I disagree on the lenses, I got a gfx 50s and own most of the native prime lenses. I couldn't be happier with them. These are amazing, robust, well built lenses that will give you superb image quality. My favourites being the 45mm, the 80mm and the 23mm

They are definitely great quality but I find that they don't give you that shallow depth of field and exaggerated separation. I think the only lens I would get would be the 45 since there aren't many other options out there right now

@@taranspicturesI see! I understand. I think we have different opinions about the same lenses because ee have different demands. I'm not super into the shallow depth of field effects thats why It's never bothered me. For example, one of my favourite lens is the 80mm 1.7 but I can't remember having ever used it at 1.7. There's another gfx user on KZitem with more or less the same opinion. Basically they are superb lenses but maybe not designed to be used in the way you want. I got you 😊

Great review and nice sample images! I own 2 x GFX50s's and the new GFX50S Mkll, I love the dynamic range of the 51.4 MP sensors. I also own 9 Fujifilm native lenses the 20-35, 32-64, 45-100, 45, 63, 80, 110, 120 and 250. All are in my BRUTALLY sharp category. The AF with the newest firmware is spot on. In single mode the AF is dead accurate. Have used for VOGUE, ELLE, GRAZIA, Harper's BAZAAR etc... Actually to calculate the 35mm equivalent it is 0.79 x the focal length. 🙂

this is high praise coming from yourself! I'm familiar with your work as shared through DPreview. It makes sense that you have that many GFX bodies for your professional work! Been thinking about getting a GFX50 SII but as I have an X-T2 that I love will most likely move to the X-T5. The quality of the images on the newer X-T5 sensor looks perfect for my own needs.

I already get something like the color and sharpness of the medium format look and slow pace of shooting with the Sigma SD-1 Merrill + 18-35mm f/1.8 and that gorgeous Foveon sensor for less than the GFX 50s body alone. But the handling (dials, tilting back panel, removable EVF) and sensor size coupled with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4D is really attractive to me atm, since it would get something like a 65mm equivalent FOV and it covers the whole sensor, similar to the Mitakon actually. It's absolutely a really expensive nice-to-have that maybe I can one day indulge in just for being able to shoot street with the film-era controls and a waist level viewfinder only. But I'll keep dreaming until then lol. Have fun taking pics with this lovely setup that's very close to what I want!

You must have a faulty camera mate. I’ve previously had the 50R and now have the 50Sii… I’m sorry but the AF is NOT ‘very bad.’ Of course it’s a contrast based AF so the AFC isn’t great but the single point AF is really good, even in low light. It’s actually faster than the Canon 5D4 and 6D I used on weddings.
@taranspictures
Жыл бұрын
If you read what I added I said it's slow not bad. I've used multiple different GFX models and they are all not great. The best one I found was the 100s, the focusing on that was decent but it struggles more than other cameras I've used. I found that it hunts for focus quite a bit so it just takes longer than other cameras, not loads longer but it is very noticeable.

I shot with the 85mm F1,2 full frame mitakon, that is a serious piece of glass.

I don't know why you're so angry about this? I've used the 110 f2 and yeah it's a good lens but I wouldn't say it has a medium format look, I haven't heard of those other lenses so I can't comment on them but you may be right about them looking great. The mitakon can be soft because it is easy to miss focus, I have nailed focus only a few times but each of those times the sharpness is outstanding

@@taranspictures medium format look isn't shallow DoF, like you think and keep saying. it's getting a 50mm or a 35mm field of view with the compression of a 80mm lens! or it's shooting at f35 with out diffraction, or the greater tonal rage you get form a medium format camera. so saying you want them to look like a medium format image because of the shallow dept of field is asinine ! just like judging the spectacular GF lenses because they aren't f 1.2. you are missing the point of medium format.

I always enjoy your videos. I agree on the slow aperture Fujifilm lenses, mostly f/4 or slower. But they are releasing a supposedly fast focusing 55/1.7 this month which I am excited about. Pricey though, $2300 MSRP. The medium format look isn’t just shallow DoF, it’s the bit of extra compression you get from shooting longer focal lengths but getting the same field of view as a 35 mm camera too. But since it’s only 44 x 33, it’s not a great diff, but it is noticeable.
@taranspictures

I didn't know they were releasing a new lens, that's interesting. 100% the extra compression is probably the most important part to be honest, I just wish it was a little more noticeable than it is right now.

@@taranspictures Thanks for the interesting video and nice images! With that said, I'd like to correct this common misunderstanding about medium format and compression. The geometrical characteristics of an image can be split into two elements: distortion and compression. Distortion is purely a function of distance to the subject - no reliance on sensor size nor focal length. For a 3D object like a person's face, drawing the light rays from a focal point to the nose and cheeks/chin can easily illustrate this. We generally consider wide-angle lenses to have more distortion because we need to be closer to the subject to have them take up the same size in the image. If one takes an image with 85mm and 35mm lenses at the same subject distance and crop in the 85mm to the 35mm's framing, the subject will have the identical amount of distortion. Compression, on the other hand, is purely a function of the field of view. If the subject is always framed at the same size (i.e. adjusting subject distance as necessary), a larger FOV will give you more background (i.e. background elements are smaller). Similarly, a telephoto lens with a small FOV will "stretch" a smaller portion of the background, leading to what we recognise as background compression. Here's the critical part: once the crop factor is taken into account (which, I'll note, is simply a useful tool to compare apples to apples in the camera world - focal length is a physical measurement and does not change with sensor size), the FOV is constant between, say, a 65mm Mitakon on the GFX and 51mm lens on a full frame sensor. An identical FOV leads to the same background magnification, and thus the same compression. What this all means is: the geometrical characteristics of two lenses on two sensor formats, once the crop factor conversion is applied to both the focal length and aperture, are *identical*. The 65mm f/1.4 Mitakon produces the same image geometry as a 51mm f/1.1 full frame lens (other than the different aspect ratios). Of course, medium format has other optical advantages like smoother gradations and highlight rolloff, as well as more detail. But there is no "extra compression" on the GFX. Sorry for the long post, but this misconception is very widespread and thought I'd clarify ;)

one other point, the price of 6 or 7K for the camera is Cheap, by the Nikon Z, & Cannon R baseline as they are in this range, the More expensive option are the Mamiya/Phase One or Hasselblad H MF systems, which run $60K to start with ($20K of this for the Digital back alone!); so in this light they are cheap.

Yes it is definitely more affordable when compared to them but it's still expensive though, that's like saying that a Lamborghini isn't expensive because there are Bugatti's when in reality both are expensive

one point about AF and MF cameras, in the main, these have CONTRAST detect only, NO phase detect AF like mirrorless cameras and dslr's have! The lens diameter and weight is bigger, so more to move around, on a Single motor. There is one exception to these norms, that is the Hasselblad X2D, this has all the modern tech, Plus two focus motors, Subject tracking, etc.

It's a mix between the shallow depth of field and then extra compression and seperation that comes with the larger sensor. You can easily get the shallow depth of field with a full frame or even crop sensor camera, but you would struggle to get the seperation and compression
