Honestly, what Nissan needs to do is move to CCS1 DC fast charging for the US market and add a thermal management system for the battery and they have a winner. All the other stuff are good refresh updates. My neighbor has one and it's a very good EV. With the way prices are going, they can easily grab a chunk of the EV market share again.

You are right on that, this gentleman mentioned a lot of amenities, but that Thermal Management system for the battery is for me a deal killer- no Thermal Management system, not buying it. That was the reason that despite being in the market longer than Tesla, I got more money and bought a Tesla P85D in 2014, and after almost 8 years and more than 200k miles on it, still no problems at all. Wish NISSAN could do larger, better equipped vehicles because I miss the brand. I grew up with a Datsun 240 Z from 1971.........

@@jorgerobles628 - It's important to understand that for most owners the Leaf WILL NOT NEED active cooling of the battery pack. Their batteries will last just as long without it. Liquid cooling is essential for those owners that push the envelope of what the Leaf was designed to do. Excessive heat in the battery core is what degrades these batteries. Owners that subject their Leaf to scenarios that are known to drive up battery core temperatures are the only people that need liquid cooling. Owners that drive for extended periods above 80 mph will see a significant rise in battery temperature. Owners that frequently use high power public (HVDC) chargers will see a significant rise while charging. Owners that engage in both of these activities during essentially the same period (extended periods of high speed driving interrupted by frequent stops at public HVDC chargers), will see the core temperatures pushed into the red zone. Done occasionally won't be an issue but some owners were doing this every day. Now add to this scenario high ambient temperatures (think Arizona 115F day time highs), and these owners were literally cooking their batteries every time they drove. Indeed, most of the cases of premature capacity loss were in Arizona and other southern/southwest hot spots where owners admitted to frequent use of public HVDC chargers. There are over a half million Leafs around the world and the vast majority of them have not experienced excessive battery capacity loss. The beauty of the Leaf is that for owners that drive normally, charge at home (do not use public HVDC chargers), and live in more temperate regions, the Leaf's air cooled batteries offer less complexity, less weight and less cost to maintain while lasting just as long. Keep in mind that the early Leaf got a lot of undeserved bad press due largely to the battery being so small and how the BMS computer allowed it to be charged. At 24kWh the early Leaf battery packs were very small which necessitated much more frequent charging in order to get any usefulness out of the vehicle. With only 75-85 miles of range many owners needed to charge them two or more times every day. The early battery packs were only good for 750-1000 charge cycles under normal circumstances which when charged multiple times per day, were quickly used up often within two or three years. With EV batteries SIZE MATTERS. The latest EV's with 60kWh and larger battery packs may only need to be charged once a week which GREATLY extends battery life. Keep in mind that that before 2012 the Leaf BMS computer provided access to the battery's full 24kWh capacity allowing for a true 100% full charge, something we now know is bad for Li-ion batteries. The BMS computer in modern EV's won't allow true 100% charging. Although the dash gauge shows 100%, in reality the battery is only being charged to 90%-95% of of its full capacity.

Manufacturers could easily do bidirectional with CCS (Ford F-150 Lightning is), they just don't want to add the functionality. Do you use your Chademo for bidirectional? Given that most Leaf buyers are buying it because it is cheap, I'd venture to guess most owners are not investing $$ into their home infrastructure which would be necessary for V2H; it basically increases the cost of the system (Car + V2H/charging) by $5-10k. I agree with you on battery care. DCFC and charging to 100% and leaving it plugged in is what kills the battery quicker. It's smart to have the charge port In the front of the car. Those wheels I'm totally digging and that blue stitching is dynamite. The new Nissan badge illumated looks killer on the leaf. However, they're a couple of zonks that maybe contribute to Nissan lowering the price: Zonk 1: too much gloss black on the front fascia in my opinion. It's near the charge port door so you might get fingerprints on it. Zonk 2: No AC or back pocket for the backseat passengers. Zonk 3: Think you're knees are little too high Joe. I've had two Leaf's over the past 9 years. Both 1st Gen. The one I have now is the 30Kw. It is a great grocery getter. 100 miles of range and we park it in the garage to charge. Nissan, however blew it with the new Leaf. It kind reminds me of a compliance car. They could have upgraded the charging to CCS which would have made it possible for road tripping. I mean really, still with an air-cooled battery? They would have had a winner if they had done those two changes. But I think it was a stop gap measure to get them to the new Ariya. Too bad, they could have had a real winner. Now is the time to keep an eye on this car for falling prices and great incentives. A few years back you could have gotten into a new Fiat 500 EV on a lease for $87 a month because they couldn't sell them. Who knows, the Leaf may become a real bargain in the near future too!

