“Doing what the locals do” is great if you can convince yourself it’s what you’re doing. I’ve lived in my current city for over 20 years and I honestly have no idea what we locals do. Walk at the park one day a week and watch TV at home most nights? 😀 The London Pass was essential to my wife and me for a few reasons. One, I’m not a local, and despite how many videos about London travel there are, you could never really feel like a local. It’s awfully tough to convince yourself to just “hang out” where the locals do and hope for some kind of slow, carefully planned authentic experience to happen. “Doing what the locals do” may sound more carefree, but I assure you that you would pre-plan just as much, if not more, to figure it all out. What the London Pass provides are ready-made options you don’t really need to sweat about. And what made it even greater for me was that we paid for the pass long in advance and it felt like once we got to London it was cool having so many “free” options to do! I don’t have to tell anyone that London is expensive. Not having to keep shelling out $$ for everything significantly eases the day-to-day money strain. It’s like getting the pass to go on all the rides at the amusement park. Doesn’t mean you have to go on all the rides. But you don’t have to keep counting $$ all day. As well, that we paid for the pass about 8 months in advance may have helped us forget about the money we initially spent, but it didn’t make us forget about the money we were saving when we were there. If that makes sense. And if something feels free, I’m much more adventurous to try something I might otherwise convince myself is too expensive in the moment. For instance, going up The Shard is quite expensive for two people ($120 Canadian) but felt like a cool bonus to go up with the pass. And skip the line to buy tickets. If not for the pass, we definitely wouldn’t have done it. Yeah, it’s a tourist thing, but the view of London up there is still incredible. Tourist or not. The pass quickly pays for itself, too. Knock out 2-3 places a day (not unreasonable) and you’ll more than save money with the pass. The pass doesn’t mean you can’t explore, wander, or just sit a couple hours at a restaurant patio, drinking coffee, or enjoying a few drinks. It just helps in filling the time in between relaxing and taking all the breaks you’d like. I’d 1 million % recommend the London Pass. It helps give you direction, saves you money, and allows you to be more adventurous. After a couple trips to London, you’d obviously travel there very differently, and not need the pass. You could then be more like a local, maybe. I do think, though, that if I ever go to a place enough times to feel like a local, it’s time to explore another exciting place!

I've visited London 3 times, with each stay being either 1 or 2 weeks. Every time, I bought a 6 day London Pass, and a 7 day travelcard (or 2) on my regular Oyster card, and every time, I saved money on my sightseeing and transport around town. It's definitely worthwhile to plan out your daily itineraries in advance to make the most of the pass. Now, I might be running out of attractions to see... Maybe just a 3 day Pass next time.

I went for 9 days! It was worth it because I didn't have to worry about having pounds on me/use my credit card! Most places open at 9/10 am and last entry is about 4/5 pm, you have to be quick about places (don't spend more than 2 hours) and plan to see all the places in the area you are at if you want to see it to make it work it.

Thanks for this video. That's a good summary of the pros and cons. Personally I think 3 days is about the sweet spot. In 3 days with the pass I went to 15 different attractions and that was just about enough. By day 4 I saw most of what interested me and moved on to other things like going to west end shows and taking coach tours. One warning for night owls though - a lot of the attractions close around roughly 5:00 PM so plan your day out carefully to avoid missing things.

I bought the 6-day pass for £139, and it was worth every penny! I even went to Windsor Castle. The LP includes the to-&-fro train rides (each direction £10.50) to Slough. Make it an afternoon trip cos the train ticket is only free after 12:30pm every noon. The train closest to 12:30 is the 12:50. So make sure you reach Charing Cross (the tube/train station to set off to Slough) by 12:30. I also went to Hampton Court. My god, after crossing the bridge & turning into the gate, you see the magnificent facade of Hampton Court - it just gave me the chills! If you're into Henry 8th, the 6 wives and all that executions and intrigue of that Tudor period, you just have to come to Hampton Court! I also went up to the 69th-storey of the Shard - after the Shard, the viewing galleries of Tate Modern and the Sky Garden pale miserably in comparison (both free; they are just not that tall). I also had the hellish workout that is St. Paul's Cathedral (those who've been would know what I mean). I stood in line and queued for 40 mins to enter the Churchill War Rooms (at the back of the street just next to 10 Downing Street) - the museum portion of this made it all worthwhile. I also used my LP for the 1-day hop-on-hop-off bus tour - there is no way I'm going to walk all over Mayfair/Oxford Circus/Picadilly Circus, etc. And I haven't even started on the 2 days I spent on the attractions that are on both banks of the Thames!

