Should I buy the M1 Mac Mini or 11 inch M1 iPad Pro? First, I like the M1 iPad Pro because it’s quick, touchscreen, 120hz, I wouldn’t need to buy more peripherals has all the applications I need for photo and video editing + pro apps are probably coming. I would just continue to use my (kind of broken) gaming laptop for all the heavy videos. I also like the Mac mini because it already has pro apps only problem is I don’t have a monitor, keyboard, or speakers, the 16GB model is already $830 and I heard it has Bluetooth issues. Let me know your opinions down in the comments.

While you would have to buy more stuff to use that Mac mini, you don't have to start with top dollar stuff, if you have a recent HDTV you can use that as a monitor and get a basic keyboard and mouse to start with for like $20 or less. The bt issue will prob be fixed in a software update or recall down the road if it's widespread like the butterfly keyboard shit, and you may also be able to use an external USB dongle (not sure how 3rd party drivers are with M1/arm tho). With either option you'd have to buy USB c dongles anyway for transferring footage from an SD card and whatnot, but the Mac mini does also have 2 USB a ports
@ladajamesisback170

You could get the base model and cheap personals. Although, for video editing you want a color accurate display and a good keyboard that will last long. I also heard that it has stutter issues and many have upgraded to the 16GB model. The 16GB is already $830 so it will be about 1000+ with the peripherals I think you should go with the iPad Pro because it has everything you need already + IOS 15 will bring a whole new experience to the iPad.

I’m close to being an iPad veteran. My first iDevice was an iPod touch 1st Gen, then my second device the iPad 2nd Gen. Then iPad 4th Gen, iPad Pro 12.9 2015 and 12.9 2018. And I loved all of them. I love how far the iPad has come. And it’s my mainly used device, apart from the iPhone. Some days in a row my Mac is switched off and I do all work on the iPad

Luke, I think it’s time for us to have self control and restraint everytime newer models of gadget are launched. The questions of: Is it making big difference, so big that it could make our life easier, make ourselves happier? If the answer is Not Quite, then it is obvious that we should skip it, no matter how high tech it is, how pretty it is. I have Iphone 12 Mini because I dont need the Pro models. I use Mac Air for work, and I dont need the new Ipad Pro because my Ipad Air is so good and serves me more than well.

I'm going to stick with my 2020 11" iPad Pro because for me, it's the perfect travel companion. I have it permanently packed in a paddded, form-fitting Tomtoc shoulder bag, along with a 20,000 mAh power bank, a fold-up charger, a slender SSD, a mouse and a USB-C dongle, as well as all the leads I need to charge everything on the move. With the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, it is just perfect for me, and the bag seems to weigh next to nothing as I walk down to the pub or the coffee shop. I have a monster Alienware gaming laptop for the really heavy lifting, although the iPad is no slouch on Photoshop Lite and Luma Fusion. But I have the entire Adobe CC subscription, and it is a shame to me that I can't run all the apps on iPad Pro, as I am more used to Premiere Pro than Luma Fusion. There seems to me to be no point in buying an even more powerful iPad until there is software demanding enough to tax even my 2020 version.

The iPad Pro isn’t designed to replace s MacBook Pro, its rather an adjunct to:it because the MacBook Pro will remain a traditional computing device. In contrast, the iPad Pro is a touch screen tablet or convertible when paired with the Apple Magic keyboard. The iPad used to be a glorified iPhone but then Apple came out with a different operating system for it and that divergence will now grow with time. Luke didn’t mention it but you can use iPad Pro apps right on your M1 MacBook Pro, which is cool. Its no longer either/or in the Apple ecosystem. We’ll have to see what the future brings.

I still have my 9.7” iPad Pro from 2016. To be fair I only use it as an “accessory” to my MacBook Pro. For reading and scrolling the web I don’t see the benefit. I’d love the miniLED screen but a 12.9” screen would defeat the purpose of why I use the iPad. The iPad to me is like a middle spot for when you don’t want to use an iPhone but don’t want to use a MacBook either.

