I was actually debating this with someone. We’re either a shadow republic or a combination of democracy and republic. So I can see now that we’re probably just a combination of the two. Hopefully it stays that way or we evolve into something better.

But it is wrong. Since we are a constitutional republic. That isn’t the same as a republic.

An excellent explanation that is sorely needed.

Our "elected officials" that fail to represent we, the people while getting bloated over our extorted tax dollars should be reminded of this.

If you want to see if the Founding Fathers intended for democracy. Consult Article 4 section 4 of the Constitution, Federalist Paper 10, and James Madison's extensive notes of the Constitutional Convention. James Madison: "The big threat to our rights today is not the government subverting the will of the majority but becoming the mere instrument of this majority".

He also made sure that non-whites, women, and anyone who didn’t own property could never vote. Maybe we shouldn’t rely on that guy for everything and improve things?

@@impolitikfulYou never read Article 5 of the Constitution don't you. They understood completely that as time went by things will change and we want different things. However they also understood that sometimes the things that we want will cripple the Constitutional order and separation of powers, or the proper limits on government power. That's why they designed the Amendment process the way they did. We used the very system they put down in the Constitution to end slavery, give women abd non-whites the vote so on and so forth. The American Founding Fathers were great men. They were not perfect men but they're great men. Because they understood something that too many us today (who likes to think that we know better) don't get. They didn't know everything. They knew they were going to make mistakes but they they developed a system that enables to correct them. They could have used the Philadelphia Convention as an opportunity to empower and embolden themselves, but instead developed a Constitution that a for a large part was faithful to the principles in which they were fighting for. We are extremely fortunate to have had the group of Founding Fathers that the United States had. Not in Revolutionary France, Russia, Cuba, China, Latin America, Etc, could a group like them be reciprocated.

@@impolitikfulThis is due to the idea that we need people who are invested in the country to vote. At the time of the Constitution, non-whites, women and all non-property owners did not have any investment in the country. Once women, and non-whites started to own land we started to allow them to vote since they became invested.
@impolitikful

@@Shtinamin they couldn’t own land or participate in things because they could not vote to change things. Are you saying the connection here?

@@impolitikful Fun fact: Ever since the start of the United States of America there have been instances of women and non-whites voting in elections. Due to specific states providing those rights since it was not mentioned in the US Constitution. And no that’s not how that works. If you don’t own land you couldn’t vote. Back in the day people had a very different way to view others than we do now. Today we see others as equals (since we are all human). Back in the beginning of this great country the average Joe saw non-white and women not as full citizens, thus were not given mention in the US Constitution at the time. Many of the signers and writers of the Declaration and the Constitution wanted to give everyone equal rights but they knew that the majority of the people were not ready to accept this change of mind, attitude and lifestyle. There would be more wars, contention, and many lives lost if things were forced too early.