For those who are visiting London (only) for 6-7 days. I encourage you to buy the discounted 6-day pass, which I paid £139 for. In my 6 days there I went to 17 attractions covered by the London Pass. These 17 attractions would have cost me £295 in total if I purchased ticket at the door. FYI, the London Pass does not include 1 ride of the Eye, Buckingham Palace suites tour and Mdm Tussaud's - info as of 01 June 2019.

@RuggerDez

SO...between my wife and I we paid ~$500 for the 6-day pass and - in our experience - was a WASTE of MONEY. Why? Like you, we wanted to see all main sites BUT ALSO famous streets & shopping areas of London - which is not part of the L-pass. We spent more time "experiencing" the London streets than sticking to the London Pass Book of attractions -- of which by the way is kinda limiting b/c it includes attractions that are outside my interpretation of "experiencing" London. It even has many attractions outside of the city (bla). Biggest pass attraction: London Tower (which I would rather have paid up front and not have purchased this pass). Our mistake: purchase the pass online and make the most of it when IN London. Our Recommendation: Look at all London Pass attractions BEFORE YOU BUY. The London Pass site makes everything sound amazing. HOWEVER, once you're in London, you will find yourself going to places that have nothing to do with the L-Pass. In fact, between day-2-3 we forgot we even had the pass. REGETS! and FAST PASS? Does it get you to the front of the line? LOL. during our 9-days in London, every site that took the London Pass said "we don't do that here". REGRETS! Biggest Take-Away: Purchase the Oyster (subway) card! We used that thing like it was our B*TCH. We took the subway EVERYWHERE, and it is easy to use (after day-1 of courser lol). Personality has a lot to do with the London Pass, sure. But, if you are like us where you want to go to x2 places before lunch and x2 places after lunch, then SKIP THIS PASS. Well, at least get the 2-day pass. Don't go all out like we did. REGRETS!
@loveandlondon
4 жыл бұрын
Yup, as I say in the video, you need to do research and understand what the pass includes to see if it's actually worth it for you. The majority of people who say it's not did not do research and planning beforehand, and also, as mentioned, the 1 and 2 day pass requires you to do a LOT in those days for it to make financial sense.

Here is another con of the pass. Illness, transit issues, and other unforeseen uncontrollable variables. Say you get a 3 day pass for a 5 day trip. Once you use the pass for the first time the clock starts and it's only good for consecutive days. Say you use the past for the first day but then on the second day you come down with a bad cold and are slowed down or stuck in bed for two days. I was sick for 2 days of our 5 day trip and I NEVER get sick. I wasn't stuck in bed but there was no way I could have made it to 3 attractions/day on those days. Instead of saving a little money you could end up losing a lot of money. Being sick on a vacation was bad enough.

Wherever you would show paper tickets. You don't need to exchange the pass to get paper ones, I believe most attractions just see the pass and either scan it or just let you in.

I think there’s a difference between sightseeing and actually going into places. If all you want to do is drive by a place, then the pass is only good for the Oyster pass. And not worth it, obviously. If, however, if you want to go into places (The Shard, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle, etc.) then the pass more than pays for itself.

Hey, Jess! This is going to be my first trip to London, I'm really grateful for your videos! I'm thinking about getting a London Pass, but I'm concerned about availability. Mainly I want to get it to save money on different attractions, but I noticed that Buckingham Palace is only available 2 out of the 5 days that I'm going to be in the city. Since I wouldn't have to book ahead of time, does that mean I can visit anytime I want with the pass, even though Buckingham's website says that they're booked? I'm not sure if it's better to just book everything separately, so I won't miss out. But that's much more expensive. I'd hate to be turned away if I take my chances with the pass!

There’s a daily threshold on the card. I don’t know what it is for all the different passes. Our 5-day Oyster Pass has 50 pounds on it. So that’s 10 pounds/day. If you don’t use 10 pounds for that day, you save it. If you travel more than 10 pounds on a day, you don’t pay more (it covers an unlimited number of transit rides / day during the length of your pass), but then you’ve obviously used up the money on the card for that day. If you didn’t use the pass at all over the 5 days, you would have that money (50 pounds in my case) to use whenever you’d like. I’m not sure you get a refund for any unused money still on the card afterwards, though. You could sell the card, I suppose.

