My Mom's estate/trust just received this letter on Catalina Island. The letter made it sound like just the Island, or select zip codes, were being effected. She passed last year and the house isn't occupied full time anymore so we were toying with the idea of dropping the line but now I think I we'll want to keep it. When I was a kid growing up over there we had actual operators. You'd pick up the handset and hear a friendly voice 'number please'. Those were the days.

Catalina Island was the last place in the country to give up the PBX switchboards. I was a switchboard operator for my high school and I loved it! I still have landline AND a rotary phone. It's a new model that has redial and speakerphone.

There are also still a lot of landlines being used for internet access (yes I know DSL is old school) but other faster means of connecting to the internet are either more expensive, un-needed by some users, or simply not available in some areas.

I think we should keep landlines because of the uncertainty of the cellular use. Not clear and not always there. Especially for home emergency. Until a time when all phone usage is updated and checked for reliability and response. All companies involved should go in as a help the nation stay online communications available. Thank you

landlines no longer exist in south africa; a 'landline' now is a number ported to a SIM card and the user gets a FLLA (fixed line look-alike) unit, which is basically an android-based cellphone with a big aerial. No mobile reception = no 'landlines'.

Maybe there needs to be some kind of State Government support or subsidizing for the landlines? If you look at what happened in NYC (and the entire East Coast) during and after September 11th, landlines proved to be the only reliable telephones. Towers fell. Entire cell service systems overloaded in the emergency. Cell service was not restored until September 14th using 30 Mobile cell towers to do it. California has earthquakes and landslides. Buildings get jostled and fall. The same potential is there, and on a more regular basis.

If AT&T is pushing so much to get rid of landline service, why haven't they upgraded from DSL and fiber to the node in most areas? Such services still require copper wire going to a customer's house. They want to drop landlines because it's not profitable, but don't want to invest in a modern replacement.

"Carrier of last resort" is LITERALLY the definition of an essential service. If something happens, like an earthquake, cellular service WILL be damaged AND overloaded simultaneously. It's not there to be affordable, it's there to save us when the time comes. Maybe AT&T needs to figure out where all the money is going because it's certainly not to their service or customer experience. 😂

The simple fact that 911 uses traditional wired telephone service in Emergency Response Call Centers and not broadband or cellular phone service pretty much says it all. I keep a traditional telephone line coming into my home because every time loose power cellular service in my area goes down because the cell sites only have battery backup with no generator on site to keep them charged and the site running however traditional land line service receives the power to run the telephone from the local central office which always has diesel generator to power them during power outages and I should know I worked 20 plus years working in telecommunications industry

There are a lot of old folks who need their landlines. It isn't easy to learn how to use a cell phone, and some don't have younger people in the family to help. So if they have an issue with the cell phone, they are out of luck. Until cell phone manufacturers put out a cell phone that is as simple as a rotary phone they should not eliminate telephone service.

LMAO...... As a former Phone Company Technician i can say that in areas outside of maybe 10-15 miles of a Major City Center only have Landline Service and Limited Cellphone Service Available which generally operates on about 2-3 miles from a Major Highway Route as Cellphone Towers are Sparsely Situated.... the Main Reason they want to Drop The Service is its a REGULATED SERVICE BY THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION IN CALIFORNIA AND THE FCC. If services are interrupted they are Required to Restore Services in a Certain Amount of Time(24-72 hours) or Incure Fines for Failure to Keep The Network at Certain Level of Readiness. Also Note that a Large percentage of the Internet Service still come over the Landline Copper Network to Residential Customers and Small Businesses. Internet Class Services are Not Regulate Products and Not Subject to the Fines and Penalties of the PUC and FCC...Maintaining the Network cost the Same for Either Product Coming over fhe Same Network

Why not spin off the landline company into a nonprofit and/or integrate it with google voice, and let it give free national service? Its not like most people using cell phones are going to abandon their iphones for an old pots line. You have the worldwide infrastructure, as backup, why drop it? I doubt it will cost more than a few dollars per home to maintain the antiquated system worldwide, and it can be useful too. Just merge the linemen with another related industry function to keep them hired and trained. Btw, in rural South Africa, they did this, but, the fiber networks promised never materialized at the end of it, so many depend on cell service for internet, and have no internet nor landline during power outages, which now happens more frequently correlating with higher inflation over the last 15+ years.
