I'm from the IoM and attending uni in the UK. It's an absolute nightmare filling out forms - for instance, I took my drivers' license into my bank for ID (did not qualify for a student bank account btw, not having lived in the UK). This caused a 20-minute debate between three workers about whether they could or could not accept it as ID as it was neither included nor excluded from the types of ID they could accept. Eventually they took it on the basis that it was an EEA license (which is not even true but I didn't correct them). My student status is neither international nor domestic but a special third status of 'Islands'.

That's cause IOM🇮🇲 is a Crown dependency but that's it. From my understanding it's owned by the crown who is the head of state of the UK🇬🇧 but the two are separate. IOM🇮🇲 British citizens can only reside in the UK🇬🇧 due to the IOM's participation in The common Travel area arrangements along with the countries of England 🏴,Wales 🏴, Scotland 🏴, Ireland 🇮🇪 and the channel Islands. IOM🇮🇲 residents are advised to have travel insurance when visiting the UK🇬🇧 countries and vise versa, but I'm not sure how that works with students as if you're residing in the UK 🇬🇧 for a certain amount of time then you're classed as a resident so NHS healthcare would become free to use. I'm looking forward to visiting the IOM🇮🇲 as I've never been. Hope your studies go well.

It's quite simple. The Isle of Man is not part of the UK and never has been. Our elected Tynwald voted to allow the UK to manage our foreign policy and defence by paying a fee for these services. We also choose to cooperate on all kinds of things. However the Tynwald, as our only elected sovereign parliament since 979 is sovereign we can vote to ditch any or all of these functions democratically.

Put it simply, if the Monarch of the UK was deposed, they would still be Lord of Mann, and own the Channel Islands (as the Duke of Normandy in regard to the Channel Islands, even though she has no territory in Normandy France proper) in addition to being Head of the Commonwealth (Queen of Canada, Australia etc.) So I don't know what title she would be styled as (i.e Lady of Mann, Duchess of Normandy, Head of the Commonwealth). And to further confuse things, would she still be Duke of Lancaster (probably not), would Prince Charles still have his titles? etc.

Scotland has three banks which are permitted to print bank notes that will be recognised as legal currency in the UK. You forgot the Bank of Scotland. Northern Ireland has four banks that have this privilege, and interestingly one of those banks, Danske Bank, is a Danish-owned bank with its headquarters in Copenhagen :P I've only seen a Northern Irish banknote like twice, but living and working in North Yorkshire, Scottish banknotes turn up basically every day. When I worked in Bedford, though, we weren't permitted to accept Scottish or Northern Irish notes without the manager checking them because we almost never saw them (and because Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes are legal currency, but not legal tender, and no-one's trying to settle a debt, they can get away with saying "do you have a Bank of England note?" and be fine on legal grounds).

I am not sure where you got the idea that the population of IOM is shrinking. All statistics I have seen show the opposite. No railways? Please check your info m8.

Also to clear up banknote situation, England and Wales has the central bank (Bank of England) mint all their money, Scotland has two private banks which print money and Northern Ireland has four, all authorised by the Bank of England to print money. If you’re in NI then NI bank notes are most common, with some English ones thrown in (mostly fivers for some reason), there’s no requesting them or anything, an atm in NI will give you NI notes. the coins are the same accords UK but crown dependencies have their own coins, as they technically have their own currency

If it's another country that has the Queen as head of state, why is it not considered an independent country in the same sense that Canada is?

First thing that pops into my mind about Isle of Man is the Isle of Man TT, absolutely bonkers stuff. And they have no national speed limits, which means you can drive as fast as you want on the rural roads

2 months late, but I thought I'd just clear this up slightly, while there is no national speed limit (when you go past the white sign with the diagonal black slash through it you can technically go whatever speed you feel is safe), there are speed limits in the majority of places, even rural roads.
