Lion City Sailors and other Singapore clubs need more games not just from the league or the cup but also regional and international club competition. This Shopee Cup is a fantastic idea because it gave lots of players game time and match fitness and this is what every fans complain about when we only had the league for player's game time. Having more game time exposure is way better than play in your league week in, week out only... also give younger players more game time and experience.

All this talk of youth footballers trying to balance/prioritize football, studies etc. in this and recent episodes just reminded me of a female footballer Nadia Nadim. She fled Afghanistan to Denmark (and represented Denmark in various major tournaments), pursued a footballing career in Europe and the US, and while playing in USA, attended medical school remotely, successfully qualifying as a reconstructive surgeon Suggests that one could achieve both football and academic excellence without one suffering at the expense of the other, but it'll take great time management skills and a good amount of determination (think our youth players are up for it?)

Incidentally, the discussion of having too many games for a player/team is mentioned in the youth league and the professional setup (pro-club). These types of challenges may be mitigated by the depth of squad / rotation of players and demands better planning from our team managers/coaches from both the youth and senior teams. I can only encourage this as it only makes the coaching job/ managing job to be taken more seriously, and this is one part where football globally has evolved, the challenges are different now. Also it gives more opportunity for the senior teams to feature youth players for cup competitions (traditionally, this is where they shine). Let us look forward to more for Nathan Mao (s), and I cannot see it as a negative for our local football. 😀😀😀

The shopee cup might seem like a good idea at start but it makes the calendar way more harsh for multiple clups with this competition clubs from like Malaysia and Thailand will have to compete in 4/5 different tournaments, a club JDT will have to play the MSL, the Malay FA cup, the MSL league Cup, if qualified the AFC champions league and with the shopee cup that makes 5 tournaments either they will send their B/C team to gain more experience ou is going to be super exhausting for the main player of the A squad

@@thetravellingbloke2992 the Arab champions cup is more like a pre season tournament that last one month and half the shopee cup will work on a 14 club league sistem with a 40 game season it’s a stupid design they should do it like the Arab champions cup do it more like a pre seasons thing since the AFC CL has change its season period to be similar to the UEFA CL and leagues in Asia are adjusting to the change just like Singapore that is changing season format to be similar tu Europe starting the same time as European leagues

Hi Guys, Good discussion, keep it up and yes with the number of different topics to discuss about, it is only evident as mentioned before, the up-coming local season for Singapore football is going to be very exciting and what better time then now for fans to get behind your local team. Many more topics are going to be discussed by your team and I look forward to tuning into them. Maybe part 2 only is not going to be enough. Maybe with an additional sponsor, a dedicated episode, once a week for round up of local football? 😀😀😀

Love listening to you guys as always. 1. I feel shoppe cup is a good start but we still need to tie up with AFC to gain more tractions for sponsors. But any form of new competition is way welcome as compared to the current SG cup competition we have. 2. Would like to have your take on the new SPL season. I have been commenting on the need for an away and home fixture list with teams attached to their respective neighborhood communities. Time and time again, we have been going backwards in this. We have 4 teams sharing the same stadium for 4 rounds. a. Are the rest of the stadiums in SG not available? b. Pitch conditions so dire that we cannot utilize them? c. Too many stakeholders involved that the easiest way is to place all teams into one stadium? 3. We are trying to re-energize youth football but we are still failing in the fundamentals, which is the need to restructure the purpose of SPL. Lack of sponsorships should not be the sole reason for the league to be less competitive or weaker fan engagement. It’s the smallest things that counts.

hi, trying to helpby answering your questions:- a. Are the rest of the stadiums in SG not available? It is not that they are not available - they are to be VAR compliant…. Also the other stadiums are used for other competitions like youth league, women’s league, etc. Eventually all stadiums will be reno like OTH, but we need to allow for time… only brand-new Stadium on the cards is Punggol I think…. b. Pitch conditions so dire that we cannot utilize them? - Well agree or not, with the amount of usage of all our outdoor fields, along with our weather conditions, we cannot afford to have natural grass. We have to push towards artificial grass. The good news is that there is now a new technology of hybrid artificial grass intertwined with natural grass… and for this to happen, it’s a huge cost, so they rather do it when the stadium is renovated. - these are taxpayers’ money - have to spend prudently. c. Too many stakeholders involved that the easiest way is to place all teams into one stadium? I believe strongly that you are looking at Albirex Niigata’s setup. Which is not the case for the rest of our teams. Albeirex (still waiting for name change - season starting soon) is functioning (in my view) - like a consortium of Japanese influenced / connected entities, and there is nothing wrong in it. With the low amount of R.O.I with investments - it is business acumen, in what we are dealing with in the current climate - to have ‘big consortiums’ backing each of the our SPL teams. 3. We are trying to re-energize youth football but we are still failing in the fundamentals, which is the need to restructure the purpose of SPL. Lack of sponsorships should not be the sole reason for the league to be less competitive or weaker fan engagement. It’s the smallest things that counts. Agree, but I feel instead of expecting someone (either the governing body or the club themselves) to do something about it, we as fans should initiate support group activities. Something that works and I learnt in recent times…. You first step is to support your club unconditionally. Once you have expectations for returns…you end up being disheartened by every bad decision. 😀😀😀

