I like the G3 for its comical development history. STG-44s couldn't be produced fast enough, and were still a bit expensive, so there was a trial for a new rifle. One group made a few prototypes based on the locking mechanism of the MG-42, but had to flee the oncoming soviets, and eventually the team set up a shop in Spain, and would produce the CETME Model 58 rifle based on their old development. Come the rearming of the Bundeswehr in the 50s, they want a new weapon, and ask FN for a license to produce the FAL. After invading Belgium twice, the answer was No. So instead Germany turned to Spain, and made a version of the Spanish battle rifle. So the G3 is a German rifle, based on a Spanish rifle, based on a German prototype, based on a German machinegun, because Belgium held a grudge.

The one and only time I saw real soldiers in the wild I was vising Ensenada around the same time, 2003 I think. We were just Gringos on a tour bus, and lo and behold, here was a large formation of armed Mexican soldiers on foot (The tour guide explained "they are looking for drugs" which had to be close to the truth, I guess). The Mexican soldiers, numbering at least a company (100-150 men), were an impressive sight as they walked with their G3 rifles, clearly not liking this duty much but doing it anyway like good soldiers do. And collectively these men gave off the unmistakable but formless vibe of casual power that all large groups of armed men inevitably do, which I could easily perceive from the windows of the tourist van.

It could also be rebuilt on the original receiver more times than the FAL and M14 thus greatly expanding the service life of the rifle. On his website’s Battle Rifle page Larry Vickers states that the FAL is his favorite Cold War battle rifle, the M14 is the more accurate, but the G3 is the most robust of the lot. The custom scope mount would be my biggest gripe with this rifle. Modern mountings using rails are just superior and simpler to use. It's a rifle that was designed for cheap mass production and it's conscripted operators using mainly the iron sights in a defensive cold war scenario, nukes flying and all... Still, it would probably hold up fine in a zombie apocalypse, if only because of the raw power of the 7,62×51mm NATO round. Yeah, there's better for both longer range and shorter today, but if I only had one rifle to choose for an all-rounder, I'd probably choose this one, or my Bren2 in 7,62x39mm WP.

As a German who was a conscript in the Bundeswehr in 2004 we still had those. I honestly don't remember lots of the technical aspects. But it was great to shoot. It had a incredible kick so it was something you had to get use to. 100 or 200 meters target shooting with no optic was no problem. Ok my eyesight today is not that good anymore. However it was a nightmare to clean. I also shoot the G36 so I could comps those 2. If I could have a gun it would be the G3. It it and was a great gun. The only problems I remember with this gun was if you had a old magazine ( hope this is the right word) and it was bend it didn't feed the cartridge into the gun and it would jam the gun.

Love my G3. I love the FAL, but mags being $4-$8 for the G3 (and all standard) as opposed to the $30-$40 mags for the FAL (and having two different types that aren’t interchangeable) puts the G3 over the top for me. It’s also easier to mount an optic or accessories on a G3 than an FAL since there’s a lot more of an aftermarket for them.

Be cool to mount a scope on that and run it as a DMR.
@robertmaybeth3434
11 ай бұрын
You can do it but it's awkward to do, and you are almost certain to scratch the parkerizing to do it. I bought such a mount since it is the same type that fits my GSG Sturmgewehr .22 rifle. And the mount hangs on for dear life to the stamped receiver, by clamping on to the rounded portion of the upper receiver with a kind of claw grip. It worked well enough for .22 LR but I can't imagine that precarious claw arrangement is going to hold up to the recoil of 7.62 for long before it just falls off the gun.
@sirdimitrios5454

@@robertmaybeth3434There are specially made scopes and sights for rifles that tend to dmg them. @@sirdimitrios5454 "Designated marksman's rifle" you mean? Seems to me you wouldn't have a good solid scope mount on a G3 rifle without welding something on. But I don't own one so IDK.
@sirdimitrios5454
11 ай бұрын
@@robertmaybeth3434 Yeah thats what i mean by dmr. G3 and other such battle rifles tend to really dmg other scopes so they usually have specialised scopes (and scope mounts) for them which are sturdier and made specifically for the weapon. The thing is if you get a specialized scope mount for the g3 and run you own preferred scope that you use for a similar weapon there is a chance ita going to kill it almost immediately. So i would suggest in case you get a g3 or other types of battle rifle get their specific scope mounts as for scopes there are sturdy scopes that will survive so its not necessary to get a specialized one for each weapon. But thats all i know to be honest i am not aware of a general scope mount that will hold on i only know what i learned from the military and a bit of my own research we are not allowed to own such weapons unfortunately in my country so i cant really tell you about a specific one I'd use since i haven't tested it. All we used in the military was usually specific scopes and we didn't really use scope mount apart from some old training rifles that were not updated again all with rifle specific mounts.
@sirdimitrios5454
11 ай бұрын
@@robertmaybeth3434 Still the mount if made for the rifle works decent i mean it's not like welding it where it goes no where sometimes (rarely) you might encounter issue. As for the weapon if you dont have a battle rifle man i highly suggest one they are fun to shoot and i think it short of completes the set if you know what i mean.

@@jantschierschky3461 The M16 was good enough to last from the 60's to the 80's. It was the chosen weapon of The MAIN Country Fighting the Cold War. I'm sure it was actually used in combat in the Cold war more than the others. And it is the ONLY one who survived the Cold war and continues on today in variants that see Frontline use. That is just on our side of the Cold war. The Ak on the other side was even more prolific. Before the Cold war ended most countries had seen the light and were moving away from the G3 and FAL anyways. The FAL was much better than the G3 which mainly benefited from the myth of superior German engineering and HK lobbying prowess. What rifle is HK known for now? @@sjhoff well when I served mid 80s, we had excercises with US marines. Those M16 were worn out and were crap till the A2 come along. In any shooting exercises we won hands down with our G3s even the gun I used was same vintage as me 1963 so older than any of the M16s. I never had a failure with life ammo even at -40 C. Well till Powell revamped the US military in 85 it was in a sorry state. The major issue with a G3 it's weight. Hk could not make a gun lighter than 3.8 kg with the roller delay. So it used a short stroke gas system. So the M16 after nearly 60 years of modifications has become an amazing system. But personal experiences as an 2 gun and Ipsc shooter. The roller delay blowback makes it a dream to fire. The FN and G3 dont have a lock open last shot, but the FN can be made to do this by a simple reverse mod that the factory has omitted. It was originally designed to lock open but the Brits though dirt would get in so the factory just override it.