Now I'm shopping and it looks like it's going to come down to 2023 LEAF and the 2023 Kona EV (no specs yet but soon I hope). Some random thoughts . . . 1 - Not a fan that Nissan dropped the SL trim 2 - I LOVE the redesigned exterior and the wheels 3 - Interior is really no different than my 2018. Defines stale. 4 - CHAdeMO should have been swapped out years ago. If Hyundai keeps prices about the same for the 2023 Kona EV Ltd, for an extra $5,200 this is what it will have over the 2023 LEAF SV: 1 - Limited Trim will meet/exceed the old SL trim that Nissan dropped 2 - 43 more miles of estimated range 3 - CCS charging 4 - Liquid cooled battery 5 - 10.25 inch infotainment 6 - More cargo and leg room 7 - More torque 8 - No nasty step up when you fold down the back seats (did you notice they took out the black Bose subwoofer or whatever it was?) I'm hoping Hyundai adds a 360 camera view but other then that, it seems like the Kona EV Ltd is putting a beat down on the LEAF SV for an extra $5k.

Great review! I currently drive the 2018 version as a company car. I live in the Netherlands so things are bit different here. With the 62kwh battery, I would fast charge like once a month. Yes chademo is dying, but they are still offered. The 2023 has way more trim levels. I’m the Netherlands they even have a tax-friendly model, called the “Business Executive plus”. It’s like the Tecna trim though.. cheaper. That and the 1 phase charging (no need for new 3 phase charge box so that saves a lot too) makes the Leaf at least in the Netherlands a great option. Last note on the range displayed in the video. It is adaptive and probably the car hasn’t driven a lot. I do not expect any increase of the range over the 2018 version. After 80K km the battery still has a full bar. Since my trips do not exceed 300km, rapid gate was never a concern. The telescopic steering wheel is definitely new. I do hope the European erosion has the better plastics. I am pretty sure we don’t have the powered seats though. All in all great unpretentious car. I do have to comment on “great first EV” remarks. Quite a few detail differences from the European version, such as a normal button for the Eco mode instead of the little lever shown in this US version. We have the 2022 model in the UK, that looks a lot like the 2023 model described here, and there are 3 variants here, with 2 battery sizes (42 kwh and 62kwh) per variant: The base model is the Acenta, with the mid-range one being the N-Connecta and the top of the range one being theTekna, which has lots of top spec driving assists such as self park. We have the e+ N-Connecta, with a range of about 245 miles and lots of nice assists such as: all-around parking cameras with 3 display modes on the screen for different situations; adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. We picked the Nissan Leaf because the interior is the most like a normal car, not trying to look like a spaceship with a huge touchscreen running everything. I like having the physical buttons for everything you need while driving, instead of having to accurately manipulate sliders and sub menus on a touch screen. I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and feel for the control I need. I like the touchscreen for all the non-moving controls though. Great value, a decent looking car, with great features: the only thing I don't like on it is the US style foot operated parking brake instead of a hand lever (or console button for the electronic type I've had on previous cars).

