Also apparently the reason why leather on Romans is so popular is because a bunch of artists misinterpreted lorica segmentata as leather and so a lot of early directors stuck with the brown, muddier coloration because they liked the rustic vibes it gave... Honestly this was the first time I saw something about the Ministry of Christ where I felt like they didn't just tell us names and places, but gave us characterizations of the actual Chosen. Watching them come to life (not focused on Jesus, just on his followers) made me realize I'd never put a real human connection to the words. I could see the scenes I can probably recite a few. But at the end of it, I never considered them as people with interconnected relationships. This was the win for me.
@leirawhitehart1236
2 ай бұрын
Same, I've always struggled with reading the Bible, because it doesn't give any depth or insight into any of the characters besides Jesus, and don't get me wrong, of course Jesus is the most important person in the Bible, heck, the most important person who's ever lived, even, but given that, it's always made it difficult to understand what was happening at any given time within a scene. It made it very hard to picture, and connect with the people within it, such as the deciples, and so this show? I think it's a tremendous help to people like me who struggle with reading the Bible because they want to connect to the characters within it, and recognize them as real people who actually lived and had thoughts and feelings and loved ones, people they cared about. Now, of course, a lot of the characterization of the Chosen is mostly guesswork, as we can probably never get a completely accurate perspective on who the Deciples were, given they wrote about Jesus, not themselves or each other, but even so, even if they're ultimately wrong, it doesn't matter, because at least they're a face to see and a heart to connect to now. I love watching the Deciples interact with one another, as they have such great chemistry on set, and if you watch the bloopers, they also have great chemistry off set too. ^^ They really portray the Deciples as just a bunch of normal average guys, who all had unique talents and perspectives that hold great value to Jesus's ministry in one way or another. Overall, I think he's totally underselling the show and how unique and fresh it feels among Christian media. Criticize the costumes all you like, as I think that's fair, but when it comes to the show itself, I think it's beautiful, deep, and full of so much heart and wisdom. When Jonathan Roomie is up there, I feel almost like I'm seeing Jesus himself on screen, and i think that means he's done his job as an actor well. I could go on about this show and how good it is, but I should probably stop here. 😅

@@leirawhitehart1236 I agree with both of you. The Gospel isn't about the Disciples. It isn't supposed to be. But that can make it very dry reading. It's helpful to see the Disciples as real people who had separate lives and one day... how does the song go? "I was one way when you found me, I was not the one you see And the only thing that happened Was this stranger in between..." 😉
@leirawhitehart1236
2 ай бұрын
@audreyandlinCompany indeed, as while it makes sense that the Bible would really only be about Jesus and who he was rather than anyone else, the fact that it's _only_ about him, well, you said it best, the dry taste is hard to parch sometimes. 😅 Which is why I'm glad this series decided to focus on the Deciples instead, because not only does it make them feel more human and tangible to grasp, it also makes them feel more relatable, and it makes you feel at least a little better about yourself (... or worse in some cases) that if even they, who knew Jesus, and were as close as they could be with him at the time, if even _they_ didn't fully understand him, then it's ok, you have time for mistakes and misunderstandings yourself. It's ok to make these mistakes over and over again, because even when the Deciples made such mistakes, Jesus never gave up on them, and he _never_ stopped loving them. Each and every time they misunderstood his teachings, or even explicitly went against his teachings, he was right there to send them on the right path eventually, and was able to help them through their problems in a way that could also apply to us here living today. The Deciples serve as living examples for different kinds of people who may have different kinds of misunderstandings about who Jesus is, and what they want him to be. The way they think and feel about Jesus and the way they misunderstand his words, repeatedly even, they're ways that we can often do that also. So to see Jesus try and untangle all the misconceptions that even his followers may have, in real time, all these questions that you yourself may have had when reading the Bible, it's incredibly helpful for visualizing the meaning behind what Jesus is saying, and what he's truly trying to get at here. And to see real tangible examples for why he teaches what he does, and why, is also incredibly helpful. Like for instance, in the most recent season that just came out (spoilers), when Jesus and the Deciples are on the road to Bethany to visit his friend Lazarus, they get stopped by some Roman soldiers who basically force them to carry their stuff (which I didn't know that apparently they could do that at any time they wanted during that time), and the Deciples want to refuse, after all, they have some place to go, and the guards were being condescending to them. However, Jesus tells them to oblige. And so they do, and the soldiers make fun of them the whole way to the mile marker, and it's humiliating for them, but they're willing to do it, because Jesus told them to. They don't understand why yet, but they've come to understand that if he's ordering them to do this, he must have a reason. And sure enough, when Jesus keeps walking when he's told he can stop and he offers to help them through the rest of the way there when he doesn't have to anymore, the guards suddenly feel a bit bad about how they treated them, after a display of such kindness and humility in the face of mockery and unfairness. The situation they were put in, was indeed unfair and demeaning, but Jesus taught them in real time how to handle it with grace. And as far as I know, this wasn't even in the Bible, and yet, it does _such_ a good job of illustrating the kind of person Jesus was, and what he wanted from his followers. What turning the other cheek really means, and how to set aside your pride for the purpose of something greater in the distance. And that is also part of the value of this show, is it's very careful about what it adds to their story (because not everything that happened to them or everyone they ever met is in the Bible, so of course there's some room for speculation), and is diligent to make sure that whatever happens to them, whatever Jesus says or does that isn't in the Bible, that it aligns with who he is, and doesn't compromise on that. Because it is _so_ important for people to know and understand Jesus, and this may be helpful for those like me who may be struggling to do it simply through the Bible itself. Man, sorry again for going on another rant, but like I said before, I could talk about this all day. 😅

