I’ve been using the Futur on setting 3 for around 8 years. I love it, and it still looks like new. The Futur is a heavier razor, which means that you need to let the razor do the work and don’t use a lot of hand pressure.

@@GregTardif Yes, of course some razors aren’t for everyone. I always tell men to start with a less expensive razor, and if that doesn’t work for them then consider a more expensive razor. I started out double edge shaving with a Gillette razor that my father used 50 years ago. I still have it as a keepsake, but the Futur gives me a better shave. @@GregTardif Indeed, this one is not a daily driver. If you like the shape of Merkur Futur, check out this one: ''Hone 15''. It seems to be a mild razor and could do the job for a daily driver. It is a bit pricey though. Alternatively, there are plenty good and mild razors out there, such as the Mühle r89. PS: in case the Futur is hard for your skin, try some pre-shave cream before shaving. Maybe would help. After years of shaving without that, I tried a week ago and helps (no burns or irritation). Enjoy!

I've been shaving with my Merkur futur for 5 years now. I was still newish when I started. I felt there was a massive learning curve with it. Didn't realize it could be the razor however I love this razor now. Now that I'm used to it, the very light pressure with Feather blades, I'm now shaving on setting 4. Switching to shave soap has also helped. Very interesting to hear another perspective on this razor, thanks! Also to add; I have sensitive skin on my neck especially. Typically I shave with 4 - 7 days growth. Futur will chew through the 7 day growth on me. I always two pass shave.

What's even more funny is I bought my Futur on Ebay years ago, and took years to realize the "adjustment" had cycled over.... it read 1-6, but was effectively 7-12. Was better after fixing, but anything above 2 is risky. But it's still my preferred razor if I go 6+ days without shaving.

I agree with Jason. A lot of people don’t go over setting 1 or 2, but I can let my beard go for several weeks and shave it off with a higher setting on this razor. It still clogs some with that much growth, but some decent whisks or twists in standing hot water clean it out nicely. I’m definitely a 1 pass shaver and I let the weight of this razor do all the work.

Did you by any chance disassemble the razor after that first shave? I did when I first bought it because I'd watched a video about how to wash it. It's tricky to put back together again and if you do it incorrectly it's vicious. My skin is so sensitive that I get weepers with the Henson. I've also used the Jagger DE89BL, the Rockwell, and the King C. Gillette, and for some reason the potato peeler gives me the best shave, although if I'm not being mindful of what I'm doing, it punishes me. If you reassemble it and don't put back the plate correctly, or if you don't press down enough on the plate and twist the handle back on all the way, you'll be peeling off skin.

I enjoyed your viewpoints & subjective review. I was just gifted a Merkur Futur. I had almost bought one when I started DE few months back but saw guys saying it’s aggressive. I was reluctant to try it 😂😂 I have a very sensitive neckline & DE shaving has been a learning curve for me for sure! Anyways I tried the Futur with my go to smooth blade choice of lord platinum. on setting #1 I loved the shave. Smooth & no knicks at all. I found it more forgiving then my muhle R89 on #1 while also being more efficient. I since tried 1.5 & with 7 days growth on setting #2. That’s PLENTY aggressive for me! Mowed down that 7 days like nothing. Guys using these Futur on #6 is utterly insane to me.😮😮 Honestly I’ve not found a soap/creme I like. They all are very face drying and not slick at all IMHO. I’ve tried TOBS sensitive, cella, Proraso red in tube, razorock, chiseled face. I get best lather with proraso or cella but wow is my face dry AF after. Even with Proraso pre shave not good shaves. Thus far king of shaves gel or cremo are superior for my sensitive neck as they are vastly slicker then any cream or soap I’ve tried. Yes they don’t lather so there’s no fun factor. I ordered a sterling sampler pack. I have high hopes….

Hi there , if is to aggressive the Merkur future try to dial down , by squeze very well top plate and bottom plate betwen finger and try to screw down the handle , if does not work to tight it down not to be a play betwen botom plate and Handel you have to turn at 180 degrees the middle plate and then try again to screw down the handle untill you don't have a play betwen botom plate and handel ....that should do make future less aggressive . I had see here a review about it I will try to pass the link ,hope that will help someone

I just bought this as my first safety razor, and tried it out today for the first time, and it was the worse experience ever! It was so dull, it got cought up in my hair, and it was bouncing over my skin. I started out at number one, and worked my way up to 6, but it was no difference. I used a Derby Extra blade in it, and then I changed it out for a really sharp Feather, but it was just the same. I had to go over the same area over and over again......while with my old Gillette Mach 3, its so i easy.....it just glides over the skin, and Im smooth as a baby. I also bought some Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood, and o boy how that sucked! It dried out almost instantly.....I had to ad water all the time, for it to not dry out. The Gillette with regular shaving foam is 100 times better. What a waste of money!

@@NiklasMalmqvist i don't know what you mean by dull. DE razor blades are MUCH sharper than cartridge razor blades. in fact, the multi blade cartridge razors are intention a bit dull, the first blade has to pull on the hair, not cut cleanly through it, because it's designed to pull the hair out of the follicle a small amount, and the rest of the blades come after to finish cutting the raised hair, and after the cut hair will go back down into the follicle. which is how ingrown hairs happen with cartridge razors. whereas a safety razor is a single blade that slices clean through the hair without tugging and pulling. Maybe you had bad blades, or used poor technique. I think it's ridiculous how people are blaming the shaving soap, as if you MUST use a brush to swirl and build lather in order to shave- which is not true. I use a safety razor and i don't use a brush. I use store bought shave creams and my hands to apply. maybe try a different smaller safety razor, I don't own a futur, but it looks heavy and bulky, and maybe the weight adds to the aggressiveness. most of us have more than one safety razor. I had 6, but I gave two of mine to my two brothers so I have 4 different ones now- Not that I constantly switch between them, I just think it's neat to try out more than one.
@NiklasMalmqvist

@@stephenmartinez1 I tried this safety razor 5 times, and with 3 different blades, and its very dull compared to a cartridge. As I said....it gets stuck in my hair.....it bounces over my skin, and I have to go over the same area over and over again. With a new Mach 3 blade, its like cutting through butter. For me, the safety razor is painful.....you have to be very careful not to cut yourself, and it takes forever to shave compared to a cartridge. The only positive is that the blades are cheaper.
