I bought the Classic Noise Marine just for that reason, there is just one problem. Pinkest Pink, Bluest Blue, Greenest Green, Yellowest Yellow, as well as LIT and PINKtm are all pigments so you have to makes sure you get a really clean and smooth mix of the paint or you will get an effect similar to painting with Typhus Corrosion. Also you must mix them with water before mixing them with anything else as the pigment will not mix in Lamia Medium directly I tried. Oh and for using LIT for plasma guns, I recommend it entirely. LIT is so strong that I used it for power conduits on my Ork Stompa and then painted over it with the Hexwraith paints and it glows through it no problem. If you get your hands on a UV flashlight and "charge" LIT with it they will glow in a well luminated room.

Two comments, here: 1) I'd love to see a followup video covering the results of airbrushing them (if you airbrush Black 3.0 does that negate the problems with it filling in details?), and also maybe the effects of acrylic matte varnish over all of them. I've heard tell that you can't effectively varnish the CultureHustle blacks because it ruins the finish they use to achieve their effect, but even so, if it turns out that Black 3.0 varnished matte looks darker than Vallejo Black varnished matte, that'd be worth knowing, wouldn't it? And it'd likewise be worth knowing if varnishing the CultureHustle paints makes them look lighter than the others, or if it just negates any difference at all. 2) Your finger-fondling Black 2.0 appears to have produced a fascinating subtractive edge highlight that honestly looks pretty good as a substitute for conventional edge highlighting. Weird.

I've messed around quite a bit with Black 3.0, and it is a really fantastic paint. However, for miniatures use it needs to be thinned quite a bit more than just two coats, and I'd suggest doing the first two thinning with a bit of flow improver. It's a chalky pigment, and the flow improver helps. Let it dry overnight after that, then put on the final coats with only water thinning. It will be very, very black, and not lose detail. However, if you try and varnish it, bad things happen (This is noted on their website, to their credit). So what's to be done? Well, it's a bit mundane, however it's now, hands-down, no-questions-asked, my favorite thing to paint the rim of bases. How boring, you may say, but it does that job just so, so well. It's fantastic. It looks like the base is suspended on top of some kind of void. Since I usually grab my minis by the top to move them, wear and tear is minimized, and worst case, maybe you have to touch up a bit. I'd also suggest drybrushing the rim-edge of the base such that there's a slight, circular highlight before it hits the void. This frames and contains the model being presented on the base.

@foehammer1172

Great video. I think the mattness (is that a word?) of Stuart Semple's Blacks is the key here. As it doesn't reflect light as much, it makes objects difficult to see when stood against a matt black background. It doesn't appear as dark a black as say Abaddon Black as that has a glossier finish, so the edges reflect light and the recesses appear even darker. Neither of these factors really matter if you intend to varnish your models (and similarly the fingering factor would likely disappear after a coat of varnish). I haven''t tried Black 3.0 yet, but I found that Black 2.0 to be nearly identical to Scale 75's black. Both are very heavily pigmented black paints, which means you can thin them down a lot and still get great coverage (I did find both will chip or rub easily, especially when applied to metal models). Ultimately I now use Black 2.0 for painting the rims of bases. It's works out much cheaper than the smaller hobby-targeted bottles, and can be thinned nicely and gets good coverage. It receives a good layer of varnish on top so whichever black I use doesn't really matter, and I may consider getting the even cheaper option you have show cased once my supply of Black 2.0 runs out (although I siphoned some off into a smaller dropper bottle and have no where near finished that yet, so it might be a while). Out of interest, Black 2.0 smells like cherries; what does Black 3.0 smell like? Thanks :D
@MidwinterMinis

Very interesting points! I know what you mean that the darkest parts of a gloss finish do look darker than any part of the Black 3.0 for some reason, but it might be a trick of the eye as it has a contrast reference point nearby from the bright sheen. To be honest, I didn't notice either paint had a particularly strong smell! Sad times, haha.

@lunahula

So the Vallejo Black as an airbrush paint you will find it has poor adhesion because of the thinning. To counter this you need to use a paint additive to break the surface tension of the paint, such as: 'Wetting Agent' by Golden. This prevents the paint from rolling up. Any paint applied by airbrush will always appear more matte. This is because application by airbrush is essentially a kind of pointilism that creates a micro surface texture. So any black applied by airbrush will appear more matte and if dark enough appear to absorb light without returning it. Black 2.0 and 3.0 might actually be coming off more on handling simply because the micro surface texture they end up with has a higher degree of friction when handled. Though unfortunately running something like AK interactives: ultra matte varnish over all of these models while it may give the desired result with the 2 intended for modelling and the cheaper option. It might actually make Black 2.0 and 3.0 gimmick for achieving its surface texture function less well. So the probably best application for the black 3.0 would be into gun barrels that will never be touched, but in which you want to create the illusion of a dark depth. All of this is probably moot however, since degrees of blackness is almost irrelevent to the human eye. Since our sight is based on contrast you can make any deep grey and bright grey look like black and white when they are beside each other. If you want to learn more look up: 'Eigengrau' in your search engine of choice.