But with a hybrid you'll still have all the routine maintenance and points of wear, tear and failure that a typical ICE vehicle has. A pure EV (BEV) has no accessory or serpentine belts, none of the associated pumps or pulleys, no alternator, no power steering pump, no mechanical water pump, no high temperature high pressure engine coolant system, no timing belts, no timing chains or timing gears, no camshaft, no valves or valve guides, no tappets, no rocker arms, no push rods, no pistons, no connecting rods, no rod bearings, no spark plugs, no coil packs, no ignition control modules, no fuel injectors, no fuel rail, no fuel pump, no fuel filter, no fuel pressure regulator, no fuel injection control module, no MAF sensor, no O2 sensors, no PCV valve, no head gaskets, no front and rear engine oil seals, no oil pan gasket, no valve cover gaskets, no transmission, no exhaust pipes, no mufflers, no catalytic converters, NO EMISSIONS TESTING EVER, no need to service the brakes every 50k miles (EVs use regen which helps the brakes last far longer than on an ICE).

Totally agree with Deveneaux Nissan must immediately move away from chademo here in Europe the chademo charging stations tender to disappear and having a car you can only charge at home is a real deal brake also an armrest at the back and a slight bigger armrest in the front wouldn’t ruin the company and make it much better. I really like the leaf but without at least a modern plug 🔌 it’s not a option. And if they add a thermal management they wold have a little winer capable of selling a lot! I’m interested in the changing technology. My wife and I have owned a 2015 Leaf for 5.5 years and have driven 30,000 miles in it. It’s range was 84 miles when new, less now. But as a second car it does all the workhorse things we need: to work and back, to the store and back, etc. We don’t actually need the extra range, but if we only had one car a range of 250-300 miles would be imperative! I agree with the comment about CCS charging and a battery management system. I have more things to say about electric cars on my channel: Five Minutes With Dr. Know.

On first look this is a mild update to the Leaf. To me that's a good thing because it keeps the price down. Leafs aren't meant to compete with high ticket cars. I have a 2015 24kwh Leaf and these things are really well built. I was surprised to see they are sticking with Chademo charging. Chademo is a great system and lead the world in Vehicle To Grid capability which is going to be very important in the years to come. But, there is a move to reduce support among charging networks. It's like they've forgotten it was until recently the biggest selling EV in the world. There's lots of them out there and they aren't retiring for some years yet. Also, why is this guy obsessed with how much food you can stick in any given storage space?

This is my car. Tho mine is the 2019-2020 version. I am a city person, New York City, and this car is the perfect pick, a list for me. I do love the nice new age look that Nissan is bringing to the leaf, but I do agree with you about the harness of some of the materials, especially on the doors and the lack of arm rest on the back and front seats. But, as a female New Yorker, this car is perfect, I am a 5" 4', so legg room is fine by me. I am however, sorry for you and my nephews, whom are on the six feet range, as the car may be a little cramp for you and them, but they have their own vehicles. The Leaf is mine! For the cargo space. Is fine by me, what I mostly do, besides work, is shopping and lundry, which doesn't take extra room. So, for my take, as a female living in a large city like NYC, living on a budget, the Nissan Leaf is my recommendation. Thank you so much for taking the time to do an appreciation on the Leaf as you said in the video, the Nissan Leaf has been around for ten years, even before electric vehicles were a thing, but it has always been an under dog, even among its own brand, but it has always preformed well and has surprised those who took up the driver seat, with is simple steady capabilities. I am happy to see that Nissan is learning on the road and are slowly updating the Leaf but are sticking to what does works. Thank you for showing us the new 2022-2023 Leaft I am very much enjoyed it, I 'll be looking forward to your next reviews.

I'm going to be looking into the purchase of an electric vehicle sooner or later and am looking for a low-cost option. This video, plus Consumer Reports thumbs positive reporting on same, makes this look to be a very attractive option. The only thing I'd have liked to have seen or, rather, heard discussed in your video is a detailed breakdown of the DIFFERENCE between the two trim levels. Also, I think it would be helpful to note that the door covering the charging port can be opened independently of the front hood. You opened the door of the charging port but did so while the trunk was open and never mentioned whether or not they can be opened independent of each other. Thanks for the otherwise outstanding video...
