I have a 2021 JLU Rubicon with the 2.0. I have been a Jeep owner since 1987. I have had several motors including V8s. I did months and hundreds of hours of research trying to find actual negative data on the engine. Everything negative I found was opinion without data on what someone "thought" would happen. I even researched the European versions of the engine to try and get longer reliability data. All the data based research I found was all positive for the 2.0 being the best choice. Most of the negative fall back of other Jeep owners (when I bring up the 2.0 specifications) is it will not be as reliable, but again that's all opinions. Time will tell. For now I have had the Jeep a year and love the engine on and off road; even running 37's. Off the line, on the interstate, crawling the rocks, or slinging mud with fast turning tires; for me it was the best choice.

Picked up a 2022 Sport S with the 3.0 V6 Turbo Diesel in April. I test drove the 2.0 and did not like it. It got up and moved ok, but it didn't feel right. I wanted the 3.6, but there weren't any in stock in any dealership nearby with the features I wanted. So I ended up taking the plunge with the diesel. I've got ~7200 miles on it now and couldn't be happier. I drive a mix of freeway and city as well as taking a trip from Wisconsin into the Ozarks and back. My average fuel economy has been ~27-28 mpg. On long freeway runs I can get up to 32 mpg. I love the torque on the diesel and couldn't be happier. Hope your 2.0 makes you as happy as my diesel made me. But hey, we're driving Jeeps, so we should be smiling!

I love this engine also. One thing I have heard people who don't have one complain about is the loss of control when you are off-roading and the turbo kicks in. This is a problem I have never had. I have never had a sudden boost of power while trying to get over an obstacle. Precision control of the throttle is a must and this delivers. I also love the fuel economy. Driving from Denver to Crested Butte and back I can easily get 30mpg if I don't have a lead foot going up the mountains.

I was skeptical about this engine but after nearly 2 years I am really glad I got it. Plus, it is all my dealer had in stock at the end of 2020, so it was either 2.0 or no Jeep. First time Jeep owner here and I did extensive research for months to try to find what I wanted. I had always wanted a 2 door as a 3rd car for fun, but got sick of waiting. I barely have to drive highway, and most days I'm on roads 50mph and work at home a lot. That said, it made it a much easier choice to daily this (and get the 4 door for kids). I wanted the Rubicon for the potential, and plan to off road it in all situations. Got a great deal on a 22' that had some highway miles, in the color I wanted, checked all the boxes and then it was all down to wanting the I4 or not. So far, no complaints at all. I haven't taken it into anything overly challenging yet but I'm looking forward to doing so! My previous car was 2011 Liberty that actually got worse MPG than this does. It's plenty capable off road. I don't know why I waited so long to get one. Thanks for the channel, super helpful for newbies like me.

You are getting better gas mileage with the 2.0T but only use premium. My 2015 3.6 is averaging 19.0 city and highway using regular and still running strong with 80k and no issues. Premium in my state is about a $1.10 a gallon more than regular. With a 22.5 gallon tank on the four door, you'll save around $25 each fill up using regular vs premium. With the 2.0T you'll get around an extra 67 miles on the 22.5 gallon using premium but you'll still save with the 3.6 using regular. But then again we don't buy jeep wranglers to worry about gas prices. Enjoy!

This engine is surprising, but the surprise I didn't like was at 10 months and 4,000 miles, the cloud of steam coming up from under my hood at a red light, and the stream of water running out from under it when I parked. Apparently, 3 little bolts at the thermostat housing ? loosen up, and it is a fairly frequent report in the jeep forums. I had the 2.0 in a 2018 Sport that I built... it was great as a daily driver, though I needed the iDrive to help me offroad (a bit too much power off the line that needed to be controlled) & I think the build slowed it down. However, I really do prefer the eTorque I have with the Xtreme Recon package. It's got pep & boogies down the road. I found that the 2.0 sometimes struggled to get out of its own way, especially up hills at speed on the interstate. And of course, I tow a camper so the larger engine is obviously working better for me... even with the loss of gas mileage.

In '21 I bought my wife a Wrangler Unlimited Sport Altitude with the 2l Turbo. Early in '21 I bought myself a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with the 3.6l. Both engines have their virtues but I would definitely get the 2l turbo in the Wrangler. It has tons of torque, is very responsive, and gets shockingly good fuel economy for a vehicle that has the aerodynamics of a brick. It actually gets better mileage than the GC even though the GC is much more aerodynamic - and it gets much better fuel economy in city driving. The fact that Jeep quit pairing the 2l to the Etorque system is a great plus IMO - it is much less complex and will help long term reliability.

I’m sure the engine is okay, it’s the turbo that will likely be a maintenance problem. Turbo driven engines require premium fuel, that really isn’t an option. My grandson was a Mercedes mechanic. He has lots of stories about maintenance issues that turbo’s have. That isn’t a problem as long as the vehicle is under warranty, but warranties have a definite coverage period.

@@DIRTROADCRED It seems the like the 2.0L engine is a big success based on the posts I’ve read. I have no doubt the engine performs well and lots of manufacturers are committed to the 4 cylinder engines with turbos. Time will tell how reliable it is in the long run. I’m old school, I’m partial to my 3.6L.

Wonderful video, been driving my 2018 JLU 2.0l around for about a year now and I’ve gone from 28k miles when I got it to 66k miles now and I’m about to hit a year. It’s nice to know someone who’s owned jeeps for a while backs this engine because some people are iffy, but what I’d like to ask about is the eTorque system. There aren’t a lot of videos clarifying exactly what the system is, and what it can do, and especially not why it was removed in the latest 2.0l rendition and added to the V6. I have the eTorque system myself, but it would be nice to know more about it, and even find out if later in its life if it ever fails, if it’s at all possible to remove the system all together.

The e-torque system from my reading is basically utilized for low-end take-off torque and it's attached to the cam. Basically, you are getting electrical-assisted power which in essence should help engine wear. The battery system is similar to electric cars it's a 48-volt regenerative cell that has a cooling system. My guess on why they ditched it on the 2.0L Turbo is because it makes decent torque down low compared to the 3.6L and they probably didn't see a use for 3 separate cooling systems also.

Factory tech here. I'd STRONGLY suggest against the 2.0l engine. So far they've been incredibly reliable, but the actual gas mileage you get is horrendous. Honestly, the 392 is the only engine worth a damn in the JL, but unfortunately it's prohibitively expensive for most people. (I've got a 16 JK and a 21 JL 392)

I have a 2020 Wrangler with the 2.0L turbo and it has been extremely excellent-comfirming your findings here. I just have a question regarding a sound; what is the "whirring" sound that seems to coincide with the RPM? My assumption is that this is the sound of the turbocharger. However, in the past month, I have not heard the sound. Does this mean that the turbocharger is down, or what exactly? So, I called the Jeep dealership and said they would need to diagnose my jeep. I am still under the powertrain warranty. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you. Leo

This engine is Direct Injection without any port injectors which Honda, Toyota, and others have gone back to to clean the intake valves. When you have a DI only engine the crankcase gas gets fed back into the engine which causes buildup of gunk on the intake valves. Over time this gunk turns rock hard and can't be removed other than removing the intake and using a walnut blasting method to clean the valves. DI engine manufacturers who had this issue for a few years now went back to adding another injector to each intake to resolve the issue not sure why Jeep didn't. I would avoid these DI only engines until the fix this issue.
