This pair has been discontinued for years now, which is why it’s so cheap. I think it retailed for $750 back in 2012? I have this pair with the Azur 851A, sounds great to me with an exceptionally large soundstage. I upgraded from $180/pair bookshelf speakers and was pretty happy. Probably won’t go to a more expensive set until I get a house, lol.

It might be a good idea to use an active crossover on such a low crossover point. You could gain both additional sensitivity and even crossover accuracy, especially since a crossover is inside the vocal region.
@dannyrichie9743

You don't gain sensitivity from an active crossover. The real crossover points for the best use of an active crossover is below 80Hz or so.

Actually quite an impressive little design. One might select a full range driver for smoothness with little regard to bass extension, then select a sub woofer to match. One might get away with a 1st order Xover for both if you match drivers well enough. Honestly, I doubt this could be done without crossing over in the vocal region, but I guess anything's possible. IMO, the choppiness above 5KHz is the deal buster for this kind of design. I'd have passed on that driver and kept looking for something smoother. It took me about 10 minutes to find a good $50 4" Markaudio candidate on Madisound. Possibly needing a gentle notch filter between 8-17KHz. But otherwise real smooth throughout. But it's taking me significantly longer to find a suitable 2" or 3" driver.

@@dannyrichie9743 I'm having trouble finding the driver on your web site. But I easily found your specs on the Audiocircle forum. Most impressive for a 2". A bit lower sensitivity for my tastes, tempting me to use 2 of them. But that creates all sorts of problems (as you know). But otherwise, that's exactly the smooth from mid-bass on up I'd be looking for on a project like that. Under "drivers", your site lists "tweeters", "woofers"and "subs", but not the full range. I found the three LGK kits easily - just not the driver itself. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to be not where I would expect to find it.

I guess, while that wide band driver might be less detailed than any decent tweeter it most likely would have much better midrange resolution than any 8" midbass driver.
@Cujobob
2 жыл бұрын
Simply being a wide band driver doesn’t mean it is a good wide band driver. Small drivers can mean less output and a dynamically restricted response. Some of the best midrange response you’ll ever hear can come from a 12” or larger woofer mated to a compression driver in a large waveguide to control the directivity. There are a lots of negatives to using small drivers which is why they’re typically for low playback levels or used in three-way designs,

the frequency response will not change but the performance of the speaker to reproduce that same frequency response will be better.....remember crossovers are filters that cut frequencies between drivers.....I can tell those BMR drivers perform excellent in the low mids / midhigh range up to 20k....and they spread at almost 180 degrees.
@Luke-qs2cg

Simpler crossovers with better parts, yes, allow drivers to sound better, and to phase match better. That said, the difference isn't night and day. It's actually pretty subtle unless you are upgrading from some pretty extremely cheap parts.

@@anaxa4883 the doors are a somewhat leaky semi infinity baffle . Again, cabin gain gives a lot of bass. You can play 3" full ranges inside a car and get bass. As for treble, it'll be reflecting off of surfaces, and probably has a rising response. They can sound surprisingly good considering its a cheap speaker. I'd say you can still get a more refined sound with decent hifi drivers. Also did you listen to your hifi speakers in the car or in your house? @@RennieAsh I can't imagine my small thin corolla 2008 corolla doors have all that much volume. My friend has Polk s55's and they have almost no mid bass kick by comparison to my stock full range cheap paper car speakers. I have the rear speakers in the car turned off. The door speakers are way off axis since they are near your feet and they are all surrounded by carpet just like most of the cars interior so there should be less high frequency reflections than even a standard tile floor house. I listened to all of those mentioned 'hifi' speakers in my apartment off of a Denon 4306 receiver and a parasound 2250 amp on carpeted floors, 9ft ceilings, and I experimented with placement.
