite" that somehow always makes it into the right room. Truly feels to me like Armstrong is much more interested in the other characters and has had to shoehorn Greg in so the show doesn't totally leave him behind.

The thing at end of S3 with Greg & Tom was about betraying the kids, which they did. Then Tom couldn’t climb the ladder after that bc Logan died, which is why Shiv made the “you picked the wrong horse/ the dead horse” comment.
@lightspeedbrothers4615
Жыл бұрын
To be sure. And I think that moment would have worked for me if we saw Tom in a more prime spot for just an episode longer. His fall was so quick that the season 3 ending felt like it was immediately undone. Put in another episode or hell just more Tom and Logan time in those first two episodes, with the suggestion Logan may be eyeing Tom for head of ATN when Logan is gone, and the sting of Tom’s mistake actually hits home. Even if Logan is being non-credible and dangling something in front of Tom, if he suggested that at the end of the conversation that him and Tom had about Kerry, the feeling of defeat Tom feels in that episode feels so much more robust. To me, it really didn’t seem like Tom gained or lost anything from A) betraying the kids and B) Logan’s death which is why i take some issue with how he is being handled.

S04E05 is exactly what I watch Succession for. The other reason is Roman. And another reason is showing the little everyday misgivings and tragedies like Roman-Gerri interaction you find so unrealistic. That’s exactly what happens in human lives all the time. Shakespeare wouldn’t also happen in ‚real life‘ (AKA your life, because this is what it means). Let’s just tell people to give him 2.5 on Rotten Tomatoes. ;)

I'm really surprised to say S04E5 is why you watch Succession. It seems to be the critic's darling as scores on sites like Vulture are high but all the people I talk to about the show thought it was weaker comparably. And I get the Shakespeare point. However, we all have our bounds of suspension of disbelief. Succession lives in a heightened sense of reality and most of the time I'm on board with that. That scene, I do not think belongs in that heightened sense of reality. It doesn't feel right. Although I am confused on the 2.5 Rotten Tomatoes point I really like parts of his performance just have to critique others. Can't just blindly follow the opinions of everyone else and not criticize an element just because you will be met with resistance. ;)

I think he misses his old Gerri, and now he wants to take on the role of CE-BRO without time to mourn and process his emotions is key to how unnatural it comes across... I think that it’s scripted in its awkwardness.. He was always someone that never wanted to deal with things, so it’s interesting to see him purvey these emotions he doesn’t know how to deal with, I think we will see a breakdown soon with him weeping.

Damn dude, respect the opinion but you have pretty high standards/expectations on some of these actors and characters. I am just a casual viewer so maybe I miss some stuff but I think this show does a great job of things always making sense character-wise and seem reasonable from a believability standpoint. Like the Roman scene with Gerri, that makes sense in character to me, Roman, the heavily emotional damaged dude he is, reaching out awkwardly for someone that has given him emotional comfort in the past, only for it to be blown off because he had burned that bridge. That all makes perfect sense to me analytically and emotionally in how it played out.
@lightspeedbrothers4615
Жыл бұрын
Gotta love the comment for how you defended your viewpoint. For me, the “I’m pretty sad” is the dagger. Just comes off not as a natural Roman line, but Jesse Armstrong and Culkin trying to get inside his head and think about he would awkwardly talk to Gerri. And the result isn’t authentic awkwardness, but an inhuman response, in my opinion. I watch the show with friends every Sunday and had to hold my tongue because I was totally taken out of the moment. I saw the acting and the people behind the character, not Roman homself
@brandonwhite4992
Жыл бұрын
@@lightspeedbrothers4615 That's totally fair man. I actually was initially unsure about how to take that line and also Greg's "I'm sad" line in the next episode as well. I just personally took it as, these people are emotional black holes, they have never been taught/have never been around very many people who have a healthy way of expressing their feelings, let alone the totally heavy and complex feeling of grief. So in this moment I just took Roman saying that as the only way he knew how to get something out to hopefully get something back from a person he cares about, and then it just crashes and burns because of what happened earlier with Gerri. Totally understand your perspective on it though.

@@brandonwhite4992 that’s an interesting perspective though. Because if we look at all the times someone says “real” or “real person” in succession that repetition makes the phrase carry a lot of weight.