Just saying, but our FAS would need a way better marketing strategy. I know filling out 20K fans in the National Stadium may seem like a good thing but remember that our stadium can fit 55k in it. We seem to use it more as a concert venue than what it was actually built for. Why can't we have the days of a fully packed out National Stadium that we can be proud of. Singapore is kinda like the Man City of SEA, lots of money, good enough players (?), can't fill the stadium. The only diff is is that we're quite bad at football. $30 tickets to matches are a huge turn off for us fans coz it feels more like a big purchase rather then a fun outing, coupled with the fact that we know paying $30 won't guarantee us seeing our team win. On a side note, Ogura is heading in the right track, just that we really need to seperate ourselves and stop playing 5 at the back on the regular. We need more passion and more fight in our players. That China draw was a glimmer of hope, but we're still a long way away. Even from our neighbours.

Its ok that jdt sits out because they have somewhat out grown the asean landscape and they have bigger ambitions. This shoppee cup thing will be great for i) the next tier of teams in leagues where 1 team has been so dominant, ie msia and ii) teams from lesser nations (including singapore) where any additional exposure to regional competition will help with player devt and any additonal revenue will come in handy

I think having a 4th cup is good it gives more games to ASEAN/SG club(s). Here is the thing it is not a new model. Take a look at the Arab world, they have the arab champions Cup which the teams take seriously. There is NO qualification of AFC just a $6m prize for the winner yet the Arab nations all fight for it. Clubs in Saudi have 4 competitions to play. Saudi League, kings Cup, AFC, and Arab Champions Cup (and next season FIFA Club World Cup). All we need is good prize money and give it a go. Even if this wasn't a top-tier tournament it would be good for our other SG clubs like Hougang, Balestier or Geylang to have this chance of away days,. This is overall good for the ASEAN teams since they finally have a confederation club tournament. (with the failure of ASEAN super league.) This will just help with the growth and marketing of football in ASEAN.

Is this Mickey Mouse Shopee cup officially recognised at AFC level? If it doesn't, it is reeking the looks of calefare Curry Puff Cup tbh. JDT ain't sending their team over. Downhill for a start. And are we pinning overhyped hopes that the Thai League will send their teams over and to see the likes of the Fandi 1 and Fandi 2 come to play at the competition? Prospects look fading. This looks more suited for a pre-season tournament rather than smacked right in the middle of a relatively crowded domestic calendar + AFC-level competition. And are the squad size able to cope with the chase with a treble, quadruple etc?

I actually like that JDT isn’t playing in the ASEAN Club Championship. This in its nature is a “third tier” championship. Even if its a different federation organizing it. Doesn’t mean champions need to be in it. I think it serves a better purpose of incentivising league competitiveness. So for Malaysia, there is now ACLE, ACL2 and ACC to play for. If JDT takes two competitions, it’ll deprive another team of the spot. For Singapore, Lion City Sailors may be the best team for it as they’re the best resourced team, way ahead of the next team. For them that may be the best course. But for Malaysia, Terengganu and KL City FC has a lot of resources and they can be competitive. As for the value of the league, its still early days. Maybe one day they can work out a deal with AFC to get the winner of the ACC at least a prelimanary round spot in the ACL2.

Hey guys love the show but I really need to say that I disagree with that idea that players need to abandon their studies our friends our social life, what Singapore need its just to promote football has way for higher education and you can say that most parents will won’t their kids to go to school near their home like maybe NUS but if your Child has the possibility to gain a athletic scholarship to Universitys in the USA our Canada yo schools like peen State, Call U, Florida our maybe even maybe an IVY like Harvard, Yale our Princeton all this school have football program with player that manage to go pro and play in the MLS our in Europe, Inter Milan Tajon Buchanan he left Canada to play for Syracuse University he played their for 3 years got a degree and got Drafted to the MLS by the New England Revolution, if we promote guys like him has an exemple for kids in Singapore of the doors and opportunity’s that football can give more parents will be willing to push their kids in to football
