Late Southern Wu Style Taijiquan master Wang Hao Da, disciple of late GM Ma Yuehliang demonstrating small circle Fa Jin! (with GM Ma doing the fast frame, which until he revelaed it finally, many believed it didn't exist because how closely guarded it was).
A few weeks ago, an interesting conversation took place on FB about "Fa Jin" and/or an absence thereof, when it comes to Yang stye Taijiquan vs Wu style. It was a great conversation between a few prominent Taijiquan practitioners but alas, a whole lot more folks who had no clue, were also compelled to throw their respective two cents in, as it is with online conversations into internal martial arts. The subject matter itself is rather deep and very relevant, where many historical sources as well as anecdotes were raised. For all those who asked me what my view was, I'm responding here rather than individually responding or adding to the noise that the original conversation has become. Hope you don't mind 🤗🙏🏼
In a nutshell, my experience thus far on this is consistent with the Lai family oral tradition. I find the Lai family interactions with the Yang's and the Wu's not to mention a few other prominent lineage holders of internal martial arts, over two generations have resulted in an oral tradition that has yet to fail me.
Whether the Wu family practiced what the Yang family defines as "Fa Jin" is very much dependent on the definition and the practitioner. The Yang family (3rd generation) defines "Fa Jin" as exclusively to be the result of the overall internal machinations trained with the "Ha" breath. They consider "Heng" breath machinations to be that of the receiving, the Join & Neutralizing.
1st and 2nd generations of the Wu family specialized in operating within the inner machinations trained through the "Heng" breath. Strictly Wu family issuing power happens within this inner machination. So naturally, not "Fa Jin" as the 3rd generation Yang family, Yang Cheng Fu, defines it.
However, unlike much of Northern Wu, and many 3rd generation Wu stylists, GM Ma Yuehliang would neutralize and issue power simultaneously modulating the machinations trained with both the "Heng" and "Ha" breaths (among other mechanics, like the older Yang's did).
And when I say mechanics or machinations I'm referring to specific Chi circulation patterns and the resultant body mechanics!
Hope this helps! All the best and have a great weekend 🤗