1 thing irks me a bit about Passion movie was their Mary Magdaline. She was portrayed as the adulterer who was almost got stoned & the Jesus saved her. Mary Magdaline wasn't an adulterer or a prostitute. She was saved by Jesus from evil spirits. The notion of Mary of Magdala as an adulterer or aprostitute came from a misconception by Pope Gregory I in the 4th century. He conflated her with Mary of Bethany (Lazarus' sister) & the sinful woman who washed Jesus' feet. Then that misconception became somewhat popular & turned Mary of Magdala into a former prostitute or a repented sexually defiant woman. The movie adapted her character into the adulterous woman.

@scripturalcontexts
2 ай бұрын
@@TetsuShima I remember that show, I think they were trying to base it loosely off of the story that Philo of Alexandria supposedly went to Rome to protest about the claimed erection of a statue of the emperor Caligula in the temple precincts, which some biblical scholars believe underlie jesus's statement in the olivet discourse about the desolating sacrilege. I'm thinking of that the creators of add were trying to argue the possibility of conditional prophecy, that the prediction could have been fulfilled if the statue had made it into the temple proper. Yet if you read the material about Philo's visit to Rome to stop this, I'm pretty sure that the statue never made it so much as into Judea but I would have to look into that or have somebody who is more knowledgeable than I am let me know.

Hi Metatron! i'm so excited you are covering this, I've been hoping you would. Please allow me to situate you to the story. There will be 7 seasons (8 episodes per season) of the tv series The Chosen. They have just finished filming season 5 which will be Holy Week. Season 6 (in 2026) all 8 episodes will cover only the passion. i assume it will focus on the back stories of all those associated with Jesus more than the crucifixion. The 8 episodes of season 7 (2027) will be the resurrection and beginning of Acts. The series claims to be first and foremost historical fiction drama and encourages viewers to read the gospels. When they do actually reference a Bible story they work very hard at being true to THE SPIRIT and accurate to the text from a Protestant viewpoint. Before production, the scripts are reviewed by a Messianic Rabbi, a Catholic Bishop, and an evangelical seminary professor of history.

FYI, the scene that you are critiquing in this show is NOT supposed to be the famous arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. In this show, the writers have inserted quite a few speculative scenes that are almost entirely made up, about things that might have happened, but were not recorded in the Bible. in this scene, Jesus is being detained and brought to a local Roman official for questioning, but it is at an early point in his ministry years, not at the point in the gospels where he was arrested for crucifixion.

