I've just bought this little radio and your video really is invaluable help because I was a bit lost with just the manual. I'm fairly new to these hand held radios and I needed more help. You have been of great help. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the review! I'm not a ham, but a GMRS/CB/SWL/AM DX/all-around radio geek who just likes to see new radios. Also, I love the T-37 and T-38 in the background. I've noticed them before--I take it you're retired Air Force--I am also. Have a great day!

I received mine too. The lack of macOS programming is limiting at the time. Also, for such a prominent Orange knob I wish it had more multi-function functionality. I wish the A/B switching did not require multi/sub-button presses. Great review though!

The NOAA mode enables a watch mode for the NOAA channel, and will listen for the emergency alert tones, and breaks the squelch when detected..

Maybe that is the way it works and I misunderstood it, I thought in NOAA mode I would be able to hear the NOAA stations - maybe all it does is what you said, keep quiet until the emergency alert.

I'm having trouble with channel scanning. My Baofeng scans all my channels and I can turn them off in Chirp. How do you set up channel scanning in the UV-K5?

Please go over how to manually set up fm stations and how to select each one for listening. The select feature does not seem to work.

I ordered the Anysecu from Amazon, it came with a charging cradle and the usb-c cable, but no mic or earpiece accessories. It works well, but a better antenna really lets it shine. Mine is unusable while charging via usb-c (massive rf noise in the 70cm band), but works fine while charging in the cradle. I also found it fairly easy to program through the keypad. IMHO, a lot of radio for the money.

Hello. This radio is a good product, but in my opinion it has poor reception. Are there any settings in the menu, or with software, to increase the RX gain? (I have the programming cable) (Sorry for not writing English correctly, I use google translate, I'm from Brazil.)

Hi, Romulus, I'm not aware of any way to improve reception from within the radio. There are always drawbacks to these inexpensive radios. Reception quality is a drawback for this model. It's adequate, not exceptional.

I just recieved one to day from China for €19,99 (free shipment), incl a cradle. The speaker is crap and sounds like it's inside a tin can. The rest is okay. for a budget radio. And I updated the firmware to version K5_2.01_26, but i'm what they changed. Oh, and changing the power, offset and TXP setting won't work on the Noaa band as you found out in the video.

Looks like a cool radio. No FCC entry yet. Their RT590 model is the same as the UV K5. The 470 is on Amazon so should be good.

Calibration is not necessary when measuring power output. It is when measuring SWR on this device.

There seems to be a common affinity to listen to the air band by all of us radio hobbyists. No matter if you are an amateur, GMRS or other operator. I hope that Baofeng, Retevis, Radioddity or some other manufacturer can get the aviation band right on a future model. This model is almost unlistenable on the air band. I’ve seen it reviewed on several other KZitem channels and it’s poor on all of them.
@GadgetTalk4U

I agree. It seems like its just an afterthought to be able to list more bands. Aviation transmissions are notoriously bad if you are on the ground and more than a couple of miles away. Transmissions from nearby airborne aircraft are better.

Edited - found out how you use the NOAA feature to actually hear the NOAA audio. Credit to kzitem.info/news/bejne/yZljp519gKGToWU After switching to NOAA with F-5 tap button 1 just under the PTT button and the audio comes through.

Thanks for the add. Yep, that button may change depending on what you program for the Monitor function. Why you'd have to break the squelch using monitor for a strong signal is still a bit of a mystery. Cheers!

I got one via Bangood. After a few days the Menu key stopped working. They offered a partial refund but only if I returned the device to China. I would expect a full refund + postage if I do that. I could just be unlucky but I think the Chinese have a different sense of customer service than is found in Western Countries. Maybe next time I stick with Amazon? I hope you don't mind but here is a video I sent to their technical support. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pI2VmmWkbIF5fKA

Regarding Squelch: Boafeng via CHIRP allows the sensitivity of each squelch level to be adjusted, I could find no CPS equivalent. Maybe it's not needed but your NOAA experience might suggest otherwise. From a programming point of view I found it easier to edit the .cxf file using NotePad++. Its FM performance was fine when it worked. I might try and change one of the side buttons to call it up? I might get another from AMAZON just to satisfy my technical questions about what ought to be: A Darn good piece of kit.

Your results show it is NOT in compliance with FCC regulations. On the bands below 30 MHz, the requirement is that all harmonics and spurs be at least 43 dB below the carrier (-43 dBc). The Quansheng complies with that. But... a different set of requirements applies to radios that operate between 30 MHz and 225 MHz. (That includes the 6 meter, 2 meter, and 1.25 meter ham bands, and to experimental operation on the 4 meter and 8 meter bands that a few hams have authorization for.) The language is a bit complicated, but for handhelds it comes down to requiring that harmonics and spurs be 60 dB down from 25 watts. For a 5 watt handheld that's -53 dBc, and the Quansheng falls short of that by a few dB. It's not an egregious offender -- some older Baofengs are much much worse -- but it's not where it should be. The -40 dBc requirement doesn't kick in until you have a radio with less than 0.25W output. If you were operating the Quansheng at 1W output and got the same harmonic levels as in your test, your result WOULD be compliant (barely) because the harmonics are only required to be below -46 dBc at that power level. In real life it would likely do better because the harmonic output of amplifiers usually increases with higher output power. But... it's possible the radio actually IS compliant and that you did not use the tinySA correctly. You used a 40 dB attenuator with your tinySA, reducing the 5W output of the Quansheng (+37 dBm) to -3 dBm. Although that's within the safe input range of the tinySA, it is not within the range recommended for best performance of the analyzer, which is -25 dBm or less. (I normally aim for -30 dBm, using a step attenuator along with a 30 dB fixed attenuator to get the signal level just right. That gets the signal comfortably into the range of the tinySA while still using most of its dynamic range.) If your input signal is larger the tinySA uses its internal attenuator, which can introduce some distortion and make the signal under test look worse than it actually is. Here is the relevant section of the FCC rules: The mean power of any spurious emission from a station transmitter or external RF power amplifier transmitting on a frequency between 30-225 MHz must be at least 60 dB below the mean power of the fundamental. For a transmitter having a mean power of 25 W or less, the mean power of any spurious emission supplied to the antenna transmission line must not exceed 25 µW and must be at least 40 dB below the mean power of the fundamental emission, but need not be reduced below the power of 10 µW.
