One of the things I love about halo is that the weapons looks like a believable evolution of modern firearms. Conventional Guns can only get so advanced after all. It’s sci-fi, but it’s grounded in reality in a cool way.

Yeah, i don't think people realized that your typical firearm basically hit a point of diminishing returns somewhere between WW1 and the cold war. So most improvements have been in tiny increments, or to things like ergonomics, durability, weight, etc. The basic function has for the most part stayed the same, and probably will stay the same until we find a more efficient powder, can make more efficient gauss/rail weapons, or something we can't even conceive of right now.

As for the recoil I imagine they probably have figured out how to minimize felt recoil as much as possible but even so it jumps quite a bit in Chief's hands. And so while they are hundreds of years into the future, the general style and design of the weapons feel as if they’re just an advancement we’d see today. A lot of the “sci-fi” feel for Halo when it comes to modern humans is in the ships and weapons like the Spartan Laser and railgun, etc. Overall though, the weapons don’t need to look super sci-fi to be a part of modern humanities arsenal in Halo. Especially since guns like the desert eagle have made an appearance in Halo before (source is Shadows of Reach for the deagle). The true sci-fi in Halo, in my opinion at least, comes from the Covenant, Forerunners, Ancient Humanity, etc.

For me it does not matter what lenght the slug is or where it is reloaded or how many bullets it holds, all that matters is if it has a place in the PvE/PvP sandbox. Thats why I never liked the H3 shotgun, it just felt like it was utterly useless in almost every situation in comparison to other available options. My favorite shotgun is actually the H4 shotgun, because its a good mix between range and power, no zoom and mega range like in H5, but way more functional than the H3 shotty.

I think the 4 and 5 versions of the shotgun were the best from a design standpoint. Everything about them screams situational use (as it should), from the tactical stock to the flashlight on a side mount

Idk man, most of the UNSC's weapons are super feasible. The Assault Rifle is just a bullpup automatic rifle with a 30 caliber cartridge. The Magnum has a similar fixed barrel design to a Desert Eagle. The Sniper Rifle is literally based on the NTW-20 The Shotgun is basically just a pump shotgun. The only one that's really out there in the original trilogy and its side games is the SPNKr. Halo 4 and 5 include some extra strangeness, like the railgun or sticky detonator, but those aren't too outlandish either. It's really only the aesthetics that make the UNSC's weapons "sci-fi," and even then, that's more a testament to the immaculate vibes of the UNSC.

I like sci-fi that is in the realms of possibility of being done in the future. For instance, I love the Death Star and while we don’t have a literal planet destroying in one shot weapon it is something that could be in the realms of possibility in the future. It’ll have nothing on the powers of The Force but still

No one is a fan of the new halo pistol the Mk50 Sidekick as it's called for quite a few reasons. Mostly to do with astetics in the games. Now the Mk50 Sidekick would also not be even close to the M6 series pistols in terms of stopping power in real life. Chief and the UNSC went from the M6 pistol being standard issue 12.7x40mm sidearm. To the Mk50 Sidekick which is a 10x31mm weapon. Unless that pistol has been upsized from human hand size to giant its going to look like Chief is going to break it if he pulls the trigger back hard enough. For what they are fighting the Mk50 Sidekick is way underpowered. And it doesn't have the right look. So I actually agree with you on this one. Oh and there is a prototype of the M90 shotgun made by a fan using a 12ga Remington shotgun as it's base just flip like the M90 shotgun from Halo.

Anyone who knows something about weapons knows that guns have already sort of hit a point of diminishing returns. So barring some discovery that makes other designs more practical, or current designs ineffective. I don't foresee crazy changes to gun designs for awhile. If anything, the concept of infantry will probably vanish before our typical weapon designs. I mean, we still use variations of guns made 50-100 years ago.

Bungies original design philosophy regarding the UNSC weapons wasn’t to make them saturated in science fiction. It was meant to be grounded in some kind of reality, like they could exist today in our world. I think that’s one of the many things that makes halo so special is that it balances realism and this larger than life sci-fi.

It’s still not even sci-fi, it has features other guns have, that haven’t been ported over to a shotgun because the design isn’t broken. Even the CE pistol isn’t that sci fi, it’s literally just a beefed up desert eagle on a different frame

There is a top loading shotgun in real life, it's called the RMB-93. It's russian made and has the magazine tube on top just like the M90 CAWS. The only difference is it's chambered in 12 gauge unlike the m90 that's chambered in 8. They're super rare and are not available for import as far as I know.

I give a pass to the halo shotgun in so much that is a believable piece of military kit. being magfed would be more convenient but with buckshot the pellets tend to mostly spread high so having a tube over the barrel is ok and seems like somethin Benelli or mossberg could try at some point in the near future since military arms procurement would probably make a case for bein able to topoff the tube versus switch to an entirely new weapon system like the almost 70 years now weve been rocking a m16 variant now and I am including the sig spear in that as its essentially just another m16 variant in my eyes as its controls and manual of arms aren't that different. Probably just costs more

10 gauge shells knock people over. 8 Gauge shells have recoil that is absolutely unbelievable. Only a spartan could wield it as effectively as they do. Any marine using one would only be able to use it for a bit, then they have a really, really, sore shoulder. An 8 gauge shell is nearly twice as tall a 12 gauge shell.

I like the Halo shotgun, i think its a staple of the franchise. But i also dont think its a very good "combat shotgun." As others have stated, since shotguns are only really used as less-lethal and door breaching tools irl, not much innovation is required. However, if there was a need for a shotgun as an offensive weapon, there's a lot of improvements that could be made. IMO the most important change would be swapping to a rimless shell so you can use them with more standard magazines. Tube fed pump shotguns always feel powerful in games, but a semiauto magazine fed gun would be every bit as powerful and wouldn't take ages to reload. Seriously, even if the capacity and damage were the same, why would you ever choose a lever action rifle over a semi/full auto combat rifle in a military firefight scenario?

Hey no clue on if this idea is more what your looking for. This is a item set up in my own world for a story I'm writing but it deals with programmable matter. I call them live rounds in story but it's a lump of metal when activated can run an process a line of code. This code can change the function of the fire arm on the spot. This is versatile but I would like to focus one one mode in story that is used more often than others. This projectile if not programmed or contained with another smart metal alike will bore through the armor and drill through your body. Making even non lethal hit critical. Other things it has but may need additional tools to use are Am I conversation ( Anti armor, explosive, rat shot, so on) In flight tracking Super heating Upload and down load function. (I use high tel as the excuse for a lot of this but in story it's not electronic. It's tectonically magic. I do have in world logic to it but it's a lot to explain in a comment)