All tech youtubers seem to end up pointing out that Final Cut Pro might be the ultimate thing we need on an iPad. Probably that is true because that is their go to software as video editing would occupy the majority of their workflow. But honestly now, am tired of that opinion. We don’t even have the desktop level PowerPoint or excel running on the iPad operating system. We can only use it for minor edits or viewer. As a management professional that is the most disappointing thing I have found due to the limitations of IPad OS. As an architect, I would love if I can make use of the keyboard and mouse support on dektop level Autocad, or desktop level 3D modelling or BIM Applications. There is so much more that we expect out of a computer, which personally the IPad OS has to make up for.

You have a better value alternative for a keyboard and case for iPad that is the Logitech Combo Touch, is way less expansive and you get more value for the money, great build quality, it supports all iPadOS gestures and you can use it in a lot of different ways in my case I have the iPad Pro 10.5 one but since I’m upgrading soon to an 11” iPad Pro from 2020 I will move to a Logitech Combo touch version for the 11” one because I don’t really feel comfortable paying almost 400€ for a fucking keyboard and case from Apple that doesn’t guarantee full protection when I can buy one from Logitech for 130€ and save a lot of money on something that does exactly the same.

If it was on the 11 inch I may have been very tempted to upgrade my 2020 iPad Pro which would have been a little overindulgent after just 12 months. I’m in the same boat as you. I had the 2018 11” iPad Pro and I ended up upgrading to the new 12.9” iPad Pro and the size was the thing that scared me the most about upgrading. I didn’t go with the Magic Keyboard simply because I wanted an actual case that can separate from the keyboard and the iPad is still protected so I went with the Logitech Combo Touch and am really enjoying it so far. I will miss the portability of the 11” iPad Pro but I’m enjoying the larger screen and the Mini LED looks awesome. The extra cost over the 11” is definitely harder for me to justify. I had the benefit of being able to purchase through the education store so I got the 256GB model with 5G since my carrier will give me $200 back for activating it so in the end I spent $1100 for the tablet and $230 for the case. It’s definitely not my ideal for spending but I’m loving having the new iPad Pro so far and hope iPad OS 15 gives us even more capabilities out of it soon.

The iPad Pro can be used where it excels like browsing the internet, reading PDFs, consuming content on that awesome screen, and remoting into a desktop computer when needed. Luke you just paralleled my experience, when I got my new iPad Pro just last Friday (Australian time). Like you I didn't know just what to expect as again like you, I was jumping from an 11inch iPad this 12.9 inch Monster. My surprise was just as yours was, one thing that struck me was just how much extra screen real estate there was, it may have only been around 1.9 inches but I have to say since I have had it I'm certainly not complaining Being almost sixty the eyesight isn't what it used to me, so the extra screen really helps, can't say to much about the rest of the iPad as I'm still getting to know what it can really do, but first impressions are positive, Great screen, great audio, being an Australian tech is always expensive and this is no exception (Around wait for it, $1649.00 and like your's mine is also just the base model, did I hear you say "ouch" my reaction was something a little more stronger than that But I suppose you get what you pay for, and as I said before I'm not complaining when it comes to that screen and I'm sure over time as I learn what I can really do with this 12.9 I will like this 12.9 inch iPad just as much as I did with my 11inch iPad (Giving my 11" to my aunty who has never had an iPad before so hopefully she will get just as much Fun out of it, as I did)

The key for Magic Keyboard and the iPad, is to NOT carry Magic Keyboard with it all the time 🙂 It's more or less a docking station for the iPad. It maks it a "transformer" device. You can work & write on a desk, and then "unplug" it from Magic Keyboard and leisure on the couch with some videos, or do some content consumption during the commute - you don't have to carry Magic Keyboard around, or carry it separately in a bag, using iPad without on the go. It's the "choice" that makes it so great. Now: it's time for software to catch up! And Apple to "allow" more advanced and pro apps on the iPads (like programming IDEs, virtual machines...) But yeah - it's EXPENSIVE 😬

I still am on the 1st generation 12.9 iPad Pro and use it alot, mostely for media consumption, but looking forward to use it more as a productivity tool. I like it a lot and the battery does not seem to be suffering of the age too much. I believe what will come at WWDC in iPadOS 15 will make it very compelling to finally upgrade.

