I don't believe this rig is supposed to reflect a smooth motion when walking through the woods. A gimbal would be more suited for that but for shots that require a bit of movement without walking, I do believe the shoulder rigs are great. I don't think the price has to do with anything about the performance. Comparing this to a gimbal doesn't make sense. It's like you are comparing a sports car to a 4x4, they are used for two different things. This rig is around $150 and is by far the cheapest rig out there compared to others that go well into the THOUSANDS. The only negative thing you had to say was about it not being as steady as a gimbal... Did you have anything malfunction or break? I feel this isn't really an honest review of the products "intended" use. IMO

Hi Barret, We appreciate your feedback and opinion. Ultimately for us, you can get gimbals for similar prices now, and we feel they offer a lot more, in terms of flexibility for filmmaking. For example, you mention shots that require a bit of movement, well gimbals can still provide this, as well as the added bonus of smoother shots, where more movement is required. Therefore, this is why we chose to reference and compare them with this shoulder rig. We do understand that for some people they may prefer a rig for certain shots, but for us, in terms of the bigger picture, we still feel that a gimbal would be a smarter investment overall. Hopefully this helps explain our reasoning and thought process behind the comparisons.

Shoulder mounts record a different look-more of a cinéma vérité style with imperfect camera moves. It unveils truth. Gimbals (or stabilizers) on the other hand smoothen things out… They create "polish" "gloss" and "perfection." Both are valuable tools in the director's arsenal. :)

I'm sorry I had to negative rep you I incorporate Gimbels and stabilizes and there is a need for that but it's also very tiring To do prolong shots. I am considering purchasing a shoulder mount for prolonged shoots. the problem with your review is that you want this to be a stabilizer or a gimbal which it's not. it's like comparing apples to oranges it's for a totally different purpose This equipment does a totally different job it's not really meant to stabilize shots while moving it's supposed to be done from a fixed position

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us! We appreciate that typically a shoulder mount will never be as smooth or get you the same type of shots as a gimbal, and that they are typically used for more prolonged shooting instead. However in our opinion for the price point, a gimbal offers far more flexibility in terms of the smoothness, creativity and shots you can get with them. Additionally, if you are shooting from a fixed period for a prolonged period of time, then a tripod can do the same job, whilst completely removing the tiring aspect of holding the camera and rig. Of course some people will prefer a shoulder rig still, and it may be the right option for you and your filmmaking. But for us and the bigger picture, we believe that a gimbal is a smarter investment for those looking to try and take their filmmaking to the next stage. I hope this helps to explain our choice to compare them better! Thanks, Kellen

@@RedSkyMedia You do not know what you are talking about. It's mind boggling. Shoulder rigs are NOT made to be stable. It's like, the whole point... to add dynamism. You want a still shot ? Tripod. You want a smooth stabilized shot ? Gimbal or steadicam. You want a dynamic shot ? Shoulder rig. Quit the bs

I bought this kit a while ago and still use parts of it on every shoot. It’s heavily modified now with loads of smallrig and Tilta components along with a Tilta wireless follow focus system that lets me adjust focus in the handles. It’s a nice starter rig and you can use it as a base and keep building on it. To all of the other comments, yes, you can nail moving shots with a shoulder rig. Gives off a more natural feeling to the footage than a gimbal, but you can get it to be nicely stable. There is a learning curve, but it works.

Nice one ! I don’t really get the point of the matt box if you can’t slide filters into it

For sure, I think it is simply there to minimise any glare, but in our opinion it is definitely just a cheap and not very good extra sadly.

Shoulder rigs are for when you are sitting on one knee or when you are standing and recording conversation, you use gimbal for moving shots. Coming from a semi pro filmmaker that has used this rig along with a gimbal on same scenes and they work beautifully together. If only they use a quick mount system

Shoulder rigs are not stabilizers. They're used as an quick shooting alternative to tripod shots. They're meant for quick setups and are great for one camera dialog scenes.

I have something similar but I have not purchase the follow focus yet. My question: The should rig itself requires user to use both hands to hold the rig. Wouldn't that be inconvenience to operate the follow focus at the same time?
@RedSkyMedia

Unfortunately you are correct, it is certainly inconvenient, and this is also part of the reason as to why it lacks stability when using the follow focus system and the rig.

For best results it´s better if another person use the follow focus while you are recording. I did it that way in a short film and the result was so good.