Best not to judge/comment on biblical compliance ( even though you allow for creative filler) unless you have viewed all episodes of all seasons thus far. You open yourself to error and pushback if you rush to judgment. The scene you reference does NOT depict his final arrest in the Garden after the Passover meal with his apostles/followers. It is a foreshadowing, one that goes a lot better for him than the next. Big clues include the absence of *heightened* Sanhedrinic opposition to Jesus, as well as the absence of betrayal by one of his own. Both elements thicken the plot considerably and bring us to The Arrest.

Thanks for posting this episode, Metatron! I truly appreciate it! I've learned a lot and value the fact that you kept it professional by presenting facts. And YES, you should post a series about the historical degree of accuracy of "The Chosen". It will be highly appreciated.

Check out the armor in the first season's early episodes. He is one of my favorite characters, but his armor looked crazy. I'm so glad you noticed his armor was backwards. I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out what was wrong. I to abhor leather armor, unless it's the correct molded leather breastplate.

Respectfully, I think you are missing some context on the specific scene in question. That was not the final arrest prior to the trial and crucifixion, this was season two early in Jesus' ministry prior to the Sermon on the Mount before they even introduced Judas. Holy Week and the events in that time frame aren't until Season 5 (which is currently still being filmed).

Glad someone finally said something about the Roman kit!! This is a good analysis and would love to see more! Just a note about the arrest scene, the one showed was not suposed to be the arrest in Gethsemane but something they added extra-biblically for the narrative arc. The next season will show everything that goes down during Holy Week

The scene with Jesus is before his official arrest. This I believe was in season one or two. This isn’t the arrest that leads to his trial. I think they made this just for the show.

Metatron, you should of researched the show More before this. That’s not THE arrest of Jesus, it’s one of the many times before they tried to arrest him. The arrest during Holy Week will be coming in this next season.

The artistic license with the disciples is rather interesting and thought provoking. Whether reading the NT or in traditional movies, the amount of focus on Jesus leaves a lot of open space about the personality of different disciples. It can make a person wonder about how they would of reacted in a particular scene rather than have everything revolve around and orbit Jesus.

Great show, not so great costumes, lol! But I'm used to that, precious few historical shows of any era are anywhere close to historically accurate costuming. That being said, The Chosen had a shoestring budget so costuming would not be the most accurate. Bigger budget stuff doesn't have that excuse, lol!

Thanks Metatron! i really hope you will continue commenting, but i hope you can watch the entire series so you can be fully informed before you do more comment videos. I hope you can watch the series in order from Season 1 episode 1 through Season 4 episode 8 so you can comment on the story arcs of the characters, historicity and Biblical interpretation and the character back stories they are developing. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on the calling of "Z" (Simon the Zealot) and his sica dagger and how they represent the Zealots. I'd also love to hear your perspective of the political intrigue of season 5 when it comes out. i would also love to get your costume comments to those in charge of costumes. Maybe you could post a video on just costumes that i could share with them?

Second Temple Period specialist here: It's worth noting that another of Jesus's Apostles, Simon Zelotes, was explicitly identified as part of the Zealot faction of Second Temple Jews. Given that he was still known as "Zelotes" in the Gospels, it seems likely he retained that affiliation and (given that the Sicarii were part of the Zealots), it's entirely possible he would have carried a sica with which to carry out the assassinations for which they were famous.

It's not a representation of the arrest where Jesus gets betrayed by Judas 😅 that's why what you talk about doesn't happen (it's a scene that is not from scripture but created for world building)

Interesting reaction. Though I think the arrest was not from Judas's betrayal but just a summon that is probably why there were not too many soldiers. I also realised the series did not entirely follow scripture to the letter. They added some artistic elements to spice up the show.

In reference to spies. The books written by Lindsey Davies - The Falco series - which were written with a lot of input from experts/archaeologists/historians - give a good explanation of the role of spies (a recurring character is an imperial spy), how it works and who runs what and why. For anyone interested.
