I liked the sound of the UA mic, however that's likely down to the different grille being used changing the FR a bit.I'm sure you could very easily EQ them to sound near identical. They're so close together it's very clear they're almost 100% the same mic.

@sergigahr

every microphone is the sum of all its parts and mechanical implementation. the distance of the capsule to the mic body will change frequency response, the mechanical dampening, the mesh in front of the capsule, the porting at the capsule all contribute as equally as the electronic components. the creation of the cardioid pattern in a dynamic microphone is very dependent on these mechanical factors.

I personally prefer the darker sound of the MV3 over the UA on everything but the acoustic guitar, where that UA was a clear winner. On every other test, the UA came across harsh and gritty. To me, that sounds like I'll be spending more time dialing in corrective EQ to remove that harshness vs adding a little top end to the MV3 (if needed at all) with a high shelf and/or Fresh Air.

@@chrismonaut work went into making a consistent microphone. without getting into too many details there is mechanical issues and in a microphone mechanical inconsistency will lead to large shifts in Freq Res. the two go hand in hand. so ten SD-1's will be more consistent than 10 MV3's and the yield on the manufacturing side for an SD-1 will be higher due to this mechanical improvement. the mesh difference also affected FR.

After watching Bark's (Obscure Mics), you video surprised me. According to his video, the examination of the Music Villa MV-3 did NOT have the rear switches connected. I found this odd. But in his review, he claimed Music Villa explained they intentionally did not hook those up, to save costs. Thus being able to charge less than the Advanced Audio DM-1 (the same microphone). Why your mic had them connected, starts new conspiracy thoughts. Very interesting. Very interesting indeed. As for the value proposition for the SD-1, I think that is subjective. If one is looking for a microphone with this form factor, in this color, that is more than tonally usable, and willing to drop the currency needed, it is worth its costs. Well, currently it is. Who really knows what will pop up in a month or two, haha. As for the MV-3, even at its price point, it doesn't distinguish itself enough, to stand alone for value. It is one thing to copy another popular product. It is quite another to do that, while at the same time offering a desired uniqueness, which makes that product, stand out in the crowd of copycats. One might not be able to instantly identify the Shure sm7b from some of the other copycats (superlux d421). But until Shure releases a white version, this one stands apart. I won't be buying the MV-3. Nor the Advanced Audio DM7. While I will admit, I too considered doing so. I knew, I would never find use one, over my sm7b (or other mics I have). Nor have I heard sound samples that made me think, I would choice them over less expensive mics. I will also admit, I have had the Thoman mic on back order. And I have have my secret, sm7b mini clone, mic. Which is much cheaper, and I find personally more impressive. The Fame mic (I think a rebrand of the alctron bc700) lacks the e.q. switches, and has a terrible windscreen design. But still has a separating, "mini me," characteristic, I find charming. Add the sm7b large windscreen to it, and it really works well.

That makes sense to me. I couldn't hear a difference when the switches were engaged on the MV3 and though maybe the switch was broken, when listening to the audio.

To be honest: I don't know too much about microphones, but I do enjoy watching content about them and I like learning about them. I have noticed that they are 95% the same. Personally, the only difference was that MV3 had a bit more of mid end - making its sound richer and more full but "Quality" sound a bit reduced, or the more modern way of saying it, Muddy. And the SD1 had the default EQ of an already slightly EQ'd mic, making it lack a bit of mid end but gaining the "Quality" sound at the price of ~ -3db of Mids.

Besides the articulation and detail being nicer with the UA SD-1, there is a center mid content that the UA has that is missing from the MV3. It fills out that portion of your voice and the acoustic guitar so that they have more fullness. It's not pronounced but it's definitely there. The SD-1 hands down. For voice over as well. I definitely would prefer the fuller voice with your voice.
