Khortytsia Floodplains are one of the remnants of the famous Great Meadow, preserved almost in its original state. These are the very fragments of what was once a vast and unique ecosystem! We can see how the blue of the lakes has, in some places, been replaced by the velvet of young forests! Pioneer vegetation, primarily willow and poplar, is thriving abundantly on the lake beds! As we can see, there are fewer water bodies, but the forest area is increasing. Many hoofed animals, such as roe deer and wild boar, can be observed. There are also many reptiles and birds. However, due to the sharp change in the water regime of these territories, there is an excessive fire hazard, and the floodplains burn quite often. Of course, these fires do not occur without human involvement! Nevertheless, these negative processes should diminish year by year, and people must help in this. That’s why my group of researchers monitors the condition of these areas and strives to promote science and sustainable resource management, encouraging people to care for the natural wealth of our country! In our opinion, all negative phenomena in the ecosystem and climate are, firstly, related to global processes on the planet, particularly global warming, and secondly, to the sharp change in the hydrological regime of vast areas of the former Kakhovka Reservoir bed! Therefore, the faster a forest grows here, the sooner the consequences of this disaster will be mitigated! When the Great Meadow flourishes, Ukraine will flourish as well!