This experiment brings a question to mind. With the result reached with the "cheap" acrylic I wonder if there is a difference between them just as there are differences between actual miniature paints (GW, Vallejo, P3, etc.) Maybe there is a "cheap" brand that is actually pretty good. We just don't know because we pass on the whole lot as "not for minis."

I use a lot of Vallejo. I'm tending lately to use Model Air/Game Air even when using a regular paint brush, the consistency suits my style, and Air metallics drybrush up to a fantastic metal look. I've also been using Ammo of Mig Jimenez, it's a lot like Vallejo Air, Mig's "matte black" is quite matte, and his Bluish Titanium is giving me awesome results on my Reaver Titans for "Adeptus Titanicus". I prime with airbrush and Vallejo Polyurethane primers, and I wash plastic models in warm soapy water before priming. It handles "OK", I usually airbrush varnish my minis too, sometimes several coats, as when on my Titans I'm building and painting in sub-assemblies. I've been using a bit more Citadel lately, their Air yellows are awesome if you use a drop or two of flow improver while airbrushing. I like matte finish in most cases - such on my military models and miniatures, but for me I control the finish with varnishes. For example, a gloss varnish to help the adhesion and appearance of decals, followed by matte varnish to get the final military look I want. Thanks for running the comparison test, it was nice to see the different applications and results. :)

I really just started stepping into the Airbrush sektion of the Hobby. But I must say, thinning the normal Model and Game Colors from Vallejo is ok but I am not very fond of the Game color Line. Have to try out the Air versions still. I have problems using Game Color with brush and airbrush.... the consistency is very random and it just tends to clog my Airbrush but also its mixing badly in the bottle and does not work well with brush either. Still like the Model color line very much.

@@erice.9514 I like Game Air, I haven't tried to thin any regular Game. Model Color can be gummy in the airbrush, depending on which color. That's a big reason I'm mostly buying Air of any of them. It somehow got me better results in the beginning in fine work) now I have a Evolution Silverline and try to understand it fully ^^

@@erice.9514 With airbrush, it can also be humidity, age of paint, and maybe the alignment of the moon. A funny thing about airbrushes too is they don't like to sit idle. It seems like the more times and more often they are used, the better they work. Also, I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner and Flow Improver, or 91% Isopropyl alcohol for thinning, I have never had good results with water.

I bought a bottle of black 2.0 a while back hoping to do something cool like 2D swords or highlight-eating shadows with OSL. Hmm, I don't know! If t was exclusive tech, a chemical lab could set up a Vantablack "mail order" service or something like that, the same way 3d printing companies can print something for you and send you it. @@MidwinterMinis It would be cool for sure. But nanotechnology is a fair bit more involved than a 3D printer. Large scale production tends to be cookie-cutter tech, not cutting edge and certainly not bleeding edge. BTW, one might get better results from black 2.0 and 3.0 by grinding the paint a bit. It is important to still highlight over the black 2.0/3.0. I know this ruins the point of it to make everything look like a black mass but for painting models u want the lines to stand out. I find a drybrush of skavenblight dinge from ciditel works nicely for this. if u want even more texture i sometimes do a lighter drybrush of warpfiend grey ontop this gives the black a somewhat fabric like feel.

Love the video, but I have to say I was hoping you'd do a bit more than just the base coat. I'd really like to see how each of the blacks takes to being painted over - even just basic shading or blocking in of additional colors would be another good test for them. I have used Black 3.0, but not for miniature painting (yet). This gives me some perspective on what to expect. I can say from my painting experience with it, it does not thin out well, so this is NOT the paint you'd want to use for washes or even blending. I plan on trying to paint a cloak with it, and seeing how it takes to adding a little shading for highlights, to make the ultimate sneaking accessory. I do know that adding a varnish over it does affect the "darkness" of the paint. You don't want to add a gloss, as that will just make it look like a nice black. Its matte-ness is what adds to its effect. I haven't tried it with a matte varnish, however. That might work a little better.

I have such strong opinions about this!!! First off, thank you for a really great video. Now, 2nd, I do believe you are correct. Abaddon black is one of my favorite blacks to work with, but I know it is way overpriced. However, I do buy it because even my GW bottles are fully emptied by the time I'm done and no paint in large quantities ever seems to last forever. And I agree with Vallejo model colors in general...they are brilliant, but are no touchy, rub off easy, colors, all of them. BUT, the winner in my book is Vallejo GAME color black, if you are going to spend up for Gamer paints. It is much more robust, and saves your detail very very well! While you should thin it, out of the bottle, it is much easier to work with thinning than the thicker Abaddon black. I work with Abaddon black anyway, when I do want a glommy paint to thin like I want (believe it or not, there is a purpose for me for that) and it supports my LGS. But Vallejo model color for cool blacks, my favorite! :D
