There are 2 reasons why Thai and Lao scripts are different from each other. 1. Thai scripts has been modified to be more straight box looking with sharper coners, while Lao scripts remain the ancient cursive looking components in the letters. 2. Lao scripts has been simplified and made to be more phonetic in the spelling system, while Thai scripts remain the original spelling with unimportant cluster letters and silent letters mostly in words from foreign origin namely Sanskrit and Khmer.

Central Thai related to Mon more than Lao sine Thevaravada and Lavo kingdom there is picture on Angkor Wat wall that show Lavo army and Siam Kuk army war against Khmer. Example of people of Mon descents are King rama1 and ex prime minister Anan Punyarachun they are not dark. Edit: From research of DNA test, Thai people in central (Thai Siam) have DNA that relate to Zhaung less than Laotian and Isan people but have O2 that relate to Chinese Burmese Karen more than O1b1+ O1a that is DNA of Zhuang (pure Tai) and got mix with more other DNAs unlike Laotian. It’s mean central Thai are less Tai than Laotian.

@@betacarotine7679 lol Laos was named Lanxang before. It was a kingdom. Then, it was fractured into 3 kingdoms because of political instability and siamese attacks. The three kingdoms passed under siam's control. However, the three Lao kingdoms never lost their identity, they remained Lao. Even Europeans who visited Southeast Asia knew the differences between Laos and siam people, like Alexandre Henri Mouhot, Auguste Pavie, etc. Then Lao people finally succeeded into reforming their country. They lost a lot of population, however. Lao people went under French protectorate, it helped Laos to become One country again.

yes they are very similar, but as you said, the devil is in the details, so those small tones and pronunciation differences can lead to some misunderstandings. But nowadays Laotians from Vientiane speak Thai very well, so no much problem.

Zero reason to learn Lao language. When I visited Vien Tien and Luang Prabang every laos can speak Thai fluently. On internet most of Laos use Thai language and script to communicate even it's broken Thai most of the times but you still can understand. There is no incentive to learn Lao language too because Laos rarely produce media and books while every Laos watch Thai movies, TV show and news, read Thai books, news and Thai website. Just simple fact that almost every Laos learn to speak, read and write Thai language but I've never see any Thai want to learn Lao language.

That’s because you guys used the Lao language to create the Thai language so you already know it. FYI the Thai alphabet came from the Lao alphabet so when you say You don’t know any Thai people who want to learn the Lao language that’s probably true because your ancestors, the one who did want to learn the Lao language to copy it is dead and gone many hundreds of years ago.

You're putting words in my mouth by saying I claimed a borrowed Khmer word as a native Thai word. You gave me examples of the Thai language borrowing Sanskrit scripts and modifying it, you gave me examples of the Thai language borrowing words from other languages just as Lao does too. But what does that gotta do with the Thai language being a descendant of the Lao language?

I don't know why many other Southeast Asians tries to undermines the East-Asian-ness in Vietnamese...