Hi Jess!! Thank you for the video! I still have doubts about the London Pass, I am going for 10days in December, as my first visit there I want to see the tourists attractions which I´ve been dreaming of. But also walk as a local in that beautiful christmas season! Is it too crowded those days (before christmas) I mean to save time and money with the pass? And if I book with oyster card, if I run out of credit can I still adding it? Please help!

Hi Berenice, I'm not sure about the crowds, I imagine you'd be fine. Only area I'd try to avoid is Oxford Street/Regent Street because everyone's shopping. You can add credit to the Oyster :)

Hi again! I have discovered something that really bothered me about the London Pass in following up on your video, and wondered if your followers are aware of it. I often use the Rick Steves travel books which I have found extremely helpful, and they recommend the original and big bus tours, but when I checked on the London Pass website I discovered that neither of them are covered. It seems restricted to a Gray Line trip that runs less frequently and does not seem to be as popular. This seems very misleading not to mention a waste of money and starting off ones trip on a very bad note. Perhaps you could let your followers know about this nasty little trick so that nobody gets fooled as we almost did. Best wishes, David

Do you know generally how often the London Pass goes on sale? I saw their price increase alert for February. It’s 15-20% off the 6/10 day pass right now, but I didn’t know if I should maybe hold off for a better sale? I know it was just 40% off so I didn’t know if they would have another sale before the price increase. We will be there for 12 Days in July so I’m thinking we might want the pass to help save some money, but I’m not sure yet! Trying to figure out if I should spend some time figuring that out ASAP as the current deal ends Wednesday, or if I could maybe take another week or two.

Hey Rebecca! The sales are always the same and won't get better than that. They can happen fairly often but I'm not sure if it they would have another one before the price increase. My suggestion is to buy now, just in case. Also, have a look at the London Explorer Pass just to see if one will suit your needs better than the other, here's my comprehensive blog post on the pros/cons and how it works: loveandlondon.com/london-explorer-pass-worth/ Hope that helps!

Thank you for your advice! I went ahead and purchased the 6 day pass for me and my Dad. I know there are the 2-4-1 options, but we are traveling at peak time at the end of July and I was worried a lot of the attractions would have a 2-4-1 blackout dates. With the London pass being on sale and still at 2017 prices we could actually save over $200 even if we don't get to everything on our itinerary those days. Plus we will be there for 12 days so we still have time to do other "must see" items on our list without trying to cram it all in! Seemed worth it to buy now rather than see 2-4-1 options be posted later than we can't use and have to pay way more for the LP then.

It says on the website that I have to redeem the free Bus Tour ticket at one of the Visitor Centre collection points or bus stops ON THE DAY that I plan to use the HOHO ticket. Lovely video! I was in a big dilemma whether to purchase the Pass or not but now I'm clear, thanks to you! I'm going to buy it. Quick question: Is it crowded in the first week of January? Also, I'm trying to book flight tickets right now for Jan but it's showing me exorbitant prices. Do you have any suggestions for that? It would be great. Thanks. xo

Hi Mokshada, I'm glad I could help, so many of my viewers are just like you so I wanted to clear it all up and help you all decide whether you should get it or not. First week of Jan shouldn't be too bad at all, January is typically a very quiet month. I'm surprised that you're finding very high prices for Jan as the last few weeks of Jan traditionally have the lowest flight prices of the year. If you're searching for the first week, try doing one or more weeks later and see the difference in price.

When you buy the explorer pass, and use the hop on hop off, is it good for just 24 hours? My husband and I when we travel anywhere, we always take this tour first to get familiarized with the city the first day. But they are so convinient to go back to the attractions on them, so i cas wondering if we want to use it 2 days, should we buy a pass considering it 2 attractions (one each day) plus all the others (london eye, river boats, etc?) ALso we are traveling with a baby (14 months) we will be "slow pace" and not sure how our days will be. Do you have any attractions that you definitely suggest we try with a very active baby boy who just learned to walk??

The hop-on hop-off pass is good for one day. It’s also just for one specific bus loop / route around the city. It’s not a regular transit bus. (Look up the pass online to see the route.) You can go around the loop as many times as you want. It would take a long time to go around, though! (We went half way around when we went.) Nice to sit on the open upper-deck of the bus on a nice day. I don’t think you’d need it more than one day. Don’t forget you can get an Oyster card with the pass which gives you unlimited transit bus and “underground” transit travel during the length of your pass.
