In the wilderness that surrounds Idaho City, the Boise River meanders through the Boise National Forest on its way to Lucky Peak. In this wilderness is the Short Creek Trail, though there's no Short Creek to speak of. Whatever they call it, this trail sure packs a lot into it. Ponderosa pines, wildflowers, creek crossings, side trails, all while walking along side the Boise River. If you want to extend Short Creek Trail you can, with miles more trail to take you deeper into the Pacific Northwest landscape. For those willing to ford Rabbit Creek, a beautiful and solitary hike awaits, with great dispersed camping for the weekend backpacker along the way.
