Interesting experiment young man- I never had good results burning soft wood pellets so I stick to one brand year after year and I’ve been totally happy with their performance. They are” Country Boy- White Lightning”100% Oak made from the saw dust from a Oak wood flooring plant in Kentucky. 60 lbs will burn for 18 hours and create an ash pile about the size of a White bread sandwich in my burn pot. Thanks again for doing that test,!

I have found that pellet quality varies widely, even in the same brand, from ton to ton, and year to year. I've had Golden Fire that were nearly dust free to bags with about 2 cups of dust. Sometimes they burn clean, sometimes they don't. I've seen variations with Bear Mountain pellets too. I'm still looking for consistent quality. This years winner could be next years disappointment, in my experience.

Somerset are the best. They burn hotter and more complete but are hard to find.

5502M is my model, I bought less than two years ago, from Tractor Supply. ... After viewing this and other Maintenance videos, I was confident I could perform such maintenance. ... The main reason I chose a wood pellet stove was because it is less expensive than a furnace heating unit. ... The reason chose a stove manufactured by US Stove is because I was under the [mistaken] impression this item was manufactured in the United States. Now, I pray everyday, this item does not breakdown when it is dangerously cold outside. ............... I buy ONLY Hardwood wood pellets. At least, that's what the bag labels state. I mix two different brands in the hopper and hope for the best. ... Because, we might get a few feet of snow, install instructions suggested the exhaust pipe go through the exterior wall high enough to keep the end out of snow [and I thought, high enough to not be a burn danger to anyone whom might walk past the exhaust pipe outside]. .,. So far, there has been little ash build up in exhaust pipes.

I don't use wood pellets anymore, I use waxed carton pellets, deliver 12,500 BTU of heat compared to wood pellets at 8,000BTUSo I use less pellets and have more heat and of course, the price of the waxed pellets is way less expensive than wood pellets

I HAVE A U..S. PELLET STOVE AND ONLY BURN ONE KIND OF PELLET........ HARDWOOD PELLETS AND I get very little ash...quality is excellent from year to year..I have used this same pellet brand and I know for a fact there is nothing better, period! SOMMERSET PELLETS.. The setting I use is almost always #1+ or #2.. manual setting, day run only.. my backup is propane and that is VERY EXPENSIVE... THE STOVE PAID FOR ITSELF IN ABOUT 2 YEARS... NO PROBLEMS IF YOU DO THE RIGHT MAINTENANCE.. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT IT....MICHIGAN IS NOT A FORGIVING STATE IN THE WINTER.. SOMETIMES IT'S -40 DEGREES , SOMETIMES IT'S +20 DEGREES.. FOR AT LEAST 3 MONTHS...

If your stove will not burn the pellets, and you get a back up of unburned pellets in the burn pot, you have a dirty stove! Use the vacuum side of an electric leafblower connected to the outside of the pellet vent... do a routine cleaning then use the leaf blower to suck out all the ash your vacuum didn't get out...

“I live in Idaho” tells you everything, people. We can’t GET hardwood pellets in the west !! That said, I agree about Golden Fire, as opposed to most other brands sold at Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, CAL Ranch, and Tractor Supply. They cost more, but they burn hotter, longer, cleaner.

I use PC Pellets that made the Olympus in the video. They also make a Sierra and Cascade brands that are a little better than Olympus. With the brands available in my area (SW Washington State), the PC Pellets burn much hotter and create less ash than others I have tried. And I haven't tried the really cheap ones. With a hotter burn I turn down the feed rate and get as much as 30% more time out of the PC Pellets and a lot less ash. Sold in Lowes, Home Depot and Tractor Supply around here. About $5/bag. Also, if you have a military disability Lowes gives a 10% discount.

You stated stove malfunctioned ? Meaning ? Because of Pellet size ? Bridging ? Burnt self out ? I have noticed that some cheaper brands are not uniform in size Many i have come across are 1/4 to 2 In in length in 1 bag that would cause auger issues or bridging ?
@productreview5051

Stove malfunction is due to the pellets crystallizing in the fire pot due to additives in the pellets and the way it burns

I have found that softwood and hardwood mix works the best. Trying to figure out how to make a twig cutter that will make the twigs the same length as pellets. I have tons of twigs every year. They are as big around as pellets but much longer.

You'll get even hotter and more efficient heat, with less ash if you burn only HARD WOOD pellets.
@JalopyTechnology
7 жыл бұрын
Not so... softwood pellets burns hotter because the softwood contains more lignin and there is more wood compressed into each pellet.
@CJWJR

Shouldn't you be a little more concerned about softwood pellets since they can cause creosote buildup in your chimney/flew?

You are confusing firewood with wood pellets. With firewood you want to stick with hardwood. Just the opposite with pellets where you will get better results with softwood.

Though I have yet to talk to a softwood wood pellet manufacturer, I wonder how they prevent softwood sap from ending up in the softwood pellets. .............

Lotsa random rumors about wood of conifer/deciduous as fuel, mostly without any basis. Pelleting process controls moisture content very accurately. Pitch (resin) of SOME conifers adds fuel value. I'd be more concerned about bark percentage- bark's kinda heavy on salts (ashes).

Sometimes the pellets will crystallize in the bottom of the pot not allowing it to ignite the next bunch of pellets that fall in so you have to clean the crystallized pellets out so that it will ignite the next round they crystallized because they burn too hot