I feel like the 12.9 inch model is for people who want to have an iPad instead of a laptop. Smaller models are more of a supplement to that laptop.

No the 11 inch is for people who want a tablet

Got the 2TB version. Really disappointed (as is a lot of Reddit) with the dim screen edges that makes it look as though it is delaminating. No it isn't worth it if you have the Gen 3 or 4.

When I first got into PCs, in the early 90s, the standard monitor size was 14" which given that they were CRTs meant it was 13" visible. So your iPad is as big as a 90s monitor.

After suffering with dropped Bluetooth connections in the middle of typing, the Magic Keyboard’s Smart Connector is SO worth it.

I'm starting to think WWDC will be epic this year. Now that the iPad has an M1 I expect great things to happen with iPadOS and with the rumors regarding the new 16/14-inch MBP models I hope they show up. This summer will be expensive...

I love the iPad Pro I think it’s great but like 1099 is a ton of money for a tablet but for being more expensive then a MacBook Air with. 16gb ram and 512 gg ssd with a 8 core gpu for a iPad Pro with magic keyboard is a little obscurd

"PROS" are only expensive if they are treated just like mobile devices for light use and mostly consumption with a mobile operating system. "PROS" are worth it if treated like an actual computer that allows users to use all that power with a REAL operating system closer to MacOS. There is no getting around this, and will continue to be an issue for users of "PRO" iPads going forward if Apple insists in hamstringing the "Pro" line.

If it has an apple logo on it, it’s too expensive. Apple has gotten so good at reducing parts, materials and manufacturing costs that it can fool the world that it does not need to raise prices. It fools it’s customers by passing its redesigned products as higher end products and charging more for them. Before they would replace an old product with a new one and brag about how the price didn’t change. The iPad Pro is what the iPad would have evolved into. But apple has kept all its iPad refreshes as separate models it can charge varying amounts for. Now we will get to see the same tactic with the mac. Because it worked so well already.

Sorry, but no. At this insane pricing, there should be EITHER 1. proper macOS under iPadOS switchable UI 2. keyboard included or pencil / EarPods 3. full 4G connectivity, including regular phone calls and proper set of cameras like on top end of iPhones. Considering available software profiles, peripherials (or lack of thereof), OS capabilities, Apps iPads from A12 onward are OVERPOWERED.

I had exactly the same questions - I thought I give it a go. Aside from the issues of pre-order, you get it last philosophy, I did manage to get up at 6 AM and reserved one to be picked up at 11:45. The first mistake was to try to transfer my data from the old iPad which was on Beta 14.6 and thus caused the transfer to fail. Had to go into DFU mode to recover the IPP to its factory image. Now all is good. Aside from this I am learning the ropes and the ropes are new, difficult at some spots, like climbing a rope and the knots slip... But I wrote my first editorial this morning and I do have an interesting setup. I use mouse and keyboard, and it is almost like the words are just flowing, the screen is so good, I love how the rotation on my magnetic stand supports the iPad and not let it slip from the powers at all. Was it worth it? In my opinion, for my own needs: Totally

Rats. As an owner of a 2018 IPP, I had no intention of upgrading. But, when he said 'flabbergasted,' that sold me. It's having to buy a new keyboard that really irks me.

I don’t see the logic of needing the keyboard cover. I just have a cover and use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse at my desk if I need. Most times, I just write with my Apple Pencil.
